Altered functional connectivity of the language network in ASD: role of classical language areas and cerebellum.

The development of language, social interaction and communicative skills is remarkably different in the child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Atypical brain connectivity has frequently been reported in this patient population. However, the neural correlates underlying their disrupted language development and functioning are still poorly understood.

Integrity of the inferior longitudinal fasciculus and impaired object recognition in children: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

Aim:   In this study, we explored the integrity of the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) by means of diffusion tensor imaging tractography in children with visual perceptual impairment, and more specifically, object recognition deficits, compared with typically developing children.

Methods:   Eleven individuals (nine males, two females; mean age 7 y 8 mo; range 3 y 5 mo-13 y) were assessed with the L94 visual perceptual battery after assessment of performance age. In all participants, an ophthalmological evaluation was carried out.

Is there a common neuroanatomical substrate of language deficit between autism spectrum disorder and specific language impairment?

Discussion of an overlap between specific language impairment (SLI) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is on going. Screening for cerebral visual impairment: value of a CVI questionnaire.

The objective of the study was to investigate the screening utility of a questionnaire for cerebral visual impairment (CVI) by correlating the questionnaire with diagnostic tools such as the L94, the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills - Revised and the Visual Perception subtask of the Beery test of VisuoMotor Integration.The questionnaire consisted of 46 items, exploring different characteristics of CVI. We consecutively recruited 91 children.

Early versus late parenteral nutrition in critically ill adults.

Background: Controversy exists about the timing of the initiation of parenteral nutrition in critically ill adults in whom caloric targets cannot be met by enteral nutrition alone.

Methods: In this randomized, multicenter trial, we compared early initiation of parenteral nutrition (European guidelines) with late initiation (American and Canadian guidelines) in adults in the intensive care unit (ICU) to supplement insufficient enteral nutrition. In 2312 patients, parenteral nutrition was initiated within 48 hours after ICU admission (early-initiation group), whereas in 2328 patients, parenteral nutrition was not initiated before day 8 (late-initiation group).

Neuroimaging of autism.

Neuroimaging studies done by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have provided important insights into the neurobiological basis for autism. The aim of this article is to review the current state of knowledge regarding brain abnormalities in autism. Results of structural MRI studies dealing with total brain volume, the volume of the cerebellum, caudate nucleus, thalamus, amygdala and the area of the corpus callosum are summarised.

Construction of a stereotaxic DTI atlas with full diffusion tensor information for studying white matter maturation from childhood to adolescence using tractography-based segmentations.

Reconstruction of white matter (WM) fiber tracts based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is increasingly being used in clinical and research settings to study normal and pathological WM tissue as well as the maturation of this WM tissue. Such fiber tracking (FT) methodology, however, is highly dependent on the manual delineation of anatomical landmarks and the algorithm settings, often rendering the reproducibility and reliability questionable. Predefining these regions of interest on a fractional anisotropy (FA) atlas in standard space has already been shown to improve the reliability of FT results.

Quantitative diffusion tensor imaging in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: revisited.

Voxel-based analyses (VBA) are increasingly being used to detect white matter abnormalities with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in different types of pathologies. However, the validity, specificity, and sensitivity of statistical inferences of group differences to a large extent depend on the quality of the spatial normalization of the DTI images. Using high-dimensional nonrigid coregistration techniques that are able to align both the spatial and orientational diffusion information and incorporate appropriate templates that contain this complete DT information may improve this quality.

Azathioprine induced colitis: a case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of an allergic hypersensitivity reaction on azathioprine presenting with colitis. Allergic reactions on azathioprine are common in patient with inflammatory bowel disease. The clinic of the allergic reaction on azathioprine in our patient was atypical in the way it mimicked an acute exacerbation of inflammatory bowel disease.

Quantitative diffusion tensor imaging in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Objective: Aim of present study was to evaluate changes in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters in the whole brain of 28 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) compared to 26 healthy controls.

Methods: In both fibertracking and voxel-based analysis, quantitative comparisons of the diffusion parameters between ALS patients and controls were performed. Correlation analyses of diffusion parameters and disease duration and disease severity were performed.

delta-Storage pool disease: a pitfall in the forensic investigation of sudden anal blood loss in children: a case report.

We present the case of a 3.5-year-old boy with sudden anal blood loss at school. Sexual abuse was suspected, and, apart from anal fissures seen on sigmoidoscopy, no other clinical signs of any sort of disorder were present.

External fixation of the distal end of the radius: the same technique for different patient populations?

A series of 56 consecutive patients with 59 fractures of the distal end of the radius, treated with a unilateral Hoffmann external fixator between 1980 and 1988, is presented. Forty-seven of these patients underwent clinical re-examination at home. We could distinguish two different groups of patients: an older female group with an average age of 59.

The hospital of Brugge relies on selection of the emergency calls and sends a Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) whenever cardiac arrest (CA) is suspected. The University Hospital of Leuven does no selection of calls and responds to every emergency call by sending an ambulance with an advanced life support (ALS) trained nurse. The MICU is called when the ambulance crew recognizes the emergency to be a CA.

An early prediction score (EPS) is constructed as the sum of five events: the type of cardiac arrest is ventricular fibrillation; the type of respiratory arrest is gasping; pupil reaction is unequal, slow or normal, but present; swallowing activity is present and the cardiac arrest has been witnessed. Presence of any of these events contributes one point to the score, while absence contributes nothing to it. EPS during resuscitation results in a comparable amount of information, whether used to predict success, alive and conscious 14 days post-CPR or no-success.
