Hypoxia leads to changes in tumor microenvironment (upregulated CAFs) with resultant aggressiveness. A key factor in the physiological response to hypoxia is hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1α). [Ga]Ga-FAPI PET imaging has been demonstrated in various cancer types.

Depending on the diagnostic modality, the classification of vascular anomalies varies and so does the nomenclature. The 'International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies' (ISSVA) is the most widely accepted classification in the literature and is mainly based on the radiologic and clinical presentation. The aim of this article is to review the clinical practice of diagnosis and treatment of vascular anomalies in the head and neck region in a university hospital, with special focus on the nomenclature.

Following the new ESPEN Standard Operating Procedures, the previous 2019 guideline to provide best medical nutritional therapy to critically ill patients has been shortened and partially revised. Following this update, we propose this publication as a practical guideline based on the published scientific guideline, but shortened and illustrated by flow charts. The main goal of this practical guideline is to increase understanding and allow the practitioner to implement the Nutrition in the ICU guidelines.

Background: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) has been linked to functional brain changes and inflammatory processes. Hence, interventions targeting these underlying mechanisms are needed. In this study, we investigated the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention on brain function and inflammatory profiles in breast cancer survivors with CRCI.

Segmental rectum resections for indications other than endometriosis were reported to result in up to 40% sexual dysfunctions. We, therefore, evaluated sexual function after low bowel resection ( = 33) for deep endometriosis in comparison with conservative excision ( = 23). Sexual function was evaluated with the FSFI-19 (Female Sexuality Functioning Index) and EHP 30 (Endometriosis Health Profile).

This can be challenging in patients with obligate fluid intake for nutrition or medication. Pharmaceutical treatment with tolvaptan and urea is available but minimal paediatric data are available.

In Europe alone, on a yearly basis, millions of people need an appropriate exercise prescription to prevent the occurrence or progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). A general exercise recommendation can be provided to these individuals (at least 150 min of moderate-intensity endurance exercise, spread over 3-5 days/week, complemented by dynamic moderate-intensity resistance exercise 2 days/week). However, recent evidence shows that this one size does not fit all and that individual adjustments should be made according to the patient's underlying disease(s), risk profile, and individual needs, to maximize the clinical benefits of exercise.

Background: For patients with a maxillary transversal deficiency (MTD), various treatment options are available, partly based on the practitioner's experience. This study aimed to determine a cut-off age for decision making between surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) over orthodontic rapid palatal expansion (ORPE) based on skeletal maturation in a female population.
Methods: A total of 100 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of young females were analyzed on maturation of the pterygomaxillary (PMS), zygomaticomaxillary (ZMS), transpalatal (TPS), and midpalatal (MPS) sutures.

The number of adult patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is steadily increasing and exceeds nowadays the number of children with CHD. This is due to significant advances in therapeutic possibilities that became available over the last four decades. As such, this aging population survives the CHD complications and is exposed to the traditional cardiovascular risk factors for atherosclerotic disease such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, long-standing exposure to smoking, overweight and obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.

How much data are needed to obtain useful parameter estimations from a computational model? The standard approach to address this question is to carry out a goodness-of-recovery study. Here, the correlation between individual-participant true and estimated parameter values determines when a sample size is large enough. However, depending on one's research question, this approach may be suboptimal, potentially leading to sample sizes that are either too small (underpowered) or too large (overcostly or unfeasible).

Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is a valuable tool in the assessment of orofacial somatosensory function and dysfunction. QST is a method where thermal and mechanical stimuli are applied to the area of interest in a noninvasive way. The QST technique can detect patterns of loss of sensation that may happen in case of hypoesthesia, hypoalgesia, anesthesia, or gain of sensation in the context of allodynia, hyperalgesia or spontaneous pain.

Objectives: Dentists and oral surgeons often face difficulties distinguishing between radicular cysts and periapical granulomas on panoramic imaging. Radicular cysts require surgical removal while root canal treatment is the first-line treatment for periapical granulomas. Therefore, an automated tool to aid clinical decision making is needed.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable neurodegenerative condition. Despite significant advances in pre-clinical models that enhance understanding of disease pathobiology, translation of candidate drugs to effective human therapies has been disappointing. There is increasing recognition of the need for a precision medicine approach toward drug development, as many failures in translation can be attributed in part to disease heterogeneity in humans.

In metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC), disease volume plays an integral role in guiding treatment recommendations, including selection of docetaxel therapy, metastasis-directed therapy, and radiation to the prostate. Although there are multiple definitions of disease volume, they have commonly been studied in the context of metastases detected via conventional imaging (CIM). One such numeric definition of disease volume, termed oligometastasis, is heavily dependent on the sensitivity of the imaging modality.

Background: Metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC) is commonly classified into high- and low-volume subgroups which have demonstrated differential biology, prognosis, and response to therapy. Timing of metastasis has similarly demonstrated differences in clinical outcomes; however, less is known about any underlying biologic differences between these disease states. Herein, we aim to compare transcriptomic differences between synchronous and metachronous mCSPC and identify any differential responses to therapy.

Obesity and sarcopenia are associated with cognitive impairments at older age. Current research suggests that blood biomarkers may mediate this body-brain crosstalk, altering neurometabolism and brain structure eventually resulting in cognitive performance changes. Seventy-four older adults (60-85 years old) underwent bio-impedance body composition analysis, handgrip strength measurements, 8-Foot Up-and-Go (8UG) test, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), blood analysis of interleukin-6 (IL-6), kynurenine, and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), as well as brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS), estimating neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation.

The 8th Cardiovascular Outcome Trial (CVOT) Summit on Cardiovascular, Kidney, and Glycemic Outcomes was held virtually on November 10-12, 2022. Following the tradition of previous summits, this reference congress served as a platform for in-depth discussion and exchange on recently completed outcomes trials as well as key trials important to the cardiovascular (CV) field. This year's focus was on the results of the DELIVER, EMPA-KIDNEY and SURMOUNT-1 trials and their implications for the treatment of heart failure (HF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and obesity with glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists.
