In recent years, the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has suffered a variety of alterations. Chemotherapy (CTX), immunotherapy (IT) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) have shown remarkable results. However, not all patients with NSCLC respond to these drug treatments or receive durable benefits.

Lung cancer continues to be a significant burden worldwide and remains the leading cause of cancer-associated mortality. Two considerable challenges posed by this disease are the diagnosis of 61% of patients in advanced stages and the reduced five-year survival rate of around 4%. Noninvasively collected samples are gaining significant interest as new areas of knowledge are being sought and opened up.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is a by-product of mitochondrial activity and is necessary for the acquisition of the capacitated state, a requirement for functional spermatozoa. However, an increase in oxidative stress, due to an abnormal production of ROS, has been shown to be related to loss of sperm function, highlighting the importance of an accurate detection of sperm ROS, given the specific nature of this cell. In this work, we tested a variety of commercially available fluorescent probes to detect ROS and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in human sperm, to define their specificity.

Prevention of hepatic fat accumulation may be an important approach for liver diseases due to the increased relevance of hepatic steatosis in this field. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the antioxidant α-lipoic acid (α-LA) on hepatic steatosis, hepatocellular function, and oxidative stress in a model of type 2 diabetes fed with a high fat diet (HFD). Goto-Kakizaki rats were randomly divided into four groups.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignant tumors of the digestive tract and is the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been associated with approximately 10% of the total cases of gastric carcinomas. No previous study has analyzed the prevalence of EBV infection in gastric cancer of the Portuguese population.

Characteristically identified as the main component of senile plaques present in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease, Aβ has been detected in human testis and reproductive fluids, but its effect on spermatozoa has not been addressed. The present study evaluated whether the most toxic and aggregant amyloid precursor protein (APP)-proteolytic product, amyloid-β (Aβ), was capable of affecting sperm functionality. Normozoospermic samples were either exposed to different Aβ doses or to the untreated and scrambled controls for a maximum of 48 h at 37 °C and 5%CO, and motility, viability and mitochondrial status were evaluated.

Background And Aims: Atherosclerotic plaque molecular imaging with F-sodium fluoride (NaF) in positron emission tomography with computed tomography (PET-CT) provides potential discrimination between active unstable microcalcification and established dormant calcification. We aimed to study F-NaF atherosclerotic plaque uptake in high cardiovascular (CV) risk participants and its associations with CV risk factors, coronary calcium score and thoracic fat volume.
Methods: High CV risk hypertensive individuals from a single centre were prospectively scanned with F-NaF-PET-CT in the coronary, aortic and carotideal arteries.

Introduction: Bronchiolitis is a heterogeneous group of diseases of an inflammatory nature, centered on small conducting airways and often associated with other pulmonary disorders. No single classification scheme for bronchiolar diseases has been widely accepted. In this retrospective study, it was decided to apply a new clinical and pathological interpretative classification.

Importance: E-cadherin (CDH1) is a cancer predisposition gene mutated in families meeting clinically defined hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC). Reliable estimates of cancer risk and spectrum in germline mutation carriers are essential for management. For families without CDH1 mutations, genetic-based risk stratification has not been possible, resulting in limited clinical options.

Lung tumour subtyping, particularly the distinction between adenocarcinoma (AdC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC), is a critical diagnostic requirement. In this work, the metabolic signatures of lung carcinomas were investigated through (1)H NMR metabolomics, with a view to provide additional criteria for improved diagnosis and treatment planning. High Resolution Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to analyse matched tumour and adjacent control tissues from 56 patients undergoing surgical excision of primary lung carcinomas.

Background: The production of competent oocytes depends on a bi-directional communication between the oocyte and cumulus cells. The goal of this study was to determine whether simple parameters monitored in cumulus cells from individual human oocytes have any predictive value, and thus correlate with clinically relevant parameters.
Methods: 97 cumulus-oocyte complexes were recovered from 31 patients undergoing ICSI treatment.

Objectives: Fibrosis, related to several causes, can be diagnosed in children and adolescents' liver grafts that are >1 year old. At present, liver biopsy is the gold standard for assessing liver damage in the posttransplant setting. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of noninvasive biomarkers of fibrosis, namely, acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI), aspartate-to-platelet ratio index, and aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio index, either alone or in combination, for predicting fibrosis in pediatric patients submitted to liver transplantation.

The authors report a clinical case of an isolated oral histoplasmosis in a hemodialysis patient that presented with fever of unknown origin and had an unremarkable physical examination. During the investigation, a Gallium scan showed uptake in the oral cavity and soon after the oral cavity examination revealed a granulomatous lesion on the tooth 26. Histopathologic findings were compatible with histoplasmosis.

Unlabelled: Different inhalational anesthetics have various hemodynamic effects, either on the global circulation or on kidney perfusion. These drugs are also different concerning their potential for renal toxicity. The potential influence of the choice of the halogenated anesthetion in the outcome of kidney transplantation has not been previously studied, which was the purpose of this observational study.
