Background: Data on the epidemiological burden of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) in Switzerland is unavailable. Knowledge gaps remain on trends in PE-related comorbidities, PE severity, and length of in-hospital stay (LOS) at a nationwide level.

Methods: We used nationwide, patient-level data including all patients aged 15 years or older hospitalized for PE in Switzerland from 2003 to 2022, amounting to N=180,600.

Background: The Teddybear Hospital (TH) Project is an effort to increase children's knowledge and decrease their anxiety. It is also intended to improve medical students' pediatric communication skills. This study evaluated the educational effects on participating preschool children and medical students.

Recurrent Venous Thromboembolism in Patients on Anticoagulation: An Update Based on the Revised AWMF S2k Guideline.

In the recently updated German S2k Guideline "Diagnostics and Therapy of Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism," a new chapter was incorporated about recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients on anticoagulation treatment. Despite the high efficacy of anticoagulation in most patients, approximately 2% experience a recurrent VTE event while receiving anticoagulant drugs. The proper diagnosis of the recurrent VTE is important and possible only with the knowledge of localization and thrombus burden of the primary VTE event.

Cancer-Associated Venous Thromboembolism-Diagnostic and Therapeutic Considerations: An Update Based on the Revised AWMF S2k Guideline.

Patients with cancer are prone to develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) with negative impact on quality of life, morbidity, and mortality. Treatment of established VTE is often complex in patients with cancer. Treatment of cancer-associated VTE (CAT) basically comprises initial and maintenance treatment, for 3 to 6 months, secondary preventions, and treatment in special situations.

Investigation of superspreading COVID-19 outbreak events in meat and poultry processing plants in Germany: A cross-sectional study.

Since May 2020, several COVID-19 outbreaks have occurred in the German meat industry despite various protective measures, and temperature and ventilation conditions were considered as possible high-risk factors. This cross-sectional study examined meat and poultry plants to assess possible risk factors. Companies completed a self-administered questionnaire on the work environment and protective measures taken to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The International/Canadian Hereditary Angioedema Guideline.

This is an update to the 2014 Canadian Hereditary Angioedema Guideline with an expanded scope to include the management of hereditary angioedema (HAE) patients worldwide. It is a collaboration of Canadian and international HAE experts and patient groups led by the Canadian Hereditary Angioedema Network. The objective of this guideline is to provide evidence-based recommendations, using the GRADE system, for the management of patients with HAE.

IL-17A/F in Leishmania major-resistant C57BL/6 mice.

Proinflammatory IL-17 plays an important role in various diseases and defence against extracellular microorganisms. Healing of leishmaniasis is promoted by Th1/Tc1 cells, whereas Th2/Treg are associated with worsened disease outcome. In addition, high expression of IL-17A in Leishmania-susceptible BALB/c and artificial overexpression of IL-17A in T cells in resistant C57BL/6 mice worsened disease outcome.

Pulmonary embolism.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is caused by emboli, which have originated from venous thrombi, travelling to and occluding the arteries of the lung. PE is the most dangerous form of venous thromboembolism, and undiagnosed or untreated PE can be fatal. Acute PE is associated with right ventricular dysfunction, which can lead to arrhythmia, haemodynamic collapse and shock.

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension from the perspective of patients with pulmonary embolism.

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare but feared long-term complication of acute pulmonary embolism (PE), although CTEPH may occur in patients with no history of symptomatic venous thromboembolism. It represents the most severe presentation of the so-called 'post-PE syndrome', a phenomenon of permanent functional limitations after PE caused by deconditioning after PE or ventilatory or circulatory impairment as a result of unresolved pulmonary artery thrombi. Because the post-PE syndrome may occur in up to 50% of PE survivors, and CTEPH tends to have an insidious and non-specific clinical presentation, CTEPH is often not diagnosed or diagnosed after a very long delay.

Background: Dendritic cells (DC) play an important role in the induction of immune responses. Patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) suffer from chronic inflammation, leading to a secondary, uremic immunodeficiency associated with alterations in monocyte subpopulations with increased proinflammatory capacities.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine, under isolated conditions, whether alterations in monocyte subpopulations may affect in vitro maturation of dendritic cells (DC) in patients with ESRD, thus allowing us to draw conclusions for the situation in vivo.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a disease which is associated with random and often unpredictable attacks of painful swelling typically affecting the extremities, bowel mucosa, genitals, face and upper airway. Attacks are associated with significant functional impairment, decreased Health Related Quality of Life, and mortality in the case of laryngeal attacks. Caring for patients with HAE can be challenging due to the complexity of this disease.
