Tracking between cardiovascular-related measures at 4 and 8 years of age in the INMA-Asturias cohort.

Eur J Pediatr

September 2023

Spanish Consortium for Research On Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP), Monforte de Lemos Avenue, 3-5, 28029, Madrid, Spain.

Identifying cardiovascular-related measures that track from early childhood into later ages may help inform early prevention targets for cardiovascular disease. In this study, the tracking of triglycerides (TG), high-density cholesterol (HDL-c), atherogenic coefficient (AC), waist circumference to height ratio (WC/Height), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was examined in the INMA-Asturias cohort between 4 and 8 years of age. The analysis was conducted in 307 children who participated in the INMA-Asturias cohort (Spain) at 4 and at 8 years of age.

Obesity is associated with adipose tissue dysfunction through the differentiation and expansion of pre-adipocytes to adipocytes (hyperplasia) and/or increases in size of pre-existing adipocytes (hypertrophy). A cascade of transcriptional events coordinates the differentiation of pre-adipocytes into fully differentiated adipocytes; the process of adipogenesis. Although nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) has been associated with obesity, how NNMT is regulated during adipogenesis, and the underlying regulatory mechanisms, remain undefined.

Objective: Brain tumors in childhood carry a high risk for endocrine disorders due to the direct effects of the tumor and/or surgery and radiotherapy. Somatotropes are vulnerable to pressure and radiotherapy; therefore, growth hormone deficiency is one of the most frequent abnormalities. This study aimed to evaluate endocrine disorders and recombinant growth hormone treatment outcomes in brain tumor survivors.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the genetic factors contributing to the risk of different cancers by analyzing data from 12 genome-wide association studies, involving nearly 910,000 participants.
  • Researchers discovered 15 new cancer susceptibility loci and found that some genetic variants are shared between multiple cancer types, despite much of the heritability being specific to individual cancers.
  • The findings indicate the importance of using larger sample sizes for more effective cross-cancer analyses, which could unveil additional genetic regions linked to increased cancer risk.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer who are at risk for brain metastases, aiming to evaluate their prognosis and influencing factors.
  • Clinical and pathological features were analyzed for 83 patients, revealing important data such as median overall survival of 34.9 months and various factors that significantly impact prognosis, like estrogen receptor status and the size of brain metastasis.
  • Key findings suggest that larger brain metastasis size and certain treatment combinations (like TDM-1 and lapatinib with capecitabine) play critical roles in determining patient outcomes.

Background And Aims: Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) accounts for 70% of liver-related deaths in Europe, with no effective approved therapies. Although mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the earliest manifestations of alcohol-induced injury, restoring mitochondrial activity remains a problematic strategy due to oxidative stress. Here, we identify methylation-controlled J protein (MCJ) as a mediator for ALD progression and hypothesize that targeting MCJ may help in recovering mitochondrial fitness without collateral oxidative damage.
