Purpose: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) are common and commonly coexisting cardiovascular diseases in hospitalized patients. We report the absolute number and interrelation between AF and HF, assess the daily burden of both diseases on the healthcare system, and describe the medical treatment in a real-world, nationwide conducted snapshot survey.

Methods: A questionnaire was equally distributed to various healthcare institutions.

Article Synopsis
  • Cutaneous immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are the most common side effects experienced by cancer patients undergoing treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), with a wide variety of skin toxicities identified.
  • A study of 762 patients revealed 993 instances of cutaneous toxicities, with psoriasis and pruritus being the most prevalent reactions.
  • The findings indicate that the type of ICI therapy and the underlying cancer can significantly influence the occurrence and type of skin toxicities, highlighting the need for tailored follow-up plans for affected patients.

Objective: The role of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) in tumor development, progression and metastasis is studied for more than half a century and is attracting more attention during the last years. In this narrative review, we aim to a chronological and methodological presentation of the most interesting and pioneering studies on the subject.

Methods: The complexity of the autonomic nervous system's interaction with the immune system, its direct and indirect effects on tumors and their surrounding tissues, plus the diversity and heterogeneity in the design and methodology of the studies, provide hard-to-interpret data and, at times, controversial findings.

Background: Transcutaneous cardiac pacing (TCP) is deeply entwined with the problem of assessing ventricular capture on the electrocardiogram (ECG). We sought clarification of ventricular capture during TCP.

Methods: We studied one hundred and ten patients (75 ± 12 years) with bradycardia who underwent pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implantation.

The cellular pathway of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and its receptor (FSHR) is typically involved in reproduction in mammals. In humans, the FSHR is normally found in cells of the testis and the ovary, while it is scarcely expressed in other normal tissues. The expression of FSH/FSHR is studied in prostate, thyroid, and ovarian cancer tissues.

A best evidence topic in cardiac surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was whether transcatheter aortic valve-in-valve replacement (viv-TAVR) or redo aortic valve replacement (rAVR) is the best strategy in a patient with a degenerative bioprosthetic aortic valve. Altogether, 162 papers were found using the reported search, of which 12 represented the best evidence to answer the question.

A best evidence topic in cardiac surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was whether it is best in a patient with posterior leaflet prolapse to resect tissue from the posterior leaflet or to preserve the leaflet tissue by only adding neochordal reconstruction. Altogether, 279 papers were found using the reported search, of which 16 represented the best evidence to answer the clinical question.

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) is a left-to-right shunt where one or more, but not all, pulmonary veins drain into a systemic vein or the right atrium. A best evidence topic in cardiac surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was whether it is best to repair or replace the aortic valve with a bioprosthesis in young patients with severe aortic regurgitation as the patients do not like to take warfarin for the rest of life. Altogether 74 papers were found using the reported search, of which 10 represented the best evidence to answer the clinical question.

Over 100 years ago, Dr Hermann Kümmell described a rare clinical entity in which patients, after a trivial trauma and an asymptomatic period, developed a progressive vertebral body collapse and a painful kyphosis. We present the case of a 31years old heavy labourer, fitting Kümmell's criteria. The patient referred to us in an incapacitated state, due to persistent back pain.
