We evaluated the feasibility of using the kinetic of diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) and the normalized apparent coefficient diffusion (ADC) map value as an early biomarker in patients treated by external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). Twelve patients were included within the frame of a multicenter phase II trial and treated for intermediate risk prostate cancer (PCa). Multiparametric MRI was performed before treatment (M0) and every 6 months until M24.

In the present paper, a framework of probabilistic risk assessment and improvement decision based on Bayesian belief networks (PRAID-BBN) is proposed. Reported herein the binding affinity between Human Serum Albumin and the DNA binding and cleavage activity of three copper(II) complexes, [Cu(phen)(o-van)ClO] (1), [Cu(phen)(gly)]ClO (2) and [Cu(L)(HO)] (3) wherein 1 and 2 are synthesized with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and co-ligands (o-van: o-vanillin; gly: glycine) and 3 with a ligand 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-amine (HL). Complex 2 crystallizes in monoclinic (P21/n) space group shows square pyramidal geometry. The complex 3 crystallizes in monoclinic (P21/a) space group.

This work aimed to rely expression of the fengycin promoter to fengycin production under different culture conditions. To this end, Bacillus subtilis BBG208, derived from BBG21, which is a fengycin overproducing strain carrying the green fluorescent protein (GFP) under the control of fengycin promoter, was used to assess the effects of different carbon and nitrogen sources on surfactin and fengycin production and the fengycin promoter expression. The data showed that some carbon sources oriented synthesis of one family of lipopeptides, while most of the nitrogen sources allowed high co-production of fengycin and surfactin.

Purpose: The aim of the present work is to evaluate a semi-automatic prescription and validation system of treatment plans for complex delivery techniques, integrated in a Monte Carlo platform, and to investigate the clinical impact of dose differences due to the calculation algorithms, by assessing the changes in DVH constraints.
Methods: A new prescription module was implemented into the Moderato system, an in-house Monte Carlo platform, with corresponding dose constraints generated depending on the anatomical region and fractionation scheme considered. The platform was tested on 83 cases treated with Cyberknife and Tomotherapy machines, to assess whether dose variations between the re-calculated dose and the Treatment Planning System might impact the dose constraints on the sensitive structures.

Surface remote sensing of aerosol properties provides "ground truth" for satellite and model validation, and is an important component of aerosol observation system. Due to the different characteristics of background aerosol variability, information obtained at different locations usually have different spatial representativeness, implying that the location should be carefully chosen so that its measurement could be extended to a greater area. In this study, we present an objective observation array design technique that automatically determines the optimal locations with the highest spatial representativeness based on the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) theory.

Background: The antioxidant and antibacterial activities of fermented sarshir (traditional dairy food), with three probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum strains (LP3, AF1, and LU5), were investigated. The oxidative stability and the lipid profile of non-fermented and fermented sarshir were compared, in addition to radical scavenging activity, as well as peroxide, anisidine and carbonyl values (PV, AnV and CV, respectively).
Results: The strong antibacterial activity of fermented sarshir against common pathogenic bacteria, including Gram-negative Escherichia coli O157: H7 ATCC 35150 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, as well as Gram-positive Bacillus cereus ATCC 10876 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, was established.

This work focuses on the relevance of antibacterial nanofibers based on a polyelectrolyte complex formed between positively charged chitosan (CHT) and an anionic hydroxypropyl betacyclodextrin (CD)-citric acid polymer (PCD) complexing triclosan (TCL). The study of PCD/TCL inclusion complex and its release in dynamic conditions, a cytocompatibility study, and finally the antibacterial activity assessment were studied. Purpose: The main focus of the current paper is the clinical implementation of a Monte Carlo based platform for treatment plan validation for Tomotherapy and Cyberknife, without adding additional tasks to the dosimetry department.
Methods: The Monte Carlo platform consists of C++ classes for the actual functionality and a web based GUI that allows accessing the system using a web browser. Calculations are based on BEAMnrc/DOSXYZnrc and/or GATE and are performed automatically after exporting the dicom data from the treatment planning system.

In this paper, a method for evaluating the in-situ degradation of nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAH) in sediments is presented. The methodology is adapted from the passive sampler technique, which commonly uses the dissipation rate of labeled compounds loaded in passive sampler devices to sense the environmental conditions of exposure. In the present study, polymeric passive samplers (made of polyethylene strips) loaded with a set of labeled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and nitro-PAH were immersed in sediments (in field and laboratory conditions) to track the degradation processes.

The resuspension of polluted sediments by boat traffic could release substantial amounts of metals to the water column, affecting at the same time their bioavailability. In order to characterize the impact of sediment resuspensions on biota, caged amphipods have been deployed on three different channelized watercourses in Northern France. Firstly, the biological responses of transplanted freshwater gammarid amphipods, Gammarus fossarum, described by trace metal accumulation, feeding and reproduction activities were quite similar for the three water courses despite the differences of metal contamination and navigability.

The biogeochemical behaviors of small rivers that pass through suburban areas are difficult to understand because of the multi-origin inputs that can modify their behavior. In this context, a monitoring strategy has been designed for the Marque River, located in Lille Metropolitan area of northern France, that includes both low-frequency monitoring over a one-year period (monthly sampling) and high frequency monitoring (measurements every 10 minutes) in spring and summer. Several environmental and chemical parameters are evaluated including rainfall events, river flow, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, nutritive salts and dissolved organic matter.

Inkjet-printing technology was used to apply biodegradable and biocompatible polymeric coatings of poly(d,l-lactide) with the antiproliferative drugs simvastatin (SMV) and paclitaxel (PCX) on coronary metal stents. A piezoelectric dispenser applied coating patterns of very fine droplets (300 pL) and inkjet printing was optimized to develop uniform, accurate and reproducible coatings of high yields on the stent strut. The drug loaded polymeric coatings were assed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transition thermal microscopy (TTM) where a phase separation was observed for SMV/PLA layers while PCX showed a uniform distribution within the polymer layers.

A new laboratory-made Zn-ferrite (ZnFe2O4) binding gel is fully tested using Diffusive Gradient in Thin films (DGT) probes to measure total As [including inorganic As(III) and As(V), as well as MonoMethyl Arsenic Acid (MMAA(V)) and DiMethyl Arsenic Acid (DMAA(V))] in river waters and sediment pore waters. The synthesis of the binding gel is easy, cheap and its insertion into the acrylamide gel is not problematic. An important series of triplicate tests have been carried out to validate the use of the Zn-ferrite binding gel in routine for several environmental matrixes studies, in order to test: (i) the effect of pH on the accumulation efficiency of inorganic As species; (ii) the reproducibility of the results; (iii) the accumulation efficiency of As species; (iv) the effects of the ionic strength and possible competitive anions; and (v) the uptake and the elution efficiency of As species after accumulation in the binding gel.

There is accumulating evidence that TrkA and its ligand Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) are involved in cancer development. Staurosporine derivatives such as K252a and lestaurtinib have been developed to block TrkA kinase signaling, but no clinical trial has fully demonstrated their therapeutic efficacy.
