Background: Chronic kidney disease is a predictor of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Therefore, the medical expenses are higher with the decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). However, few studies have examined the medical expenses according to the baseline GFR.

We evaluated QUANTA Lite reagent series (INOVA Diagnostics, CA, USA) to determine antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and autoantibodies to double-stranded (ds) DNA, SS-A and SS-B, in parallel with MESACUP (Medical & Biological Laboratories, Nagoya). Overall agreements between two reagents for qualitative interpretation ranged from 77.5% (ANA) to 99.

Background: Elevated heart rate (HR) is an independent risk factor for all-cause death or cardiovascular events in non-hemodialysis subjects; however, the clinical significance of elevated HR in hemodialysis patients is not well studied.
Methods: We prospectively evaluated the relationship between HR and adverse outcome in a total of 229 ambulatory hemodialysis patients (57 % men; mean age 62.2 years) recruited from two dialysis clinics in 2009.

In response to the revision of social medical insurance policy, in which hospital clinics can additionally charge for laboratory testing when the test results are presented to an outpatient in a print-out form on a visiting day, we evaluated laboratory-spending times, so-called turnaround times (TATs). A total of 14,802 outpatients during the period from October 2010 to May 2011 were enrolled. TATs from venipuncture accession to completing blood collection revealed a log-normal distribution with 5 to 6 min of mode and 10(0.

We investigated the association between resting heart rate (HR) and inflammation markers in a healthy population. White blood cell (WBC) count was used as a surrogate marker of subclinical inflammation. Smoking status, body mass index, resting HR, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid, and glycated hemoglobin were significantly associated with WBC in both men and women.

Background: Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria (proteinuria) are both important determinants of the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and mortality. Few studies, however, have examined the risk factor profiles based on eGFR and proteinuria among the general population.
Methods: Data of the newly developed nationwide screening program of the Specific Health Check-up and Guidance System (Tokutei-Kensin) initiated in 2008 were used in this study.

The incidence and prevalence of chronic dialysis patients in Japan is increasing linearly and is currently as high as 300 and 2300 per million population, respectively. The incidence of end-stage renal disease is closely related to that of chronic dialysis; findings which are captured in detail in the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy registry. Life expectancy of dialysis patients is poor compared to the age- and sex-matched general population, and is equivalent to that of an 80-year-old man or an 87-year-old woman, i.

Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) tests principally measure the time for a fibrin clot developed in citrated plasma after activation. For the complexity of chemical reactions, a number of preanalytical variables potentially influence the outcome of results. In the present study, we evaluated some preanalytical variables frequently encountered in clinical settings.

We experienced hospital-acquired infection in March 2008 that three nurses became infected with Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Accordingly, we performed the retrospective study to determine the prevalence of PVL-positive S. aureus in Okinawa.

To establish an alternative and more sensitive test method to detect oocyst of Cryptosporidium parvum and cyst of Giardia lamblia in clinical stool specimens, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) was evaluated. Minimum cell concentrations at which LAMP assay could detect C. parvum oocyst and G.

Background: High pulse rate is a culprit of all causes of death in the general population, but its relation to death in haemodialysis (HD) patients has not been examined in a large patient cohort.
Methods: We examined the relationship between pulse rate (beats per minute, bpm) before an HD session and survival based on the nationwide HD registry of the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy. Outcomes were confirmed using the coded ID numbers of both 2005 and 2006 registries.

The prevalence of treated patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has been increasing steadily in Japan. High ESRD prevalence could be explained by multiple factors such as better survival on dialysis therapy, luxury acceptance due to insurance system to cover dialysis therapy, and 'truly' high incidence and prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The growing elderly population may also contribute to this trend.

It is well known that most exclusive-typed immunoassay systems are highly precise but are poor in compatibility of their determinations. Thus, it is difficult to compare the determinations among different systems, posing problems when a patient is transferred to different hospitals or when a laboratory intends to change the system currently used. In the study, we tried to approach how to assure inter-immunoassay compatibility among four different systems through determination of the exchanged calibrators.

The publications in 1990s have indicated decreased recovery rates of obligate anaerobes from blood cultures and have questioned the need for routine anaerobic blood culture bottles. In this study, we compared positivities of the paired aerobic and anaerobic bottles and rapidity to detect positive cultures by two automated blood culture systems, BACTEC 9120 and BacT/ALERT 3D. Of 401 positive readings by BACTEC 9120, 338(84.

Background: Guidelines for treatment of hypertension are not available for chronic hemodialysis (HD) population, despite the high mortality rate due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Survival is much better among hypertensive patients than normal to hypotensive patients. Target levels of blood pressure and the class of antihypertensive drugs have not been examined in prospective studies.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is considered a risk factor for both end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and cardiovascular disease. Early detection and treatment of CKD is likely to be the key factor to prevent them. According to the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy, the prevalence of treated ESRD has increased to >2,000 per million population.

Background: In Japan, there is a geographic difference in the prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Few epidemiologic studies, however, have compared the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among different geographic areas. Other than genetic factors, socioeconomic conditions and lifestyle are targets for modification.

Concept of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is widely accepted, since it is a risk factor for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and cardiovascular disease. In Japan, the prevalence of ESRD is increasing and is currently more than 2,000 per million populations. More than 40% of incident ESRD is due to diabetes mellitus.
