Mortality rates in people presenting with a new diabetes-related foot ulcer: a cohort study with implications for management.

Aims/hypothesis: People with diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFUs) have high mortality rates. This analysis assesses the impact of selected risk factors on short-term mortality using a population registered in the National Diabetes Foot Care Audit (NDFA).

Methods: Mortality rates at 12, 26 and 52 weeks was assessed in people with a new DFU registered by a specialist diabetes footcare service in the NDFA in England and Wales between April 2017 and March 2022.

Well-leg compartment syndrome is a rare and severe complication that occurs after prolonged surgery in the lithotomy position. This review outlines the presentation, diagnosis, and management of well-leg compartment syndrome after colorectal surgery. A comprehensive and systematic search of various electronic databases was conducted.

Presentation and characteristics of children with screen-detected type 1 diabetes: learnings from the ELSA general population pediatric screening study.

Introduction: We describe the identification and management of general population screen-detected type 1 diabetes (T1D) and share learnings for best practice.

National introduction of one-anastomosis gastric bypass in the UK National Bariatric Surgery Registry: a cohort study.

Aim: There is a paucity of evidence regarding the national introduction of newer bariatric metabolic surgery procedures. This study assessed the impact of introducing one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) in bariatric surgical practice in the UK on 30-day postoperative morbidity and early postoperative weight loss.

Methods: Patients who underwent primary BMS in the UK National Bariatric Surgical Registry (2010-2019) were identified.

Carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in adults hospitalised with community-acquired pneumonia.

Objectives: We aimed to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for nasopharyngeal and oral pneumococcal carriage in adults with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and the relationship between carried and disease-causing serotypes.

Methods: Between 2016 and 2018, nasopharyngeal swabs, oral-fluid, and urine were collected from hospitalised adults recruited into a prospective cohort study of CAP. Pneumococcal carriage was detected by semi-quantitative real-time PCR of direct and culture-enriched nasopharyngeal swabs and culture-enriched oral-fluid.

The influence of miscentering on radiation dose during computed tomography head examinations and the role of localiser orientation: A phantom study.

Introduction: Computed Tomography (CT) chest, abdomen and pelvis research demonstrates a relationship between vertical phantom positioning and radiation dose. Moving the phantom closer or further from the x-ray source results in magnification or minimisation of the localiser. As automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) algorithms use localisers to estimate patient size and calculate required tube current, magnification or minimisation results in the incorrect provision of radiation dose.

Structured training pathway for robotic colorectal surgery: Short-term outcomes from five UK centres.

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the short-term outcomes of robotic colorectal surgery implemented through a structured, standardized training pathway in five colorectal centres in the United Kingdom.

Method: A multicentre retrospective observational study was conducted, involving 523 consecutive patients who underwent robotic colorectal resection between 2015 and 2019. All participating centres followed the European Academy of Robotic Colorectal Surgery training pathway.

Digital wound monitoring with artificial intelligence to prioritise surgical wounds in cardiac surgery patients for priority or standard review: protocol for a randomised feasibility trial (WISDOM).

Introduction: Digital surgical wound monitoring for patients at home is becoming an increasingly common method of wound follow-up. This regular monitoring improves patient outcomes by detecting wound complications early and enabling treatment to start before complications worsen. However, reviewing the digital data creates a new and additional workload for staff.

Objectives: This study aimed to understand the lived experiences of patients on the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) pathway up to 3 months before, 3 months after and 1 year after surgery. Study objectives were to explore (1) patient experiences of preoperative and postoperative treatment, (2) views of/involvement in prehabilitation and (3) sources and consistency of healthcare advice.

Background: Although one objective of NHS 111 is to ease the strain on urgent and emergency care services, studies suggest the telephone triage service may be contributing to increased demand. Moreover, while parents and caregivers generally find NHS 111 satisfactory, concerns exist about its integration with the healthcare system and the appropriateness of advice. This study aimed to analyse the advice provided in NHS 111 calls, the duration between the call and ED attendance, and the outcomes of such attendances made by children and young people (C&YP).

Motivations for and experiences of childbirth abroad amongst Nigerian women: A qualitative study.

Birth tourism, the practice of a woman travelling out of her country of residence to another country to give birth, is common globally. Despite this, there is limited literature on the motivations and experiences of women who gave birth abroad. This study aims to address this gap by seeking to understand the motivations for and experiences of childbirth abroad among Nigerian women.

Endovascular thrombectomy vs best medical management for late presentation acute ischaemic stroke with large vessel occlusion without CT perfusion or MR imaging selection: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: The efficacy and safety of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) beyond 6 hours from stroke onset for patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO) selected without CT perfusion(CTP) or MR imaging(MRI) is undetermined. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current literature comparing outcomes for late presenting patients with LVO treated by best medical management (BMM) with those selected for EVT based only on non-contrast CT(NCCT)/CT angiography(CTA) (without CTP or MRI).

Methods: PRISMA guidelines were employed.

Mapping the migrant diagnostic radiographers in the UK: A national survey.

Introduction: The international recruitment of healthcare workers remains a UK strategy to manage workforce gaps and maintain service delivery. Although not a new phenomenon, this has been exacerbated by chronic shortages. There is a need to profile the current international recruits and identify individual motivators to understand the opportunities for future recruitment and retention initiatives.
