Key Clinical Message: The nasopharyngeal swab for COVID-19 is associated with low risks of severe complications, but it is important to consider the patient's medical history and anatomy of the nasal cavity to ensure safety and accuracy of the test. Orbital complications can occur up to 85% secondary to acute sinusitis, and prompt treatments are crucial, particularly in the pediatric group. A conservative approach is effective for subperiosteal abscess if certain criteria are met, and it is not an absolute indication for immediate surgical intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • Nickel-rich cathodes, despite having high energy density, typically struggle with stability and cycle life; this study addresses those issues by developing a new type of cathode material.
  • The researchers created a double concentration-gradient layered oxide (CG-NCMA) using a special reactor, resulting in a structure that enhances electrochemical performance and cyclability.
  • The performance improvements were attributed to a manganese-rich surface and the presence of aluminum, which contributed to structural integrity and minimized undesirable reactions, making CG-NCMA a promising option for practical lithium-ion battery applications.

Aptamer-based rapid diagnosis for point-of-care application.

Microfluid Nanofluidics

January 2023

Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology, University Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Lebuhraya Tun Razak, Gambang, 26300 Kunatan, Pahang Malaysia.

Aptasensors have attracted considerable interest and widespread application in point-of-care testing worldwide. One of the biggest challenges of a point-of-care (POC) is the reduction of treatment time compared to central facilities that diagnose and monitor the applications. Over the past decades, biosensors have been introduced that offer more reliable, cost-effective, and accurate detection methods.

In this study, magnesium (Mg)-based nanocomposites reinforced with silica (SiO) nanoparticles were developed using the powder metallurgy process, and their mechanical and corrosion behavior were assessed. Mg-alloy AZ31 served as the matrix material, and two different weight percentages of SiO nanoparticles were used as filler. According to the microstructural analysis, the composite generated a MgSi phase as a result of SiO dissociating during the sintering process.

SARS-CoV-2 is a disease that endangers both human life and the economy. There was an 11- month period of relative evolutionary standstill following the appearance of SARS-CoV-2 in late 2019. However, the emergence of clusters of mutations known as' variants of concern 'with variable viral properties such as transmissibility and antigenicity defined the evolution of SARS-CoV-2.

This paper presents the data description of the African buffalo optimization algorithm (ABO). ABO is a recently-designed optimization algorithm that is inspired by the migrant behaviour of African buffalos in the vast African landscape. Organizing their large herds that could be over a thousand buffalos using just two principal sounds, the /maaa/ and the /waaa/ calls present a good foundation for the development of an optimization algorithm.

This critical review for anaerobic degradation of complex organic compounds like butyrate using reactors has been enormously applied for biogas production. Biogas production rate has a great impact on: reactor granulation methanogenesis, nutrient content, shear velocity, organic loading and loss of nutrients taking place in the reactor continuously. Various technologies have been applied to closed anaerobic reactors to improve biogas production and treatment efficiency.

One of the most significant and difficult jobs in food sustainability, is to make use of waste in the vegetable and fruit processing sectors. The discarded fruits along with their waste materials, is anticipated to have potential use for further industrial purposes via extraction of functional ingredients, extraction of bioactive components, fermentation. As a result of its abundant availability, simplicity and safe handling, and biodegradability, pineapple waste is now the subject of extensive research.

All-solid-state batteries containing ceramic-polymer solid electrolytes are possible alternatives to lithium-metal batteries containing liquid electrolytes in terms of their safety, energy storage, and stability at elevated temperatures. In this study we prepared a garnet-type LiGaLaZrOF (LGLZOF) solid electrolyte modified with lithium Nafion (LiNf) and incorporated it into poly(vinylidene fluoride--hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) matrixes. We used a solution-casting method to obtain bilayer (Bi-HSE) and trilayer (Tri-HSE) hybrid solid electrolytes.

To reduce surface contamination and increase battery life, MoO nanoparticles were coated with a high-voltage (5 V) LiNiMnO cathode material by in-situ method during the high-temperature annealing process. To avoid charging by more than 5 V, we also developed a system based on anode-limited full-cell with a negative/positive electrode (N/P) ratio of 0.9.

Alphavirus non-structural proteins 1-4 (nsP1, nsP2, nsP3, and nsP4) are known to be crucial for alphavirus RNA replication and translation. To date, nsP3 has been demonstrated to mediate many virus-host protein-protein interactions in several fundamental alphavirus mechanisms, particularly during the early stages of replication. However, the molecular pathways and proteins networks underlying these mechanisms remain poorly described.

This paper presents a comparative performance analysis of some metaheuristics such as the African Buffalo Optimization algorithm (ABO), Improved Extremal Optimization (IEO), Model-Induced Max-Min Ant Colony Optimization (MIMM-ACO), Max-Min Ant System (MMAS), Cooperative Genetic Ant System (CGAS), and the heuristic, Randomized Insertion Algorithm (RAI) to solve the asymmetric Travelling Salesman Problem (ATSP). Quite unlike the symmetric Travelling Salesman Problem, there is a paucity of research studies on the asymmetric counterpart. This is quite disturbing because most real-life applications are actually asymmetric in nature.

Background: Menopause signifies the beginning of a non-reproductive phase from the reproductive period. Although it is considered a natural life transition, recent studies have indicated that a woman's menopausal experience may impact her quality of life. While studies have examined Malaysian women's knowledge and awareness of menopause, they have focused on the prevalence of menopausal symptoms and sociocultural aspects.

Background: The study aims to analyze the correlation between the maximal diameter (both axial and orthogonal) and volume changes in the true (TL) and false lumens (FL) after stent-grafting for Stanford type B aortic dissection.

Method: Computed tomography angiography was performed on 13 type B aortic dissection patients before and after procedure, and at 6 and 12 months follow-up. The lumens were divided into three regions: the stented area (Region 1), distal to the stent graft to the celiac artery (Region 2), and between the celiac artery and the iliac bifurcation (Region 3).

Purpose: Evidence for the complete nicotine cessation is inadequate among electronic cigarettes (ECs) single users (SUs, use only ECs), and dual users (DUs, use both ECs and conventional cigarettes (CCs). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the nicotine cessation among SUs and DUs who used ECs over one year.

Methods: We observed 70 SUs and 148 DUs for 52 weeks and tested their exhaled carbon monoxide and saliva cotinine to confirm their complete nicotine cessation status through cotinine in saliva.
