Article Synopsis
  • Utilization of ventricular assist devices (VAD) for end-stage heart failure is advanced, but there's a need for evidence-based psychosocial support interventions post-implantation.
  • A study in Germany involved 140 patients, randomly assigned to an intervention or control group, to evaluate the impact of a new VAD support curriculum on various health outcomes.
  • Results indicated that while primary health complications were similar across both groups, the intervention significantly reduced depression in patients and showed improvements in anxiety, quality of life, social support, and self-management for those receiving the VAD intervention.

Prostate adenocarcinoma metastasis to brain has been reported to occur only up to 0.6% of patients and these are mostly diagnosed in autopsy series. In the setting of biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer, a suspected PSMA-avid (prostate-specific membrane antigen) lesion in the brain is still strongly suggestive of an intracranial metastasis of prostate cancer.

This state-of-the-art review aimed to synthesize evidence from various sex-stratified studies on aortic stenosis (AS), focusing on the difference in clinical presentation, anatomical characteristics, pathophysiology, and management of AS. In comparison to men, women with AS are present at later stages, are older, more symptomatic, frailer, and exhibit higher operative risk [Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) score]. Women tend to have smaller aortic valve (AV) areas and left ventricular (LV) outflow tract, leading to lower stroke volumes (SVs) than men and have a higher prevalence of paradoxical, low-flow, low-gradient AS.

The fouling resistance of zwitterionic coatings is conventionally explained by the strong hydrophilicity of such polymers. Here, the biocompatibility of a set of systematically varied amphiphilic, zwitterionic copolymers is investigated. Photocrosslinkable, amphiphilic copolymers containing hydrophilic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SPe) and butyl methacrylate (BMA) were systematically synthesized in different ratios (50:50, 70:30, and 90:10) with a fixed content of photo-crosslinker by free radical copolymerization.

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy-related cadherin variants affect desmosomal binding kinetics.

J Mol Cell Cardiol

October 2024

Department of Physics, Experimental Biophysics and Applied Nanoscience, Bielefeld University, Universitätsstraße 25, Bielefeld, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Mutations in the genes for Dsg2 and Dsc2 are linked to arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a serious heart condition, and the study investigates how different variants of these proteins behave.
  • Through advanced techniques, the research reveals that while mutations don’t change the binding structure of these proteins, they affect how quickly they attach and detach from each other, potentially contributing to the development of ARVC by altering cell adhesion dynamics.

Article Synopsis
  • Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare genetic condition that causes skin lesions, vision loss, and early atherosclerosis, leading to peripheral artery disease (PAD) with varying severity among individuals.
  • A study assessed the lipid profiles of 52 PXE patients and found a significant link between elevated Lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) levels and PAD severity, while other lipid fractions showed no significant impact.
  • The findings suggest that measuring Lp(a) levels early in PXE could help identify patients at higher risk for rapid disease progression and possibly guide interventions like increased exercise training.

The incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is significantly higher in patients with pacemakers than in the general population, which could be due to patient characteristics and the diagnostic tool of the pacemaker in detecting atrial high-rate episodes and subclinical AF, but also to the pacemaker itself providing AF-promoting conditions. It is well known that high ventricular pacemaker burden increases the likelihood of AF occurrence. However, the sites of atrial and ventricular pacing may also influence the risk for AF.
