Objective: Youth who have been exposed to potentially traumatic events are at risk of developing chronic and severe adjustment problems. However, some youth exposed to potentially traumatic events exhibit better-than-expected adaptation. Person-centered analyses, based on multiple criteria for adaptive behavior and adversity, are well-suited to empirically identifying different patterns of adaptation among high-risk youth.

Handgrip strength conditional tolerance regions suggest the need for personalized sarcopenia definition: an analysis of the American NHANES database.

Aging Clin Exp Res

Faculty of Sport, Portugal Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health (ITR), Research Center in Physical Activity, Health and Leisure, University of Porto (FADEUP), Rua Dr. Plácido Costa, 91, 4200-450, Porto, Portugal.

Background: Handgrip strength (HGS) is a well-established clinical biomarker that assesses functional capacity in older populations. In addition, HGS is a diagnostic tool that forecasts aging health conditions, such as sarcopenia.

Aims: This paper provides HGS statistical tolerance regions and presents the need to establish HGS reference values according to patients' characteristics.

Introduction: The time spent in different physical activity (PA) intensities is associated with sarcopenia risk for community-dwelling older women.

Aim: To evaluate the role of sitting time and physical activity (PA) level as predictors of sarcopenia odds.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study, physically independent older women (n = 67) performed the six-minute walk test to identify functional limitation (≤ 400 m).

Background: Nutritional status, health risk behaviors, eating habits, and other comorbidities (such as diabetes) may be associated with recommended amounts of physical activity (PA) and exercise (EX) in healthy older adults. However, these associations are still unclear for older hypertensive adults, who require greater care from health professionals. The purpose of this study was to associate the nutritional status, health risk behaviors, eating habits, and the presence of diabetes with recommended amounts of physical activity and exercise practice of older hypertensive adults.

The regular practice of physical activity helps in the prevention and control of several non-communicable diseases. However, evidence on the role of physical activity in mitigating worsening clinical outcomes in people with COVID-19 is still unclear. The aim of this study was to verify whether different levels of physical activity provide protection for clinical outcomes caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Introduction: Poly-victimization (PV) has a greater adverse impact on adolescents' lives than any single victimization type, even when repeatedly experienced. Adolescents who experience PV tend to present with an array of adjustment problems, and research has begun to identify mechanisms linking PV to adjustment problems. Both posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociation are linked to PV and adjustment problems; however, it is unclear how these variables play a role in the pathways from PV to adjustment problems.

Dissociation is a process that often occurs as a sequela of psychological trauma, and it is interrelated with psychological and behavioral problems. In the at-risk adolescent population, dissociation is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Having reliable measures to assess this phenomenon can help in identifying adolescents at-risk and improve treatment outcomes.

Sleep Quality and Quality of Life Among Older Adults During COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Curr Aging Sci

July 2022

Research Center in Physical Activity, Health and Leisure, Faculty of Sport, University of Porto (FADEUP), Portugal Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health (ITR), Rua Dr. Plácido Costa, Porto, Portugal.

Background: Although home confinement reduces the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections, it may negatively impact the psychological and physical health of older adults.

Objective: The present study attempted to describe the quality of life (QoL) of older adults before and during the COVID-19 outbreak, focusing on evaluating QoL, physical activity, sitting time, and sleep quality during home confinement.

Methods: The present study was conducted in 1,063 older adults (91 % females) enrolled in a Brazilian social program.

Background: To propose cut-off points for older adults' weakness for upper and lower limbs muscle strength normalized by body size with the ratio standard/muscle quality and allometric scaling.

Methods: Ninety-four community-dwelling older adults (69.1% women) were assessed for 49 body-size variables (anthropometry, body composition and body indexes), handgrip strength (HGS), one maximum repetition measurement for knee extensors (1RM), isokinetic knee extension peak torque at 60°/s (PT), and six-minute walk test (6MWT).

Associations Between Depressive Symptoms and Physical Activity Intensity in an Older Adult Population During COVID-19 Lockdown.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic led to the implementation of physical-social distancing measures-including self-isolation, home confinement, and quarantine around the world, with psychological consequences such as depression. Older adults are especially likely to develop depressive symptomatology. This study aims to investigate the association between physical activity intensities and sedentary behavior with depression levels among previously active older adults during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The factor structure of DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been extensively debated, with evidence supporting the recently proposed seven-factor hybrid model. However, few studies examining PTSD symptom structure have assessed the implications of these proposed models on diagnostic criteria and PTSD prevalence. In the present study, we examined seven alternative DSM-5 PTSD models within a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), using the Child PTSD Symptom Scale-Self-Report for DSM-5 (CPSS-5).

Physical exercise positively modulates DOX-induced hepatic oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and quality control signaling.

Doxorubicin (DOX), a widely used and efficient antineoplastic agent, is mainly limited by cardiotoxicity, although other tissues including liver are also affected. The effects of exercise to cope with DOX side-effects has already been studied in the heart and brain, demonstrating successful results. However, the benefits of this non-pharmacological strategy have not been so extensively checked in the liver.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a widely used antineoplastic agent for a wide range of cancers, including hematological malignancies, soft tissue sarcomas and solid tumors. However, DOX exhibits a dose-related toxicity that results in life-threatening cardiomyopathy. In addition to the heart, there is evidence that DOX toxicity extends to other organs.

This study aimed to analyse the quality of difficulty judging in rhythmic gymnastics, at different levels of performance. The sample consisted of 1152 difficulty scores concerning 288 individual routines, performed in the World Championships in 2013. The data were analysed using the mean absolute judge deviation from the final difficulty score, a Cronbach's alpha coefficient and intra-class correlations, for consistency and reliability assessment.

Cortisol awakening response among women exposed to intimate partner violence.

Psychoneuroendocrinology

December 2016

Faculty of Psychology, Education and Sports, University Lusófona of Porto, Rua Augusto Rosa, n° 24, Porto 4000-098, Portugal.

The studies of the effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) on the cortisol awakening response (CAR) are scarce and contradictory. While some of the studies suggested that female victims of IPV showed high CAR, other studies found low CAR. Mixed results may be related to differences in sample characteristics as well as other potential covariates associated with the cortisol, as femalés history of abuse, chronicity, severity and type of IPV, psychological distress, posttraumatic stress disorder, and social support.
