Background: Testosterone is the standard treatment for male hypogonadism, but there is uncertainty about its cardiovascular safety due to inconsistent findings. We aimed to provide the most extensive individual participant dataset (IPD) of testosterone trials available, to analyse subtypes of all cardiovascular events observed during treatment, and to investigate the effect of incorporating data from trials that did not provide IPD.

Methods: We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials including IPD.

Background Assisted reproductive technology (ART) has emerged as a common treatment option for infertility, a problem that affects an estimated 48 million couples worldwide. Advancing maternal age with increasing prepregnancy cardiovascular risk factors, such as chronic hypertension, obesity, and diabetes, has raised concerns about pregnancy complications associated with ART. However, in-hospital complications following pregnancies conceived by ART are poorly described.

Objective: Strict competency frameworks exist for training in, and provision of, clinical neuropsychological assessment practice. However, as in all disciplines, daily clinical practice may drift from the gold standard practice without routine monitoring and audit. A simple-to-use, but thorough and evidence-based audit tool has been developed to facilitate the tracking, maintenance, and discussion of best practice over time.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at the results of a heart surgery called surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in over 31,000 people in the UK, including those who also had another surgery called CABG.
  • It found that the risk of dying from the surgery was low, around 1.9% for those with only SAVR and a bit higher for those who had CABG too.
  • The study showed that the type of surgery and the patient's health before surgery affected the outcomes, but most surgeries were planned ahead of time rather than done in emergencies.

Potential of the common facial vein as a recipient vein in free flap reconstruction.

Clin Anat

November 2021

Keele Medical School Anatomy Department, Keele University, Keele, Staffordshire, UK.

Recipient vessel selection for free flap reconstruction depends on numerous factors and may be limited due to previous treatment. Currently, little evidence is available regarding the anatomy and reconstructive potential of the common facial vein (CFV), a tributary of the internal jugular vein (IJV). The aim of this project was to determine the diameter of the CFV at various points along its course and identify suitable landmarks to locate the CFV, to consider the vessel as a potential recipient vein in free flap reconstruction.

Introduction: Prevention of fragility fractures, a source of significant economic and personal burden, is hindered by poor uptake of fracture prevention medicines. Enhancing communication of scientific evidence and elicitation of patient medication-related beliefs has the potential to increase patient commitment to treatment. The mproving uptake of cture revention drug treatments (iFraP) programme aims to develop and evaluate a theoretically informed, complex intervention consisting of a computerised web-based decision support tool, training package and information resources, to facilitate informed decision-making about fracture prevention treatment, with a long-term aim of improving informed treatment adherence.

Modern ventilators are increasingly compact and able to deliver a wide range of ventilator modes and sophisticated monitoring capabilities. However, the global availability of ventilators is woefully short of demand. Data on intensive care units (ICUs), a proxy measure for hospital ventilator capacity in low and middle-income countries (LMIC's), suggest that capacity is extremely limited where it exists at all.
