Apolipophorin III (apoLp-III) from is an exchangeable apolipoprotein with a critical role in lipid transport in insects. The protein is composed of a bundle of five amphipathic α-helices which undergo a large conformational change upon lipid binding. To better understand the apoLp-III lipid binding interaction, the protein was cleaved by cyanogen bromide upon introduction of a S92M mutation, generating an N-terminal fragment corresponding to the first three helices (NT) and a C-terminal fragment of the last two helices (CT).

Using a mixed-methods design, the present study examined intimate partner surveillance among a diverse sample of intimate partner abuse (IPA) survivors ( = 246), including women of Mexican ( = 83), Korean ( = 50), Vietnamese ( = 49), and European descent ( = 64). Most survivors (57%) described surveillance in either survey or interview; inductive thematic analysis revealed seven forms of surveillance. Finally, two-step cluster analysis identified two patterns of victimization most clearly differentiated by surveillance, but ethnic group differences in rates and patterns of abuse did not emerge.

Family-based nutrition programs have been used to support healthy eating; however, few programs emphasize parental roles in regard to food. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a family-based curriculum with a parenting focus aimed at influencing child obesity risk. Qualitative data in the pilot implementation (cohort 1, n = 6 families with elementary-aged children) suggested parent value for: positive messages, hands-on learning, and group sharing.

We developed and pilot-tested an eight-session community-based cognitive behavior therapy group intervention to improve coping with intersectional stigma, address medical mistrust, and improve antiretroviral treatment adherence. Seventy-six HIV-positive Latinx sexual minority men (SMM; 38 intervention, 38 wait-list control) completed surveys at baseline, and 4- and 7-months post-baseline. Adherence was electronically monitored.

In plants, the vegetative to reproductive phase transition (termed bolting in Arabidopsis) generally precedes age-dependent leaf senescence (LS). Many studies describe a temporal link between bolting time and LS, as plants that bolt early, senesce early, and plants that bolt late, senesce late. The molecular mechanisms underlying this relationship are unknown and are potentially agriculturally important, as they may allow for the development of crops that can overcome early LS caused by stress-related early-phase transition.

The implementation and monitoring of management strategies is integral to protect coastal marshes from increased inundation and submergence under sea-level rise. Sediment addition is one such strategy in which sediment is added to marshes to raise relative elevations, decrease tidal inundation, and enhance ecosystem processes. This study looked at the plant and invertebrate community responses over 12 months following a sediment addition project on a salt marsh located in an urbanized estuary in southern California, USA.

Electronic health records (EHRs) often suffer missing values, for which recent advances in deep learning offer a promising remedy. We develop a deep learning-based, unsupervised method to impute missing values in patient records, then examine its imputation effectiveness and predictive efficacy for peritonitis patient management. Our method builds on a deep autoencoder framework, incorporates missing patterns, accounts for essential relationships in patient data, considers temporal patterns common to patient records, and employs a novel loss function for error calculation and regularization.

The giant sea bass Stereolepis gigas Ayres 1859 (GSB) is a critically endangered top marine predator in California. Since protection in 1982 and 1994, the population has appeared to increase, and individuals within a growing population may expand their ranges to new habitats to reduce intraspecific competition and increase foraging opportunities. In 2016-2018, two GSB tagged with acoustic transmitters were detected at artificial reefs for periods of up to 3 months during October-March, and one individual travelled 53 km from an offshore island to mainland California in 56 h.

Kernel-based nonparametric hazard rate estimation is considered with a special class of infinite-order kernels that achieves favorable bias and mean square error properties. A fully automatic and adaptive implementation of a density and hazard rate estimator is proposed for randomly right censored data. Careful selection of the bandwidth in the proposed estimators yields estimates that are more efficient in terms of overall mean squared error performance, and in some cases achieves a nearly parametric convergence rate.
