Background/objectives: Celiac disease (CD) is a common immune-mediated, chronic systemic disorder that is treated with a strict, life-long gluten-free diet (GFD). In addition to gastrointestinal manifestations, CD also presents with a variety of extraintestinal symptoms, including significant neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Among these neurological manifestations, motor dysfunctions are particularly notable.

Type 1 diabetes has become prevalent among the adult population, who have increasingly gained access to sensing technology. This study delved into the impact of diet, nutritional status, and the use of a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGM) on glycemic regulation among adults diagnosed with T1D. Employing a prospective design, data were gathered from 151 participants aged 18-60 across multiple cycles.

The use of omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3 FA) in the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) is an area of ongoing research. Some studies suggest that dietary supplementation with omega-3 FA can help manage symptoms of AD by reducing lesion severity, skin inflammation, dryness and itching, while others show no significant beneficial effect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of omega-3 FA from fish oil in combination with gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) from blackcurrant seed oil in children with AD.

Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction represents reversible myocardial dysfunction which ultimately results in left ventricular dilatation or both, with consequent loss of contractility. Studies on septic cardiomyopathy report a wide range of prevalence ranging from 10% to 70%.

Background: The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of an exercise program on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and sleep quality in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in remission.
Methods: A total of 42 pediatric IBD patients in remission were recruited to participate in a 6-month-long home-based exercise program. Their mean age was 15.

The most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) in children include infantile colic, constipation, functional abdominal pain (FAP), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Unfortunately, treatment options for FGID in children are limited, therefore many dietary interventions have been evaluated, including probiotics. This chapter summarizes currently available evidence and recommendations for probiotic use in the treatment of frequent FGIDs in children.

Background: Although parenteral nutrition (PN) significantly improves mortality rates in pediatric short bowel syndrome (SBS), long-term PN has many possible complications and impacts quality of life. Bowel lengthening procedures (BLPs) increase the contact surface of food and the intestinal mucosa and enable the better absorption of nutrients and liquids, possibly leading to a PN decrease.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of patients with short bowel syndrome who underwent BLPs in the period from January 2016 to January 2022.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that confer health benefits to the host when administered in adequate amounts. Although recommendations for probiotic use should be strain-specific, many systematic reviews, including recommendations from different societies, recommend probiotic use in general, providing no relevant information for healthcare professionals regarding which probiotic to recommend for which clinical indication, at what dose, and for how long. This narrative review aimed to present the available evidence on the use of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of common gastrointestinal diseases in children, considering the strain and dose used.

Background And Aims: From the patients' perspective, diet has a relevant role in triggering symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). There is a lack of prospective studies regarding the diet of children with IBD. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and impact of self-imposed elimination diets on the nutritional status and clinical course of disease in the pediatric population.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is one of the most severe complications of the COVID-19 disease. The role of IL-33 and calpain 1 was previously described in lung infections and lung tissue damage. Our study examined the association between serum calpain 1 activity and IL-33 concentration in patients with COVID-19 ARDS.

Available studies report conflicting results on the association of body mass index (BMI) and pathohistological features of thyroid cancer. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between BMI and the pathohistological features of different thyroid cancer types. We analyzed the following data from 95 patients with thyroid cancer: age, gender, BMI, pathohistological characteristics of cancer (tumor size, multifocality, lymphovascular invasion, extrathyroidal invasion) and the presence of regional metastases.

Background: Although it has been shown that allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is well-tolerated in children, systematic and prospective surveillance of AIT safety in real life settings is needed.
Methods: The multinational Allergen Immunotherapy Adverse Events Registry (ADER) was designed to address AIT safety in real life clinical practice. Data on children ≤18 years old with respiratory allergies undergoing AIT were retrieved.

Dietary fibers (DFs) are essential components of human nutrition and are principally defined as non-digestible carbohydrates (oligosaccharides and polysaccharides) usually classified by their physicochemical and physiological characteristics (water solubility, viscosity, fermentability, and bulking effect). Unfortunately, there is limited information on dietary fiber recommendations for children, and the evidence on their effect on health and symptom control is mainly available for the adult population. Therefore, this review aims to give a comprehensive overview of the characteristics and dietary sources of dietary fiber and their potential health benefits in healthy children but also their potential use in the treatment of sick children.

Digital clubbing is most commonly caused by pulmonary or cardiac disease, and only rarely it is a manifestation of a gastroenterological disorder. We report a pediatric patient in whom severe gastroesophageal reflux disease caused anemia and digital clubbing, partial clinical presentation of the Herbst triad.

Objective: We aimed to compare the cellular composition of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids in children with chronic unexplained cough (group 1) and severely neurologically impaired children with chronic or recurrent respiratory problems (group 2) with the BAL cytology of children without pulmonary or systemic diseases (group 3).
Methods: Bronchoscopy with BAL fluid analysis was performed in all subjects. Children with respiratory symptoms underwent 24-hour multichannel intraluminal impedance monitoring.

Introduction. Studies suggest that people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) experience continuous and subclinical physical worsening, even as early as their disease diagnosis. Validating sensitive and reproducible tests that can capture subclinical disease activity early in the disease are clinically useful and highly warranted.

The early-stage diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has significantly increased in incidence worldwide without any beneficial impact on survival. In order to improve the risk assessment in PTC, we have conducted a retrospective study in which we analyzed the BRAF V600E mutation and CPSF2 protein expression as prognostic markers on archival tissue samples of 49 patients without (control group) and 97 patients with (study group) PTC metastases in the cervical lymph nodes at the time of initial diagnosis. Our aim was to correlate the BRAF V600E mutation and the expression of CPSF2 protein with the clinical and pathological features of PTC.

Background: Dietary supplementation with compounds that possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties ( polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), selenium, vitamin E, lutein), has been shown to positively correlate with improvements in chronic conditions, although understanding of these combined effects in healthy humans is limited. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of enriched eggs consumption on oxidative status and inflammatory conditions in healthy volunteers. We hypothesized that a three-week diet containing enriched eggs can alter the immune response of healthy adults towards anti-inflammatory conditions.
