Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the differences in intraoperative nociception, incision size and operative time between midline (OVE) and flank ovariectomy (OVE) in feral or stray cats.

Methods: Two groups of animals, the OVE group (n = 19) and the OVE group (n = 19), were evaluated at six intraoperative time points. Cats assigned to both groups were premedicated with dexmedetomidine (20 μg/kg IM) and methadone (0.

Article Synopsis
  • The Alentejano pig is a special type of pig from Portugal that can have skin problems called melanocytic lesions.
  • In a study, scientists examined 34 skin samples from these pigs and found that all of them were harmless (benign).
  • They noticed that older pigs were more likely to have certain types of these skin issues, but there were no harmful (malignant) lesions found, so more research is needed to tell the difference between harmless and harmful lesions for meat safety.

3D-printed aerogels as theranostic implants monitored by fluorescence bioimaging.

Bioact Mater

November 2024

AerogelsLab, I+D Farma Group (GI-1645), Department of Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Pharmacy, iMATUS and Health Research Institute of Santiago de Compostela (IDIS), Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, E-15782, Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Aerogel scaffolds are nanostructured materials with beneficial properties for tissue engineering applications. The tracing of the state of the aerogels after their implantation is challenging due to their variable biodegradation rate and the lack of suitable strategies capable of monitoring the scaffolds. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have emerged as advanced tools for bioimaging because of their fluorescence properties.

Naming hypoglycemia: a narrative tool for young people with type 1 diabetes and their families.

Diabetol Int

July 2024

Diabetology Department, APDP-Diabetes Portugal, Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca, 1, 1250-189 Lisbon, Portugal.

Objective: Hypoglycemia constitutes a communication barrier between youth with type 1 diabetes, their family members and health professionals. A narrative tool may contribute to a more effective communication.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews with six open-ended questions using narrative techniques collect and analyze (thematic and comparative analysis) different ways of "naming" the lived experience of hypoglycemia.

Characterization of expression patterns and dynamic relocation of Notch proteins during acrosome reaction of bull spermatozoa.

Sci Rep

June 2024

Reproduction & Development Lab, CIISA - Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal.

Notch is a conserved cell-signaling pathway involved in spermatogenesis regulation. This study firstly evaluated the presence, localization patterns, acquisition origin and relation to acrosome reaction of Notch proteins in bull sperm. Western Blot analysis detected all Notch proteins in ejaculated bull sperm, and immunostaining described their specific sperm localization.

The ovariectomy (OVE) procedure can trigger somatosensory and visceral peritoneal nociception. Sacrococcygeal epidural (ScE) anesthesia may complement or replace systemic analgesia used for feline OVE, reducing opioid consumption and their related undesirable adverse effects and consequently reducing or completely blocking the sympathetic nervous system activation during this procedure. The present study aimed to evaluate the activation of the sympathetic nervous system resulting from adding an ScE injection of bupivacaine 0.

Repetition of thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology after an initial nondiagnostic result: Is there an optimal timing?

Endocrinol Diabetes Nutr (Engl Ed)

May 2024

Endocrinology Department, Northern Lisbon University Center, Lisbon, Portugal; Endocrinology University Clinic, Lisbon Medical School, Lisbon, Portugal.

Introduction: It is suggested to wait at least 3 months to repeat a fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) to avoid possible inflammatory cytological changes induced by a previous procedure. This study evaluated the influence of the interval between 2 FNACs in a cohort with a previous non-diagnostic (ND) FNAC. We analysed the occurrence of ND or atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance (AUS/FLUS) results in the second FNAC, based on the intervals between procedures.

Background: The monitoring of nociception/antinociception poses a significant challenge during anesthesia, making the incorporation of new tools like the Parasympathetic Tone Activity (PTA) monitor an added value in feline anesthesia.

Objectives: To compare the effectiveness and speed of PTA monitoring when compared to heart rate (HR) in detecting surgical stimuli (SS) during the intraoperative period in 49 female cats undergoing ovariectomy (OV).

Methods: Instantaneous Parasympathetic Tone Activity (PTAi) values, HR, , and non-invasive SAP and MAP were continuously monitored and systematically assessed.

Introduction: Several osteotomies of the first metatarsal have been described for treatment of hallux valgus but chevron osteotomy is one of the most common and well-established procedure for treating this deformity. Although there is a trend towards considering bilateral surgery there is lack of publications addressing bilateral treatment in ambulatory units. The aim of this study is to analyze results of bilateral and unilateral distal chevron osteotomies associated with lateral soft tissue release as ambulatory procedures.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the results of patients operated with trapeziectomy and ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (LRTI) using flexor carpi radialis tendon versus trapeziectomy followed by suspension of the first metacarpal to the second metacarpal using a Mini TightRope® suture button (suture button suspension: SBS). A single-center prospective randomized controlled trial was performed, comparing 37 patients with SBS and 39 with LRTI. All surgeries were performed by the same fellowship-trained hand surgeon.

Introduction: The majority of patients with ankle injuries undergo radiological examinations of the foot, ankle or both. The objective of this study was in the first place to validate the Ottawa Ankle Rules (OARs) for the population of our centre. Secondly, an attempt was made to identify parameters that contribute to improve the specificity of the method, with a view to reduce the need for patients to be exposed to radiation as well as optimizing the expenses of the Emergency Ward (EW).

Genital tuberculosis role in female infertility in Portugal.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

September 2021

Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine, Santa Maria Hospital, North Lisbon University Center, Lisbon, Portugal.

Introduction: Genitourinary tuberculosis is the fourth most common cause of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, although often underestimated by clinicians due to its rare and non-specific symptoms. One of the disease's complications is infertility. Although Portugal is one of the European countries with the highest prevalence of tuberculosis, its impact on Portuguese female fertility is unknown.
