Currently, few porous vanadium metal-organic frameworks (V-MOFs) are known and even fewer are obtainable as single crystals, resulting in limited information on their structures and properties. Here this work demonstrates remarkable promise of V-MOFs by presenting an extensible family of V-MOFs with tailorable pore geometry and properties. The synthesis leverages inter-modular synergy on a tri-modular pore-partitioned platform.

We use latent class analysis, a life course framework, and information on the type, frequency, and timing of trauma exposure to identify distinct polytrauma groups in a national sample of women (AddHealth). We compare the identified polytrauma groups and their associations with mental health in adulthood in women with and without incarceration histories. A unique group with polyvictimization (neglect, physical, sexual) exposure in childhood by a caregiver in women with incarceration histories was not identified in women without incarceration histories.

By adolescence, two-thirds of youth report exposure to at least one traumatic event, yet the impact of trauma history is not routinely considered when evaluating the effect of psychotherapeutic interventions. Trauma may be a particularly important moderator of the effects of transdiagnostic therapies for emotional disorders, as trauma exposure is associated with risk for the development of comorbid depression and anxiety. The current study examined the history of trauma exposure and the presence of clinically significant depression as moderators of treatment outcomes in the Brief Behavioral Therapy (BBT) trial, the largest study of transdiagnostic psychotherapy for youth.

Food insecurity among college students has become a growing concern, with reports documenting its prevalence for over a decade. As the demographics of university and college students change, with more first-generation, nontraditional, and minority students, the risk of food insecurity is heightened. This viewpoint contends that food security is an essential basic need among college students, and when left unmet, it significantly impacts their well-being, resulting in an increased risk of poor academic performance or departure from higher education before degree completion.

Many proteins in higher eukaryotes, especially those with crucial functions, have multiple isoforms with redundant roles providing protection against potential functional deficiencies in one isoform. However, these isoforms can also have some unique roles. Protein kinase B, also known as Akt, is one such protein that has three isoforms encoded on different genes.

The crystal nucleation and growth mechanism of monodispersed metal-organic framework nanoparticles were studied using time-resolved light dynamic, electrokinetic, and powder X-ray diffraction methods. We confirmed that zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocrystals follow a nonclassical crystal growth pathway, where a fast nucleation occurs with dense liquid clusters or nanocrystals forming spontaneously when two precursors are mixed. We also explored the zeta potential and solvodynamic size changes of ZIF-8 prepared by a surfactant-assisted synthesis.

Services for Latino Family Dementia Caregivers: Is the Workforce Prepared?

J Appl Gerontol

September 2024

Department of Health Sciences, College of Health and Human Services, California State University Long Beach, Long Beach, CA, USA.

The American healthcare system is ill-fitted to meet the needs of the growing population with Alzheimer's and Related Dementias (ADRD) and their caregivers, which disproportionately affects Latinos. This paper describes the caregiving process for Latino patients with ADRD from the perspective of caregivers and service providers to reveal service areas in need of improvement. Ten providers and 24 Latino caregivers were interviewed through the Miami-Dade County Aging Network.

The Effects of Previous Experiences of Healthcare Discrimination on HIV Intervention Outcomes.

AIDS Behav

May 2024

Center for Health Equity Research, California State University Long Beach, 1250 Bellflower Blvd., FO5 Rm. 120, Long Beach, CA, 90840, USA.

Although several healthcare interventions have been developed to address HIV among young Black/African American men who have sex with men (YBMSM), the HIV epidemic in the United States continues to disproportionately burden this population. The current study examines previous healthcare discrimination and how it affects HIV intervention delivery. One hundred seventy-two YBMSM participated in the Peer Promotion of Wellness and Enhanced Linkage to Resources (PPOWER) project, which used a short, multi-faceted, community-level intervention based on Community Peers Reaching Out and Modeling Intervention Strategies (Community PROMISE).

Article Synopsis
  • Technetium poses challenges in radioactive waste management due to its mobility and behavior during fuel reprocessing, often appearing as the pertechnetate anion (TcO).
  • A new method involves using diaminoguanidine (DAG) to manage TcO and control redox processes, but its stability under radiation during reprocessing is still uncertain.
  • Research shows that DAG degrades rapidly when exposed to gamma irradiation, particularly in acidic solutions, and reacts significantly with reactive species like hydroxyl radicals and nitrous acid, suggesting that its oxidation is the main degradation pathway in radiative environments.

Despite the availability of transuranic elements increasing in recent years, our understanding of their most basic and inherent radiation chemistry is limited and yet essential for the accurate interpretation of their physical and chemical properties. Here, we explore the transient interactions between trivalent californium ions () and select inorganic radicals arising from the radiolytic decomposition of common anions and functional group constituents, specifically the dichlorine (Cl) and sulfate (SO) radical anions. Chemical kinetics, as measured using integrated electron pulse radiolysis and transient absorption spectroscopy techniques, are presented for the reactions of these two oxidizing radicals with ions.

In-Hospital Formula Feeding Hindered Exclusive Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy as a Mediating Factor.

Nutrients

December 2023

Stanford Center on China's Economy and Institutions, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305, USA.

Breastfeeding self-efficacy (BSE), defined as a mother's confidence in her ability to breastfeed, has been confirmed to predict the uptake of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). Early experiences during the birth hospital stay, especially in-hospital formula feeding (IHFF), can impact both EBF and maternal breastfeeding confidence. Therefore, our objective was to examine the association between IHFF and EBF outcomes and investigate whether this association is influenced by BSE.
