Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common malignancy in the UK and represents a high-volume diagnostic and clinical burden on the National Health Service (NHS). To maximise the use of limited diagnostic resources and increase efficiency, the colorectal services at University Hospitals North Midlands Trust (UHNM) developed the triage-to-test (TTT) service with risk stratification for diagnostic testing in patients with suspected colorectal cancer using faecal immunochemical testing (FIT) result. Our retrospective cohort study looked at the pick-up rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) and non-colorectal cancer (non-CRC) in FIT-negative patients.

The management of cancer patients has markedly improved with the advent of personalised medicine where treatments are given based on tumour antigen expression amongst other. Within this remit, liquid biopsies will no doubt improve this personalised cancer management. Identifying circulating tumour cells in blood allows a better assessment for tumour screening, staging, response to treatment and follow up.

Despite national and international guidelines, asthma is frequently misdiagnosed, control is poor and unnecessary deaths are far too common. Large scale asthma management programme such as that undertaken in Finland, can improve asthma outcomes. A primary care asthma management quality improvement programme was developed with the support of the British Lung Foundation (now Asthma + Lung UK) and Optimum Patient Care (OPC) Limited.

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) outcomes are comparable to mastectomy in breast cancer treatment. However, patients with large tumours were offered mastectomy due to the resulting poor cosmetic sequelae after standard BCS. With the introduction of chest wall perforator flaps (CWPF), BCS is an option in patients with large tumour:breast ratio.

Background: The case report detailed an unusual presentation of an iatrogenic dorsal cord herniation at the level of the thoracic cord after insertion of an epidural catheter 8 months before presentation to the neurosurgical clinic.
Observations: Only 13 cases of iatrogenic dorsal cord herniation, most of which occurred after spinal surgery, have been described in the literature. This was the first case of a spinal cord hernia described after the insertion of an epidural catheter.

Introduction: DCE-MRI is established for detecting prostate cancer (PCa). However, it requires a gadolinium contrast agent, with potential risks for patients. The application of DIR-MRI is simple and may allow cancer detection without the use of an intravenous contrast agent by differentially nullifying signal from normal and abnormal prostate tissue, creating contrast between the cancer and background normal prostate.

The rising incidence of cancer worldwide is causing an increase in the workload in pathology departments. This, coupled with advanced analysis methodologies, supports a developing need for techniques that could identify the presence of cancer cells in cytology and tissue samples in an objective, fast, and automated way. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) microspectroscopy can identify cancer cells in such samples objectively.

In spite of new drugs, lung cancer is associated with a very poor prognosis. While targeted therapies are improving outcomes, it is not uncommon for many patients to have only a partial response, and relapse during follow-up. Thus, new drugs or re-evaluation of existing therapies used to treat other non-malignant diseases (drug repurposing) are still needed.
