Background: COVID-19 has put a huge strain on the healthcare systems worldwide, requiring unprecedented intensive care resources. There is still an unmet clinical need for easily available biomarkers capable of predicting the risk for severe disease. The main goal of this prospective multicenter study was to identify biomarkers that could predict ICU admission and in-hospital mortality.

Oncocytic adenocarcinoma (OC) of the salivary glands is a rare and controversial entity. It was recently reclassified as "salivary carcinoma NOS and emerging entities" in the 2022 WHO classification of head and neck tumors. The lack of specific molecular alterations and its potential affiliation with other salivary gland carcinomas, such as the oncocytic mucoepidermoid carcinomas (OMEC) or the oncocytic subtype of salivary duct carcinomas (OSDC) justified this reclassification.

Background: Shamanism is a spiritual tradition in which trance practitioners deliberately modify their state of consciousness to seemingly interact with an invisible world to resolve their community members' problems. This review aims to provide a multidisciplinary overview of scientific research on shamanic trance.
Methods: The search was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar databases.

Experimental and clinical studies of consciousness identify brain states (i.e. quasi-stable functional cerebral organization) in a non-systematic manner and largely independent of the research into brain state modulation.

Background: In mesothelioma (MPM), clinical evidence indicates that the absolute eosinophil count negatively correlates with overall survival and response to standard chemotherapy. Since eosinophils poorly infiltrate MPM tumours, we hypothesised that endocrine rather than paracrine pathways mediate the therapeutic response. We thus studied the effect of eosinophil-associated factors on response to chemotherapy in mesothelioma.

Despite the growing evidence supporting the existence of CNS involvement in acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (CNS-GvHD), the characteristics and course of the disease are still largely unknown. In this multicenter retrospective study, we analyzed the clinical, biological, radiological, and histopathological characteristics, as well as the clinical course of 66 patients diagnosed with possible CNS-GvHD (pCNS-GvHD), selected by predetermined diagnostic criteria. Results were then contrasted depending on whether pCNS-GvHD occurred before or after day 100 following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Objective: This longitudinal pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, safety and potential benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma injections into the lumbar intervertebral discs in patients with low back pain and degenerative intervertebral monodiscopathy, assessing potential efficacy on disability.
Design: Longitudinal pilot study.
Methods: Six participants with chronic low back pain and lumbar degenerative intervertebral disc (monodiscopathy) disease underwent 1 Platelet-Rich Plasma injection, with a 1-year follow-up.

Background: Convalescent plasma (CP) reduced the mortality in COVID-19 induced ARDS (C-ARDS) patients treated in the CONFIDENT trial. As patients are immunologically heterogeneous, we hypothesized that clusters may differ in their treatment responses to CP.
Methods: We measured 20 cytokines, chemokines and cell adhesion markers using a multiplex technique at the time of inclusion in the CONFIDENT trial in patients of centers having accepted to participate in this secondary study.

Background: Mucociliary clearance (MCC) impairment can be due to mucus abnormalities or to a ciliary dysfunction, which can be innate, or secondary to infection and/or inflammation. In cystic fibrosis (CF), it is well documented that MCC is impaired due to mucus abnormalities, but little is known concerning ciliary beating. This study aimed to confirm that ciliary dyskinesia is present in CF, and if this might be innate or secondary to the chronic infection and/or inflammation.

The diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is significant at any stage, however an early diagnosis in a presymptomatic or very early phase of DMD, offers unique opportunities and challenges for families and health care providers. Currently, there is limited evidence as to the optimal models of care during this stage of the condition..

Objective: The objective of this study was to characterize exclusive costal lesions detected by 68 Gallium-labelled prostate-specific membrane antigen ([ 68 Ga]Ga-PSMA-11) PET/computed tomography (CT) at initial staging or biochemical recurrence (BCR) in prostate cancer (PCa) patients, and to identify clinical and/or PET/CT criteria associated with benign and malignant lesions.
Methods: We retrospectively identified 54 patients with PCa who underwent [ 68 Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT for initial staging ( N = 39) or BCR ( N = 15) and whose reports described rib lesions, at the exclusion of any other lesions, whether doubtful, suspicious, or established. Posttherapy prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were used to determine whether those lesions were benign or malignant.

Background: Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are an heterogeneous group of infiltrating lung pathologies, for which prompt diagnosis and continuous assessment are of paramount importance. While chest CT is an established diagnostic tool for ILDs, there are no formal guidelines on the follow-up regimen, leaving the frequency and modality of follow-up largely at the clinician's discretion.
Methods: The study retrospectively evaluated the indication of chest CT in a cohort of 129 ILD patients selected from the ambulatory care polyclinic at University Hospital of Liège.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare, genetic neurodegenerative disorder caused by insufficient production of survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. Diminished SMN protein levels lead to motor neuron loss, causing muscle atrophy and weakness that impairs daily functioning and reduces quality of life. SMN upregulators offer clinical improvements and increased survival in SMA patients, although significant unmet needs remain.

This study examined the effects of fumonisins (FBs) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), alone or in combination, on the productivity and health of laying hens, as well as the transfer of aflatoxins (AFs) to chicken food products. The efficacy and safety of mycotoxin detoxifiers (bentonite and fumonisin esterase) to mitigate these effects were also assessed. Laying hens (400) were divided into 20 groups and fed a control, moderate (54.

Virtual reality (VR) and hypnosis (H) are useful pain management tools, but the potential benefit of their combination (VRH) has yet to be studied. This study examines the user experience of VRH, compared to H and VR alone, using interviews following an experimental study examining the effect of the three interventions on pain perception. Following a within-subjects repeated measures experimental design, 16 participants received the three interventions during which they received painful electrical stimuli.

Background: Understanding cancer symptom cluster through network analyses is a new approach in oncology, revealing interconnected and influential relationships among reported symptoms. We aimed to assess these relationships using network analysis in posttreatment breast cancer patients, focusing on the five dimensions of cancer-related fatigue (CRF), and on other common difficulties encountered by oncological patients (i.e.
