Fasciola gigantica and hybrid Fasciola flukes, responsible for the disease fasciolosis, are found in Southeast Asian countries. In the present study, we performed molecular species identification of Fasciola flukes distributed in Terengganu, Malaysia using multiplex PCR for phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (pepck) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) for DNA polymerase delta (pold). Simultaneously, phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (nad1) was performed for the first time on Malaysian Fasciola flukes to infer the dispersal direction among neighboring countries.

Microplastics may be potential vectors for environmental contaminants such as heavy metals in the aquatic ecosystem due to their highly hydrophobic surfaces and fugacity property. To investigate the combined effects of microplastics with Pb, we exposed juvenile Chinese mitten crabs Eriocheir sinensis to different Pb concentrations (0, 5 and 50 μg/L) combined with microplastics (0 and 400 μg/L) for 21 days to determine the Pb bioaccumulation, oxidative stress, lipid anabolism, and histopathology of hepatopancreas. In general, the results showed that compared to single Pb exposure, the combination of MPs and Pb significantly increased the bioaccumulation of Pb, activities/content of antioxidant biomarkers and lipid metabolism enzymes, and liver injury parameters in crabs, indicating MPs are potential vector of heavy metals and co-exposure exerts more severe effects on crabs.

Root and foliar litter inputs are the primary sources of carbon and nutrients for soil fauna and microorganisms, yet we still lack a quantitative assessment to evaluate the effects of root and foliar litter on various groups of soil organisms across terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we compiled 978 paired observations from 68 experimental sites to assess the directions and magnitudes of adding and removing foliar and root litter on the soil faunal density and microbial biomass that was evaluated by phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) across forests and grasslands worldwide. We found that litter addition had only a marginal effect on soil faunal density but significantly increased the soil total microbial-, fungal- and bacterial-PLFAs by 13%, 14%, and 10%, respectively, across ecosystems, suggesting that the soil microbial community is more sensitive to carbon source addition than soil fauna, particularly in soils with low carbon to nitrogen ratios.

In this study, we chose a marine invertebrate, , as a model and identified that shrimp mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) was an LPS-induced plasma protein, which exerted its anti-inflammatory roles on shrimp hemocytes by suppressing ERK phosphorylation and Dorsal expression. In addition, we demonstrated that shrimp MANF could be associated with a receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase (RPTP) to mediate negative regulation of ERK activation and Dorsal expression.
