Variation in the mitochondrial gene at position 8296 was previously found to be associated with maternally inherited diabetes mellitus and deafness, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, myoclonic epilepsy with ragged-red fibers and mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes. The pathogenicity of the m.8296A>G variation is unclear.

Assestment of minimal residual disease (MRD) in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is of utmost importance both for risk classification and tailoring of the therapy. The data of pediatric ALL patients that received treatment with Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM) protocols were retrospectively collected from 5 university hospitals in Turkey. Of the 1388 patients enrolled in the study 390 were treated according to MRD-based protocols.

Background: The humoral system is activated and various cytokines are released due to infections in tissues and traumatic damage. Nuclear factor-kappa B dimers are encoded by nuclear factor-kappa B genes and regulate transcription of several crucial proteins of inflammation such as tumour necrosis factor-alpha.
Aims: To investigate the possible effect of polymorphisms on tumour necrosis factor-alpha serum levels with clinical and prognostic parameters of sepsis by determining the nuclear factor-kappa B-1-94 ins/del ATTG and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (-308 G/A) gene polymorphisms and tumour necrosis factor-alpha serum levels.

Introduction: Antibodies directed against neuronal surface antigens have recently been identified in patients with focal temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) of unknown cause and mesial TLE with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS), thereby emphasizing the role of autoimmunity in TLE. Antibodies to contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2) are prevalent in MTLE-HS patients. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the frequency of C609T polymorphism in the NQO1 (NAD(P)H) quinon oxydoreductase) gene and its relation to cytogenetic abnormalities in patients with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). The study group consisted of 80 patients MDS with 13 of them in the pediatric age group. The frequency of the NQO1 gene polymorphism was compared with a healthy control group involving 423 individuals.

Objective: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a disease that shows varying clinical progression, and expression of the protein tyrosine kinase ZAP70 has been described as a very valuable prognostic factor. Patients with ZAP70 positivity are characterized by worse clinical course and significantly shorter progression-free and overall survival. In this study, intracytoplasmic interferon gamma (IFN-γ) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) content of T, B, and CLL cells in CLL patients and their correlations with Rai staging and ZAP70 positivity were investigated.

The sensitivity of renin release to changes in anion and calcium concentrations was assessed in superfused rat glomeruli with attached juxtaglomerular cells. Isosmotic substitution of Cl-with gluconate (1/12, 1/6, 1/3, 2/3, or total exchange), isethionate (15 or 101 mM), or sulfate (10 mM) inhibited renin release reversibly. Lithium and sodium are normally reabsorbed in parallel with water by the renal proximal tubule whereby their tubular fluid-to-plasma concentration ratios (TF/P) remain close to unity throughout the proximal convoluted segment. During osmotic diuresis, the late proximal (TF/P)Na is known to decrease. The present experiments were undertaken to study whether the late proximal TF/P for Li decreases like that of Na during osmotic diuresis.

In the present study, we characterized the effects of the calcium (Ca2+) channel activator BAY K 8644 on sodium (Na+) absorption and transepithelial potential difference (Pd) in the rabbit gall-bladder. In gall-bladders mounted in an Ussing chamber it was observed that serosal BAY K 8644 (10(-5) M) inhibited Na+ absorption in the presence, but not in the absence of serosal Ca2+. Serosal nifedipine (a Ca2+ channel antagonist) at 10(-5) M did not reverse the Na+ transport inhibition caused by BAY K 8644.

Juxtaglomerular cells in vitro are sensitive to changes in osmolality, but it is unknown whether volume-regulatory changes in cellular ion fluxes are important for the renin secretory process. The sensitivity of renin release to increases in osmolality by NaCl was therefore tested on superfused rat glomeruli treated with bicarbonate/chloride exchange inhibitor (DNDS), NaCl/KCl cotransport inhibitor (bumetanide), or Na+/H+ antiport inhibitor (amiloride) in the presence or absence of bicarbonate. In addition, the sensitivity to increases in osmolality by addition of sucrose was tested in the presence or absence of bicarbonate.
