The demographic shift towards an aging population necessitates a reevaluation of surgical interventions like coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in octogenarians. This study aims to elucidate the outcomes of CABG in octogenarians with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), a group traditionally considered at high risk for such procedures. Conducted across four academic hospitals in Germany from 2017 to 2023, this retrospective multicenter study assessed 100 patients (50 octogenarians ≥80 years and 50 non-octogenarians <80 years) with HFrEF undergoing isolated CABG.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates sex-related differences in clinical outcomes for patients with infective endocarditis (IE) who underwent cardiac surgery, using data from the CAMPAIGN registry in Germany.
  • - It was found that female patients had more comorbidities, longer postoperative recovery times, and higher early morbidity rates, yet demonstrated similar 30-day mortality rates compared to males.
  • - Despite comparable short-term mortality, mid-term survival rates were significantly lower for females, indicating that being female is an independent risk factor for worse outcomes in the long run after surgical treatment for IE.

Background: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-directed radioligand therapy (RLT) is a novel treatment for patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Given the mode of action, patients in an earlier disease stage, such as hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (HSPC), are also likely to benefit from [Lu]Lu-PSMA- (Lu-PSMA) or [Ac]Ac-PSMA-radioligand treatment (Ac-PSMA). In this retrospective study, we analyzed the safety and efficacy of PSMA-RLT in early-stage and hormone-sensitive metastatic prostate cancer patients.

Perinatal hypoxia-ischemia (PHI) is a major risk factor for the development of neuropsychiatric deficits later in life. We previously reported that after prolonged PHI, the dopaminergic neurons of the human neonate showed a dramatic reduction of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the substantia nigra, without important signs of neuronal degeneration despite the significant reduction in their cell size. Since microglia activation could precede neuronal death, we now investigated 2 microglia activation markers, ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1), and the phagocytosis marker Cd68.
