Background And Objective: Overweight and obesity affects millions of individuals worldwide and consequently represents a major public health concern. Individuals living with overweight and obesity have difficulty maintaining a low body weight due to known physiological mechanisms which prevent further weight loss and drive weight regain. In contrast, mechanisms which promote low body weight maintenance receive less attention and are largely unknown.

Much work has investigated beneficial effects of mindfulness-based meditation methods, but less work has investigated potential risks and differences across meditation methods. We addressed this in a large pre-registered online survey including 613 mediators where we correlated participants' experience with fifty meditation techniques to psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) and mystical experiences. We found a positive correlation for both PLEs and mystical experiences with techniques aiming at reducing phenomenological content ('null-directed', NDM) or classified as non-dual or less embodied.

Department of Cardiology and Sports Medicine, Normandie Univ, UFR Santé, UNICAEN, CHU de Caen Normandie, INSERM Comete, GIP Cyceron, 14000 Caen, France.

Article Synopsis
  • * Eighteen untrained male participants took part in a structured training program, measuring the strength of various muscle groups over time through isokinetic tests, showing significant increases in maximal theoretical force for most muscle groups (except elbow flexors).
  • * The results indicated that the training shifted the force-velocity profile of knee muscles towards a more force-oriented state, enhancing their strength as reflected in improved 1-RM performance, leading to recommendations for longer studies with control groups in the future.

In this comparative cross-linguistic study we test whether expressive interjections (words like ouch or yay) share similar vowel signatures across the world's languages, and whether these can be traced back to nonlinguistic vocalizations (like screams and cries) expressing the same emotions of pain, disgust, and joy. We analyze vowels in interjections from dictionaries of 131 languages (over 600 tokens) and compare these with nearly 500 vowels based on formant frequency measures from voice recordings of volitional nonlinguistic vocalizations. We show that across the globe, pain interjections feature a-like vowels and wide falling diphthongs ("ai" as in Ayyy! "aw" as in Ouch!), whereas disgust and joy interjections do not show robust vowel regularities that extend geographically.

There are millions of river barriers worldwide, ranging from wooden locks to concrete dams, many of which form associated impoundments to store water in small ponds or large reservoirs. Besides their benefits, there is growing recognition of important environmental and social trade-offs related to these artificial structures. However, global datasets describing their characteristics and geographical distribution are often biased towards particular regions or specific applications, such as hydropower dams affecting fish migration, and are thus not globally consistent.

Superficial vein thrombosis (SVT), a manifestation of venous thromboembolism (VTE), is a common condition, yet of all the types of VTE, it has been the least well studied. Recent studies have challenged the conception that SVT is a benign disease, showing that its risk factors overlap with those of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and that it is frequently associated with DVT or pulmonary embolism (PE). In 2010, the CALISTO trial demonstrated the benefit of treatment with fondaparinux at the dose of 2.
