Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to determine if severe traumatic rhabdomyolysis (with CK levels > 5000 U/L) affects the likelihood of death within 30 days for trauma patients, utilizing a causal inference approach in a multicenter cohort in France.
  • - An analysis of 8592 patients revealed that 18% had severe RM, primarily affecting young males with blunt trauma, yet it did not significantly impact overall 30-day mortality rates despite associated complications.
  • - While patients with severe RM had higher rates of multiorgan failure and septic shock during ICU stays, this risk was not a significant predictor of death when adjusted for confounding factors.

Malignant salivary gland tumors of the tongue: A multicenter REFCOR study.

Int J Cancer

January 2025

Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Department, University Cancer Institute Toulouse and Toulouse University Hospital, Larrey Hospital, Toulouse, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Salivary carcinomas of minor salivary glands, particularly in the tongue, are rare tumors that may require surgery and/or (chemo-)radiotherapy for treatment.
  • A study involving 103 patients diagnosed between 2009 and 2018 found that the most common types were adenoid cystic and mucoepidermoid carcinomas, with surgery being the primary treatment for most cases.
  • Results indicated that 5-year overall survival was 84.7%, while event-free survival was lower at 38.6%; nonsurgical treatment, alcohol use, and tumor location negatively impacted event-free survival, while nodal positivity was a key factor affecting overall survival.

Early- and life-long intake of dietary advanced glycation end-products (dAGEs) leads to transient tissue accumulation, increased gut sensitivity to inflammation, and slight changes in gut microbial diversity, without causing overt disease.

U1167-RID-AGE-Facteurs de Risque et Déterminants Moléculaires des Maladies Liées au Vieillissement, Institut Pasteur de Lille, University Lille, Inserm, CHU Lille, F-59000 Lille, France. Electronic address:

Dietary advanced glycation end-products (dAGEs) accumulate in organs and are thought to initiate chronic low-grade inflammation (CLGI), induce glycoxidative stress, drive immunosenescence, and influence gut microbiota. Part of the toxicological interest in glycation products such as dietary carboxymethyl-lysine (dCML) relies on their interaction with receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE). It remains uncertain whether early or lifelong exposure to dAGEs contributes physiological changes and whether such effects are reversible or permanent.

Background: Uncontrolled gout can cause articular impairment but is also associated with a global and cardiovascular excess mortality, especially in dialysis population. Data documented within existing research is not conclusive regarding gout flares evolution during hemodialysis and their control by urate lowering therapy (ULT). Without clear guidelines concerning hemodialysis patients management with chronic gout, this study proposes to investigate whether gout flare incidence reduction could be observed on this population treated by urate lowering therapy versus patients without treatment.

In patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (AD) showing an inadequate response to dupilumab 300mg/2weeks, few real-life studies reported the response to alternative regimen maintaining dupilumab. To assess and analyze the response to an increased dose of dupilumab or its combination with cyclosporin A (CsA), methotrexate (MTX), or itraconazole (ITRA), all adult AD patients from 7 French University Hospitals were retrospectively included if they achieved an inadequate response to dupilumab 300mg/2weeks and were subsequently treated with an increased dose of dupilumab (300mg every 7 or 10 days), or a combination of dupilumab 300mg/2weeks with CsA, MTX or ITRA. The response after 3 months, along with epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic baseline characteristics, were collected.

Article Synopsis
  • Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) can complicate conditions like heart failure and aortic stenosis (AS), especially in older adults, but its prevalence among AS patients undergoing transaortic valve implantation (TAVI) is not well-studied.
  • A study screening 100 TAVI patients showed an ATTR-CM prevalence of 7%, predominantly in older males, with specific electrocardiographic and structural heart changes noted in those positive for ATTR-CM.
  • One-year survival rates for patients with positive ATTR-CM tests were similar to those with isolated AS, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and further research on long-term outcomes in ATTR-CM patients post-TAVI.

Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma (PCNSL) is an aggressive brain tumour with a median survival rarely exceeding 3 months without treatment when seen in association with advanced HIV. High dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) in association with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) is the recommended chemotherapy. However, HD-MTX may be not feasible due to poor performance status and concerns about toxicity.

Background: Acute and complete unilateral vestibular deafferentation induces a significant change in ipsilateral vestibuloocular reflex gain, making the patient unable to stabilize gaze during active or passive head movements. This inability creates the illusion that the visual environment is moving, resulting in persistent visual discomfort during rapid angular or linear acceleration of the head. This is known as oscillopsia.
