The demographic shift towards an aging population necessitates a reevaluation of surgical interventions like coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in octogenarians. This study aims to elucidate the outcomes of CABG in octogenarians with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), a group traditionally considered at high risk for such procedures. Conducted across four academic hospitals in Germany from 2017 to 2023, this retrospective multicenter study assessed 100 patients (50 octogenarians ≥80 years and 50 non-octogenarians <80 years) with HFrEF undergoing isolated CABG.

This study assesses predictors for postoperative delirium (POD) and ICU stay durations in HFrEF patients undergoing CABG, focusing on ONCAB versus OPCAB surgical methods. In cardiac surgery, especially CABG, POD significantly impacts patient recovery and healthcare resource utilization. With varying incidences based on surgical techniques, this study provides an in-depth analysis of POD in the context of HFrEF patients, a group particularly susceptible to this complication.

Background: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-directed radioligand therapy (RLT) is a novel treatment for patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Given the mode of action, patients in an earlier disease stage, such as hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (HSPC), are also likely to benefit from [Lu]Lu-PSMA- (Lu-PSMA) or [Ac]Ac-PSMA-radioligand treatment (Ac-PSMA). In this retrospective study, we analyzed the safety and efficacy of PSMA-RLT in early-stage and hormone-sensitive metastatic prostate cancer patients.

Perinatal hypoxia-ischemia (PHI) is a major risk factor for the development of neuropsychiatric deficits later in life. We previously reported that after prolonged PHI, the dopaminergic neurons of the human neonate showed a dramatic reduction of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the substantia nigra, without important signs of neuronal degeneration despite the significant reduction in their cell size. Since microglia activation could precede neuronal death, we now investigated 2 microglia activation markers, ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1), and the phagocytosis marker Cd68.

Ultrasonography and radionuclide imaging using [Tc]Pertechnetate or radioactive iodine isotopes are essential tools used during the diagnostic workup of hyperthyroidism with or without structural alterations of the thyroid. Color duplex sonography and ultrasound elastography may add important information to find the cause of the hormone excess. During the last few years, hybrid imaging using SPECT/-(CT) or PET-based methods, such as []Iodine-PET/CT or []Iodine-PET/ultrasound have been increasingly used, playing a role in the context of localizing ectopic thyroid tissue or in multinodular goiter.
