Resusc Plus

June 2024

Emergency Departement, Antwerp University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Antwerp, Belgium.

The European Trauma Course (ETC) exemplifies an innovative approach to multispecialty trauma education. This initiative was started as a collaborative effort among the European Society for Emergency Medicine, the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery, and the European Society of Anaesthesiology under the auspices of the European Resuscitation Council. With the robust support of these societies, the project has evolved into the independent European Trauma Course Organisation.

Reading is a key skill for university students. The Author Recognition Test (ART) and the Title Recognition Test (TRT) have both been used for decades to measure print exposure which correlates with reading and other linguistic skills. Given the available evidence for interindividual differences in reading skills, this study addresses three open issues.

Objectives: To highlight current evidence pertaining to the measurement methods and prevalence of high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HTPR) in patients with PAD, as well as to evaluate the relationship between HTPR and recurrent adverse cardiovascular and limb events in PAD patients.

Methods: A systematic review of English-language literature on HTPR in patients with PAD. An electronic literature search of PubMed and Medline was performed in May 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • Amoxicillin-resistant strains of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) are increasing in Vietnam, making it harder to treat infections with this antibiotic, which prompted the study to explore the extent of this resistance and its genetic causes.
  • The study involved 308 patients with dyspepsia, using various diagnostic tests, including E-tests to check for amoxicillin susceptibility, and real-time PCR to detect genetic mutations linked to resistance.
  • Results showed that 25.7% of H. pylori strains were primarily resistant to amoxicillin, and specific mutations in the pbp1A gene were significantly associated with this resistance, highlighting the genetic diversity among resistant and sensitive strains.

Identifying and delineating the type 2 diabetes population in the Netherlands using an all-payer claims database: characteristics, healthcare utilisation and expenditures.

BMJ Open

December 2021

Department of Health Services Research, CAPHRI Care and Public Health Research Institute, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to profile the Dutch type 2 diabetes population and analyze healthcare use and costs from 2016 to 2018, using an all-payer claims database.
  • - In 2018, approximately 900,522 individuals (6.5% of adults) were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, with heart disease as the most common comorbidity (12.1%), and a significant portion of patients receiving various forms of healthcare.
  • - Overall, €8173 million was spent on this population, with medical specialist care being the largest expense (38.1%), highlighting the importance of understanding healthcare utilization to inform policy and improve healthcare system sustainability.

A population-based study on associations of stool microbiota with atopic diseases in school-age children.

J Allergy Clin Immunol

August 2021

Division of Respiratory Medicine and Allergolog, Department of Pediatrics, Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Division of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics, Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background: Infants with less diverse gut microbiota seem to have higher risks of atopic diseases in early life, but any associations at school age are unclear.

Objectives: This study sought to examine the associations of diversity, relative abundance, and functional pathways of stool microbiota with atopic diseases in school-age children.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study within an existing population-based prospective cohort among 1440 children 10 years of age.

Aims: Short-term weight loss may lead to remission of type 2 diabetes but the effect of maintained weight loss on cardiovascular disease (CVD) is unknown. We quantified the associations between changes in weight 5 years following a diagnosis of diabetes, and incident CVD events and mortality up to 10 years after diagnosis.

Materials And Methods: Observational analysis of the ADDITION-Europe trial of 2730 adults with screen-detected type 2 diabetes from the UK, Denmark and the Netherlands.

The aim of this study was to investigate genetic structures and expression of gene in five clinical isolates recovered from two hospitals in southern Vietnam during 2012-2014. isolates were identified by automated microbiology systems and confirmed by PCR. All isolates were characterized as multidrug resistant by antimicrobial testing using the disk diffusion method.

Background: The introduction of bundled payment for maternity care, aimed at improving the quality of maternity care, may affect pregnant women's choice in providers of maternity care. This paper describes a Dutch study which examined pregnant women's preferences when choosing a maternity care provider. The study focused on factors that enhance the quality of maternity care versus (restricted) provider choice.

Background & Aims: We evaluated the efficacy and safety of upadacitinib, an oral selective Janus kinase 1 inhibitor, in a randomized trial of patients with Crohn's disease (CD).

Methods: We performed a double-blind, phase 2 trial in adults with moderate to severe CD and inadequate response or intolerance to immunosuppressants or tumor necrosis factor antagonists. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1:1:1:1:1) to groups given placebo; or 3 mg, 6 mg, 12 mg, or 24 mg upadacitinib twice daily; or 24 mg upadacitinib once daily and were evaluated by ileocolonoscopy at weeks 12 or 16 of the induction period.

Background: The aim of this study is to understand the determinants of adherence to wrap-around care (WAC) by professional care providers working in child and family services. WAC is a care coordination method targeting families with complex needs. The core components of WAC involve activating family members and the social network, integrating the care provider network, and assessing, planning and evaluating the care process.

Survival of syngeneic and allogeneic iPSC-derived neural precursors after spinal grafting in minipigs.

Sci Transl Med

May 2018

Neuroregeneration Laboratory, Department of Anesthesiology, University of California, San Diego (UCSD), La Jolla, CA 92037, USA.

The use of autologous (or syngeneic) cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) holds great promise for future clinical use in a wide range of diseases and injuries. It is expected that cell replacement therapies using autologous cells would forego the need for immunosuppression, otherwise required in allogeneic transplantations. However, recent studies have shown the unexpected immune rejection of undifferentiated autologous mouse iPSCs after transplantation.

Estimating of Residual Kidney Function by Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis in Hemodialysis Patients Without Urine Collection.

Kidney Blood Press Res

September 2018

Nephrology Division, Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, Zerifin, affiliated with the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Background/aims: Residual kidney function (RKF) is a pivotal predictor of better clinical outcomes in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. So far there has been no attempt to use bioimpedance analysis (BIA) measurements to calculate residual glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in dialysis population. We hypothesized that performing of multi-frequency BIA at the beginning and end of hemodialysis session can enable us to predict the measured residual GFR in MHD patients.
