Elastic hysteresis in human eyes is an age-dependent value.

Clin Exp Ophthalmol

April 2013

The Department of Ophthalmology, Institute of Clinical Medicine, University Hospital of Tsukuba, Ibaraki, JSOL Co., Ltd, Tokyo, Japan.

Background: The elastic hysteresis phenomenon is observed when cyclic loading is applied to a viscoelastic system. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate elastic hysteresis in living human eyes against an external force.

Design: Prospective case series.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of prognostic factors related to patient selection on survival outcomes. Survival outcomes were retrospectively analysed in a consecutive series of 67 newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients who had received either conventional fractionated photon radiotherapy (CRT) or high-dose particle radiotherapy (HDT). In the CRT protocol, a total dose of 60.

Background: Although there have been reports dealing with ventricular diverticulum (VD) analyzed by cisternography and computed tomography (CT), those focusing on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or neuroendoscopic findings are rare.

Case Report: We present a case of noncommunicating hydrocephalus caused by aqueductal stenosis with cystic lesion located in supracerebellar region. Third ventriculostomy was performed on this case.

Primary gastric lymphoma usually originates from B cells of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) infected with Helicobacter pylori. When T-cell lymphomas develop in the stomach, they usually occur in association with infection by human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 and gastric involvement of adult T-cell leukemia. Reported herein is a unique and informative case of gastric peripheral T-cell lymphoma with a cytotoxic phenotype that histologically mimicked, and had to be carefully distinguished from, MALT-type B-cell lymphoma.

Three-dimensional fast field echo MR myelography using water excitation.

Comput Med Imaging Graph

September 2004

Department of Radiology, University Hospital of Tsukuba, 2-1-1, Amakubo, Tsukuba-shi, Ibaraki 305-8576, Japan.

The purpose of this study is to determine if 3D FFE MRM using WE provides better image quality in comparison with that using SPIR. Twenty subjects were referred for the MRM images using SPIR, and WE with different TR. SNR and CNR were measured in the ganglions and adjacent tissues, in addition, the uniformity of the fat tissues was scored on a three-point scale by two radiologists with consensus.

We examined the RDH5 gene for mutations in two unrelated Japanese families with fundus albipunctatus. Each proband with fundus albipunctatus in two families (family A's case was atypical with sectorial retinitis pigmentosa, while family B's case was typical), and 2 obligate carriers underwent molecular analysis of their RDH5 gene. DNA was amplified for all coding exons of the RDH5 gene with established primer pairs, and sequenced directly.

We examined the XLRS1 gene for mutations in 6 Japanese patients with X-linked juvenile retinoschisis from a total of three families (5 males and 1 female), and from 3 obligate carrier females. DNA was amplified for all six coding exons of the XLRS1 gene with established primer pairs, and was sequenced directly. Each family had a different mutation, Trp96stop, 522+1g-->a, and Lys167Asn in the XLRS1 gene.

Purpose: To evaluate the changes in aqueous flare in psoriasis patients and to identify the factors that influence the level of aqueous flare.

Methods: We examined the 68 eyes of 34 psoriasis patients and the 68 eyes of 34 healthy subjects with a laser flare-cell meter. Complete dermatologic and ophthalmic examinations were performed on the psoriasis patients.

We evaluated aqueous humor protein concentration in psoriasis using a laser flare-cell meter, which can quantify aqueous flare precisely and objectively. Psoriatic severity was evaluated on the basis of psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) score. Aqueous flare was measured in 40 eyes of 20 psoriasis patients (sixteen psoriasis vulgaris, three guttate psoriasis, and one psoriatic arthritis) and 28 eyes of 14 normal controls.

Background: In a previous paper, we reported that retinal blood flow (RBF) ceased immediately after injection of 1 nmol endothelin-1 (ET-1) and no recovery of RBF was detected for at least 50 min. In this study, we confirmed the same duration of RBF cessation and measured choroidal blood flow (CBF) for 180 min.

Methods: We measured CBF in a rabbit model of transient complete obstruction of retinal vessels induced by intravitreal injection of a high dose of ET-1, using the hydrogen clearance method.

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is an endothelium-derived potent vasoconstrictor peptide which is synthesized in retinal vessels. In order to investigate its effect on retinal blood vessels, we injected ET-1 intravitreally (10(-12), 3 x 10(-12), 10(-11), 3 x 10(-11), 10(-10) mole) and examined the change in diameters of retinal arteries in rabbits by fundus photography. After injection of a high dose (10(-10) mole) of ET-1, fluorescein angiography was used to investigate whether complete occlusions of retinal blood vessels occurred or not.

Single photon emission computed tomography with N-isopropyl-p-[I-123]iodoamphetamine was performed in 13 cases of craniosynostosis before and after surgery. Of 13 cases, 8 cases (62%) showed focal low perfusion area on preoperative study. Four of seven cases (57%) with brachycephaly showed low perfusion areas in either of frontal lobes, occipital lobes, and cerebellum.

Vitronectin is one of the major cell-adhesive glycoproteins in mammalian plasma. We investigated the effect of topically applied vitronectin on the healing of rabbit corneal epithelial damage. Vitronectin was purified from rabbit serum by heparin-Sepharose affinity chromatography and autoclaved at 121 degrees C for 20 min after adjusting the concentration to 0.
