Heavy metal assessment in Dakhla Bay (Atlantic coast) was carried out using different environmental and ecological indices. Heavy metal concentrations were measured using ICP-AES and were compared with consensus-based sediment quality guidelines. The distribution of heavy metal concentrations varies for the three groups: (i) lead distribution is dominated by its associations with copper and chromium.

The TLR2 and TLR4 gene polymorphisms in Moroccan visceral leishmaniasis patients.

Acta Trop

June 2016

Laboratory of Parasitology and Vector-Borne-Diseases, Institut Pasteur du Maroc, Casablanca, Morocco. Electronic address:

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in the Mediterranean basin and leads to the most severe form of Leishmania infection, lethal if left untreated. However, most infections are sub-clinical or asymptomatic, reflecting the influence of host genetic background on disease outcome. This study aimed to investigate possible association of TLR4 Asp299Gly, TLR4 Thr399Ile and TLR2 Arg753Gln polymorphisms with VL in Moroccan children.

Since it was first diagnosed in 1914 in Marrakesh, schistosomiasis has been a public health problem in Morocco for decades. A national control program launched in 1982 has led to a considerable reduction in the incidence and morbidity associated with the disease. Consequently, the program has shifted from disease control to an elimination process launched in 1994.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore how macronutrient intake affects body composition and bone mineral content in Moroccan children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) by using dietary recalls and DXA measurements.
  • - In a sample of 33 JIA patients aged around 10 years, the results indicated a positive correlation between carbohydrate intake and lean body mass, while no significant associations were found with fat mass or bone mineral content.
  • - The researchers concluded that while carbohydrate intake may benefit lean body mass, further research with a larger participant pool is needed to validate these findings regarding fat mass and bone mineral content.

A square-planar Ni(II) dibenzotetraaza[14]annulene complex substituted with two 3,3-dimethylindolenine groups in the meso positions has recently been synthesized and characterized experimentally. In the solid-state, the Ni(II) complex forms linear π-interacting stacks with Ni···Ni separations of 3.448(2) Å.

Identification of Differentially Expressed Genes by
cDNA-AFLP Technique in Response to Drought Stress

Functional Genomic Platform, Technical Unit (UATRS), National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST), Angle Allal Fassi, Avenue des FAR, Hay Riad, BP 8027, 10102 Rabat, Morocco.

Drought is the single largest abiotic stress factor leading to reduced crop yields. The identification of differentially expressed genes and the understanding of their functions in environmentally stressful conditions are essential to improve drought tolerance. Transcriptomics is a powerful approach for the global analysis of molecular mechanisms under abiotic stress.

SLC11A1 polymorphisms and susceptibility to visceral leishmaniasis in Moroccan patients.

Acta Trop

December 2014

Laboratoire de parasitologie et maladies vectorielles, Institut Pasteur du Maroc, Casablanca, Morocco. Electronic address:

Human visceral leishmaniasis is endemic in the Mediterranean basin. Since most infections are sub-clinical or asymptomatic, host genetics can provide concrete evidence in determining disease outcome. SLC11A1/NRAMP1 is a candidate gene that may be related to host susceptibility versus resistance to intracellular pathogens.

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components based on a harmonious definition among adults in Morocco.

Diabetes Metab Syndr Obes

August 2014

Laboratory of Genetic, Neuroendocrinology and Biotechnology, University Ibn Tofail, Faculty of Sciences, Kenitra, Morocco.

Purpose: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases that includes central obesity, hypertension, glucose intolerance, high triglyceride, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Its prevalence is rapidly increasing worldwide. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated risk factors in a representative sample of Morocco adults using the 2009 joint interim statement definition.

The aim of this research is to search for the distribution of blood groups in all the regions of Morocco. This study, done for the first time, aimed to provide the frequency of the Rhesus system and Kell (K) in more than 55000 blood donors from nine different regions around the country. In addition, the frequency of the Cellano, Duffy, Kidd, and MNS blood antigens was searched for 500 blood donors from the Rabat's region.

Evaluation of the anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and tomato waste at mesophilic temperature.

Appl Biochem Biotechnol

April 2014

Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology and Quality, Faculty of Sciences, University Ibn Tofail (Morocco), BP 133, Kenitra, Morocco.

Sewage sludge is a hazardous waste, which must be managed adequately. Mesophilic anaerobic digestion is a widely employed treatment for sewage sludge involving several disadvantages such as low methane yield, poor biodegradability, and nutrient imbalance. Tomato waste was proposed as an easily biodegradable co-substrate to increase the viability of the process in a centralized system.

The Δ(9-)Tetrahydrocannabinol (THCA) is the primary psychoactive compound of Cannabis Sativa. It is produced by Δ(1-) Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid synthase (THCA) which catalyzes the oxidative cyclization of cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) the precursor of the THCA. In this study, we were interested by the three dimensional structure of THCA synthase protein.

The combined effects of macronutrients of media on glucoamylase production by Candida guilliermendii were studied using Design Of Experiment (DOE). A 2(P-k) factorial design was chosen to explain fifteen medium constituents: pH, Starch, Sucrose, Yeast extract, Peptone, NH4Cl (NH4)2HPO4, NH4NO3, CH4NO2 (NH4)2SO4, CaCl2, MnCl2, FeCl2, ZnCl2 and MgCl2 and analyse the results. This procedure limited the number of actual experiments performed while allowing for possible interactions between components.
