Objectives: Kidney transplant survival can be improved with better graft surveillance postoperatively. In the quest to explore new technologies, we explored the feasibility of an implantable Doppler probe as a blood flow monitoring device in kidney transplant patients. This qualitative study was embeddedin a feasibility trial and aimed to test the device's clinical acceptability and obtain suggestions for the development of the intervention.

The anti-IgE monoclonal antibody omalizumab is widely used for severe asthma. This study aimed to identify biomarkers that predict clinical improvement during 1 year of omalizumab treatment. One-year open-label Study of Mechanisms of action of Omalizumab in Severe Asthma (SoMOSA) involving 216 patients with severe (Global Initiative for Asthma step 4/5) uncontrolled atopic asthma (at least two severe exacerbations in the previous year) taking high-dose inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β-agonists with or without maintenance oral corticosteroids.

External iliac artery dissection is a catastrophic complication during kidney transplant surgery. We present a technically challenging case of external iliac artery dissection that occurred in severely atherosclerotic vessels of a high-risk patient receiving his third kidney transplant. The intimal dissection constituted by the upstream application of a vascular clamp during the preparatory dissection ofthe vessels and progressed rapidly along the iliofemoral axis.

Background: Parkinson disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease, with around 10 million people with PD worldwide. Current assessments of PD symptoms are conducted by questionnaires and clinician assessments and have many limitations, including unreliable reporting of symptoms, little autonomy for patients over their disease management, and standard clinical review intervals regardless of disease status or clinical need. To address these limitations, digital technologies including wearable sensors, smartphone apps, and artificial intelligence (AI) methods have been implemented for this population.

Objectives: The shortage of donor organs is the most limiting factor in kidney transplant practice today. New monitoring technologies are being investigated to reduce graft loss due to vascular complications. We assessed the feasibility of a novel blood flow monitoring device, the implantable Doppler probe, in kidney transplant surgery.

Folate, vitamin D and iodine are key micronutrients in pregnancy, with deficiency associated with poor maternal and infant outcomes. For folate and vitamin D especially, deficiency is more common amongst women with obesity and recommended intakes and guidance on supplementation varies worldwide. The present study aims to investigate dietary and supplementary intakes of these micronutrients amongst a population of pregnant women with obesity in the United Kingdom, alongside key maternal demographic characteristics.

Background: The internationally accepted criteria for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis (AP) requires two of the three following features to be present: characteristic abdominal pain, elevated serum amylase and/or lipase enzymes, or consistent imaging results. However, sensitivity and specificity can vary depending on the population and cut-off values used.
Objective: This study evaluated the suitability of amylase and lipase as first-line diagnostic biomarkers of suspected AP for the local population served by Tygerberg Hospital, South Africa.

Background: It is widely acknowledged that maternal obesity and excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) are associated with increased risk of fetal macrosomia and recent studies have suggested a role for the timing and composition of GWG.
Aims: To examine the effect of the rate of change in GWG and maternal upper-body subcutaneous fat on neonatal anthropometric outcomes in a pilot observational study amongst women with obesity.
Study Design: Expectant women with a body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m at first antenatal appointment were recruited at 12 weeks gestation.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a fatal disease presenting with rapidly progressive dementia, and most patients die within a year of clinical onset. CJD poses a potential risk of iatrogenic transmission, as it can incubate asymptomatically in humans for decades before becoming clinically apparent. In this Review, we sought evidence to understand the current iatrogenic risk of CJD to public health by examining global evidence on all forms of CJD, including clinical incidence and prevalence of subclinical disease.

In humans, the three main circulating monocyte subsets are defined by their relative cell surface expression of CD14 and CD16. They are all challenging to study because their characteristics are strongly context specific, and this has led to a range of conflicting reports about their function, which is especially so for CD14CD16 (intermediate) monocytes. Ex vivo cultures are also often confounded by the concomitant use of immunosuppressive drugs.
