Article Synopsis
  • Disease and treatment-related immunodeficiencies can reduce the effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in patients with hematologic diseases, as demonstrated in a study of 118 individuals.
  • After the first vaccine dose, only 33% of patients showed positive antibody responses, but this increased to 64.4% and a higher antibody titer after the second dose.
  • Seropositivity rates varied significantly among different hematologic conditions, with lower rates observed in lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, emphasizing the need for tailored vaccination strategies for patients based on their specific diagnoses.

School of medicine Zagreb, University of Zagreb, School of medicine, University J.J. Strossmayer, Osijek, and Department of nephrology, arterial hypertension, dialysis and transplantation, University Hospital Centre Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia.

Inflammatory bowel diseases are autoimmune disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract and producing a wide variety of extraintestinal manifestations. Kidneys are a rare target organ of their extraintestinal activity, but if affected, renal function could deteriorate to end-stage kidney disease, which is curable only by organ transplantation. Renal calculi are the most common pathological kidney manifestation in IBD patients, followed by tubulointerstitial nephritis, glomerulonephritis, and other kidney pathologies.

March 2022

UOC Neurologia, Salute Pubblica, Disabilità, Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico Carlo Besta, Milan, Italy.

Background: Vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are used to reduce the risk of developing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Despite the significant benefits in terms of reduced risk of hospitalization and death, different adverse events may present after vaccination: among them, headache is one of the most common, but nowadays there is no summary presentation of its incidence and no description of its main features.

Methods: We searched PubMed and EMBASE covering the period between January 1 2020 and August 6, 2021, looking for record in English and with an abstract and using three main search terms (with specific variations): COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2; Vaccination; headache/adverse events.

Introduction: Alemtuzumab is highly effective in the treatment of patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis (PwRMS) and selectively targets the CD52 antigen, with a consequent profound lymphopenia, particularly of CD4+ T lymphocytes. However, the immunological basis of its long-term efficacy has not been clearly elucidated.

Methods: We followed up 29 alemtuzumab-treated RMS patients over a period of 72 months and studied the immunological reconstitution of their CD4+ T cell subsets by means of phenotypic and functional analysis and through mRNA-related molecule expression, comparing them to healthy subject (HS) values (rate 2:1).

Pediatric Endoscopy Quality Improvement Network Quality Standards and Indicators for Pediatric Endoscopic Procedures: A Joint NASPGHAN/ESPGHAN Guideline.

J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr

March 2022

Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Introduction: High-quality pediatric gastrointestinal procedures are performed when clinically indicated and defined by their successful performance by skilled providers in a safe, comfortable, child-oriented, and expeditious manner. The process of pediatric endoscopy begins when a plan to perform the procedure is first made and ends when all appropriate patient follow-up has occurred. Procedure-related standards and indicators developed to date for endoscopy in adults emphasize cancer screening and are thus unsuitable for pediatric medicine.
