Coronary artery disease (CAD) is currently the leading cause of death globally, and the prevalence of this disease is growing more rapidly in the Asia-Pacific region than in Western countries. Although the use of metal coronary stents has rapidly increased thanks to the advancement of safety and efficacy of newer generation drug eluting stent (DES), patients are still negatively affected by some the inherent limitations of this type of treatment, such as stent thrombosis or restenosis, including neoatherosclerosis, and the obligatory use of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with unknown optimal duration. Drug-coated balloon (DCB) treatment is based on a leave-nothing-behind concept and therefore it is not limited by stent thrombosis and long-term DAPT; it directly delivers an anti-proliferative drug which is coated on a balloon after improving coronary blood flow.

Purpose: Management of Blount disease in adolescents and young adults is complex and associated with high risk of morbidities. Gradual correction with external fixator can minimize soft tissue injury and allow subsequent adjustment in degree of correction. This study investigates the surgical outcome and complication rate of gradual correction of neglected Blount disease through single-level extra-articular corticotomy.

Preoperative lymphocyte count in relation to sarcoma prognosis.

J Orthop Surg (Hong Kong)

April 2020

Orthopaedic Oncology Unit, Department of Orthopaedics (Noceral), University Malaya Medical Center, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Purpose: Inflammation plays a major role in tumour development, progression and metastasis. Multiple inflammatory markers such as absolute lymphocyte count, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio have been discovered as prognostic markers for various malignancies. We investigate preoperative lymphocyte count and other cell count ratios and their relation to survival and prognosis of sarcoma patients after surgery.

Rehabilitation aims to optimize functioning of persons experiencing functioning limitations. As such the comparative evaluation of rehabilitation interventions relies on the analysis of the differences between the change in patient functioning after a specific rehabilitation intervention versus the change following another intervention. A robust health information reference system that can facilitate the comparative evaluation of changes in functioning in rehabilitation studies and the standardized reporting of rehabilitation interventions is the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).

In pediatric low-grade gliomas not amenable to complete resection, various chemotherapy regimens are the mainstream of treatment. An excellent overall survival of these patients makes justification of the intensification of chemotherapy difficult and calls for the development of new strategies. Bevacizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody directed against Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), has been successfully used in combination with irinotecan in a number of adult and pediatric studies and reports.

Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 (encoded by TGFB1) is the prototypic member of the TGF-β family of 33 proteins that orchestrate embryogenesis, development and tissue homeostasis. Following its discovery , enormous interest and numerous controversies have emerged about the role of TGF-β in coordinating the balance of pro- and anti-oncogenic properties, pro- and anti-inflammatory effects , or pro- and anti-fibrinogenic characteristics . Here we describe three individuals from two pedigrees with biallelic loss-of-function mutations in the TGFB1 gene who presented with severe infantile inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and central nervous system (CNS) disease associated with epilepsy, brain atrophy and posterior leukoencephalopathy.
