Background: Maintaining the patient awake and not intubated during the venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) reduces the risk of ventilation-induced lung injury in patients with ARDS. Currently, there is a lack of data on outcomes and complications associated with the awake ECMO approach.
Objectives: To evaluate outcomes and the occurrence of complications of awake ECMO approach guided by local safety protocol comprising ultrasound-guided cannulation, argatroban-based anticoagulation, respiratory support, and routine sedation targeted to reduce respiratory effort and keeping nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1.

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a significant problem following paediatric surgery, and volatile anaesthetics are an important cause of this phenomenon. BIS-guided anaesthesia, by reducing the consumption of anaesthetics, leads to a decrease in PONV in adult patients.
Study Objective: Evaluate the role of BIS-guided anaesthesia in reducing the incidence of paediatric PONV.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) as a possible cause of chronic cough is known for decades. However, more than 75% of patients with extraoesophageal symptoms do not suffer from typical symptoms of GERD like pyrosis and regurgitations and have negative upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. For such a condition term laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) was introduced and is used for more than two decades.

BACKGROUND Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common cause of organ failure in patients after major trauma and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Early identification of patients at risk enables the implementation of a bundle of supportive care, which reduces the incidence of AKI. The primary objective of our study was to investigate whether the levels of biomarkers on admission predicted the onset of early AKI in patients with serious injuries.

Patients affected by multiple myeloma (MM) have an increased risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and subsequent coronavirus (20)19 disease (COVID-19)-related death. The changing epidemiological and therapeutic scenarios suggest that there has been an improvement in severity and survival of COVID-19 during the different waves of the pandemic in the general population, but this has not been investigated yet in MM patients. Here we analyzed a large cohort of 1221 patients with MM and confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection observed between February 2020, and August 2022, in the EPICOVIDEHA registry from 132 centers around the world.

Objective: Emergence delirium (ED) is a postoperative complication in pediatric anesthesia characterized by a perception and psychomotor disorder, with a negative impact on postoperative recovery. As the use of inhalation anesthesia is associated with a higher incidence of ED, we investigated whether titrating the depth of general anesthesia with BIS monitor can reduce the incidence of ED.
Design: Randomized, prospective, and double-blind.

Objectives: Elderly patients with hematologic malignancies face the highest risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes. The infection's impact on different age groups remains unstudied in detail.
Methods: We analyzed elderly patients (age groups: 65-70, 71-75, 76-80, and >80 years old) with hematologic malignancies included in the EPICOVIDEHA registry between January 2020 and July 2022.

This article focuses on the development of algorithms for a smart neurorehabilitation system, whose core is made up of artificial neural networks. The authors of the article have proposed a completely unique transfer of ACE-R results to the CHC model. This unique approach allows for the saturation of the CHC model domains according to modified ACE-R factor analysis.

Considering the well documented, almost ubiquitous nature of microplastics in different environments, the exposure of pregnant women to microplastics may pose risks to the unborn children. The study focused on investigating the presence of microplastics in amniotic fluid and placenta, and brings the first evidence of the simultaneous presence of microplastics and additives in both human amniotic fluid and placentas. In total, 20 samples of amniotic fluid and placenta from 10 patients were analyzed for the presence of microplastics and plastic additives by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy - attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) after alkaline digestion with KOH.

: The consequences of stroke have a significant impact on self-sufficiency and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Virtual reality (VR)-based rehabilitation has the potential to impact these modalities, but information on timing, volume, and intensity is not yet available. The aim of this randomized controlled trial (1:1) was to evaluate the impact of conventional rehabilitation combined with VR on self-care and domains of HRQoL in patients ≤6 months post-stroke.

Postdischarge nausea and vomiting (PDNV) cause substantial pediatric morbidity with potentially serious postoperative complications. However, few studies have addressed PDNV prevention and treatment in pediatric patients. Here we searched the literature and processed it in a narrative review describing PDNV incidence, risk factors, and management in pediatric patients.

The multiple forms of pulmonary aspergillosis caused by Aspergillus species are the most common respiratory mycoses. Although invasive, the analysis of diagnostic biomarkers in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) is a clinical standard for diagnosing these conditions. The BALF samples from 22 patients with proven or probable aspergillosis were assayed for human pentraxin 3 (Ptx3), fungal ferricrocin (Fc), and triacetylfusarinine C (TafC) in a retrospective study.

Background: To investigate mental health, sleep, and addiction features of young otolaryngologists (YO) according to the mobilization in COVID-19 units at the end of the third European wave of infections.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was sent to 220 YO of 6 European University hospitals. The following outcomes were evaluated: postgraduate year; age; management of COVID-19 patients; workload; nights on call; stress; Beck depression inventory; Insomnia severity index; sleep and mental health status evolutions throughout pandemic; consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs before and during pandemic.

Background: Although fall prevention in patients after stroke is crucial, the clinical validity of fall risk assessment tools is underresearched in this population. The study aim was to determine the cut-off scores and clinical validity of the Sensory Organization Test (SOT), the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and the Fall Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) in patients after stroke.
Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, we analyzed data for patients admitted to a rehabilitation unit after stroke from 2018 through 2021.

Ensuring the regularity and correctness of rehabilitation exercises in the home environment is a prerequisite for successful treatment. This clinical study compares balance therapy in the home environment on a conventional balance mat and an instrumented wobble board, with biofeedback supported by a rehabilitation scheme realized as web-based software that controls the course of rehabilitation remotely. The study included 55 patients with knee injuries.
