Obesity is one of the major health problems of the world, and one of the most common surgical treatments is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. This can however lead to problems with postprandial hypoglycemia, but sometimes, the meal test does not render any signs of hypoglycemia. Here, 3 cases are presented with postprandial normoglycemic hypokalemia.

Unlabelled: That certain psychological factors are negatively associated with function in patients with chronic pain is well established. However, few studies have evaluated these factors in individuals with chronic pain from the general population. The aims of this study were to: 1) evaluate the unique associations between catastrophizing and perceived solicitous responses and psychological function, physical function, and insomnia severity in individuals with neuropathic pain, osteoarthritis, or spinal pain in the general population; and 2) determine if diagnosis moderates the associations found.

[2] Department of Physiological Sciences II, School of Medicine, University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. [3] Institucio Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

Metastasis is responsible for most cancer-related deaths, and, among common tumor types, melanoma is one with great potential to metastasize. Here we study the contribution of epigenetic changes to the dissemination process by analyzing the changes that occur at the DNA methylation level between primary cancer cells and metastases. We found a hypomethylation event that reactivates a cryptic transcript of the Rab GTPase activating protein TBC1D16 (TBC1D16-47 kDa; referred to hereafter as TBC1D16-47KD) to be a characteristic feature of the metastatic cascade.

Matrix metalloproteinases -8 and -9 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 in burn patients. A prospective observational study.

PLoS One

April 2016

Department of Surgical Sciences, Plastic Surgery, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden; Burn Center, Department of Plastic- and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital of Uppsala, Uppsala, Sweden.

Introduction: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) -8 and -9 are released from neutrophils in acute inflammation and may contribute to permeability changes in burn injury. In retrospective studies on sepsis, levels of MMP-8, MMP-9, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) differed from those of healthy controls, and TIMP-1 showed an association with outcome. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between these proteins and disease severity and outcome in burn patients.

Background/objectives: The evidence regarding fatty acids and breast cancer risk is inconclusive. Adipose tissue fatty acids can be used as biomarkers of fatty acid intake and of endogenous fatty acid exposure. Fatty acids in adipose tissue are correlated owing to common dietary sources and shared metabolic pathways, which group fatty acids into naturally occurring patterns.

Role of exosomes in myocardial remodeling.

Circ Res

January 2014

From the Department of Cardiology, Heart Centre, and Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine, Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden (A.W.); and Department of Medical Sciences, Clinical Chemistry, University Hospital of Uppsala, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden (G.R.).

Exosomes are nanovesicles released from cells through exocytosis and are known to be mediators of proximal as well as distant cell-to-cell signaling. They are surrounded by a classical bilayered membrane with an exceptionally high cholesterol/phospholipid ratio. Exosomes were first described in 1977, then named prostasomes, and in 1987 the name exosome was coined.
