Exploring Students' Perceptions and Experiences of Raising Concerns During Pre-Registration Training in England: A Systematic Review.

Aim: To explore the perceptions and experiences of students raising concerns during pre-registration health and/or social care training in England.

Design: Systematic review.

Data Sources: MEDLINE, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO and Education Research Complete were systematically searched for studies published between September 2015 and August 2024.

Locally Employed Doctors and International Medical Graduates in the NHS: Current and Evolving Trends.

Locally Employed Doctors (LEDs) are defined as any doctor below consultant grade, appointed within a UK National Health Service (NHS) Trust, who are not working within a national training scheme. They are a cohort significantly increasing in numbers. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are overseas-qualified doctors who contribute to more than 30% of the workforce-related deficit in the number of UK-qualified doctors required to meet NHS requirements.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Among Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in North Bihar and Missed Opportunities for Early Diagnosis.

Background: There are no studies investigating missed opportunities for earlier diagnosis in newly/recently detected Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in the region of Bihar, India.

Methods: This study is a single-center cross-sectional study undertaken at the Research Centre for Diabetes Hypertension and Obesity, Samastipur, Bihar, India. The study collected data from newly/recently diagnosed persons with T2DM.

How do patients determine when their inhaler is empty? Insights from an analysis of returned inhalers and a patient survey.

Background: Inhalers are widely used for the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, there is little knowledge about the extent to which an inhaler is used and when it is disposed of, despite the implications for an individual's health (when used beyond the recommended number of doses (overused)), and medicine wastage, healthcare costs and the environment (when discarded with remaining doses (underused)). To explore inhaler use, we assessed the number of doses remaining in pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) returned via a Chiesi Inhaler Recycling scheme.

Assessing disability progression using the WHODAS 2.0 in multiple sclerosis: Investigating clinical and socio-demographic factors in a large longitudinal cohort study (TONiC-MS).

Background: Identifying influences on disability accumulation in multiple sclerosis (MS), including modifiable factors other than the core features of disease itself, is vital for clinical care, but has often relied on instruments with acknowledged psychometric shortcomings. We model MS disability using the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) 2.0, a validated measure based on the WHO's biopsychosocial model and sensitive to the breadth of disability-related domains important to people, to investigate the factors associated with its trajectory after diagnosis.

The Impact of Age and Sex on Fasting Plasma Glucose and Glycated Haemoglobin (HbA1c) in the Non-diabetes Population.

Introduction: We previously reported sex differences in the distribution of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) for men/women aged < 50 years vs older individuals, with implications for delayed diabetes diagnosis. Here, we explored whether this pattern was also seen in matched fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels.

Methods: We extracted data on same-day, paired HbA1c and FPG levels from clinical biochemistry laboratory databases from Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (n = 10,153) and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (n = 10,022) between Jan 2019 and Dec 2023.

Physiotherapists' Experiences and Perceived Acceptability of Delivering a Knee Bracing Intervention for People With Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis in a Randomised Trial (PROP OA): A Qualitative Study.

Objectives: To explore physiotherapists' experiences and perceived acceptability of delivering a bracing intervention for knee osteoarthritis (OA) in the 'PROvision of braces for Patients with knee OA' (PROP OA) randomised controlled trial.

Method: Semi-structured telephone interviews with consenting physiotherapists who received the PROP OA training programme and delivered the knee bracing intervention (advice, information and exercise instruction plus knee brace matched to patients' clinical and radiographic presentation and with adherence support). Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim.

Development and Preliminary Testing of the Staffordshire Questionnaire for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (SQ-AIS): Content and Face Validity.

Introduction: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a structural spinal deformity with implications for health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). The Scoliosis Research Society-22 revised (SRS-22r) questionnaire is the standard for HR-QoL assessment. However, studies have identified limitations with the SRS-22r, including content and face validity issues, reliability concerns, and language appropriateness.

Statin-treated RBC dynamics in a microfluidic porous-like network.

The impact of therapeutic interventions on red blood cell (RBC) deformability and microscale transport is investigated, using statins as an exemplar. Human RBCs were treated in vitro with two commonly prescribed statins, atorvastatin and rosuvastatin, at clinically relevant concentrations. Changes in RBC deformability were quantified using a microfluidic-based ektacytometer and expressed in terms of the elongation index.

Centre-level fluid management practices in the BISTRO trial and their lack of association with participant fluid status and blood pressure in non-anuric haemodialysis patients.

Introduction: Fluid assessment and management is a key aspect of good dialysis care and is affected by patient-level characteristics and potentially centre-level practices. In this secondary analysis of the BISTRO trial we wished to establish whether centre-level practices with the potential to affect fluid status were stable over the course of the trial and explore if they had any residual associations with participant's fluid status.

Methods: Two surveys (S) of fluid management practices were conducted in 32 participating centres during the trial, (S1: 2017-18 and S2: 2021-22).

Impact of the Preservation of Residual Kidney Function on Hemodialysis Survival: Results from the BISTRO Trial.

Background: Preservation of residual kidney function (RKF) in dialysis patients has been associated with improved survival. RKF in the BISTRO trial was relatively well preserved and here we describe its association with survival during the trial and extended follow-up.

Methods: RKF, measured as the average urea and creatinine clearance (GFR) or 24-hour urine volume was assessed at baseline, one, two and three months and three-monthly up to 2 years in incident haemodialysis patients.
