How young radiologists use contrast media and manage adverse reactions: an international survey.

Objectives: To collect real-world data about the knowledge and self-perception of young radiologists concerning the use of contrast media (CM) and the management of adverse drug reactions (ADR).

Methods: A survey (29 questions) was distributed to residents and board-certified radiologists younger than 40 years to investigate the current international situation in young radiology community regarding CM and ADRs. Descriptive statistics analysis was performed.

Does tourism affect the long term course of COVID-19 pandemic in a country of destination? Evidence from a popular Greek island in 2020 where control measures were implemented.

Greece opened its points of entry on July 1, 2020, with specific guidelines for travellers arriving by sea, air or land. The aim of this article is to examine the effect of tourism on the long term course of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic during the pre-vaccination era (June to December 2020) on the popular Greek island of Crete. To achieve this, a cross-sectional serosurvey, repeated at monthly intervals, was conducted to compare the seroprevalence in Crete with seroprevalence in the mainland of Greece.

Performance of thoracic ultrasonography compared with chest radiography for the detection of rib fractures using computed tomography as a reference standard.

Objective: Although there is growing evidence that ultrasonography is superior to X-ray for rib fractures' detection, X-ray is still indicated as the most appropriate method. This has partially been attributed to a lack of studies using an appropriate reference modality. We aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography and X-ray in the detection of rib fractures, considering CT as the reference standard.

Non-invasive maternal cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) is a promising biomarker for screening common genetic syndromes. Alterations in the expression levels of cffDNA in the maternal circulation have been demonstrated in abnormal pregnancies. However, the results are conflicting.

Prognostic and Predictive Value of Immunoscore in Stage III Colorectal Cancer: Pooled Analysis of Cases From the SCOT and IDEA-HORG Studies.

Purpose: Immunoscore (IS) is prognostic in stage III colorectal cancer (CRC) and may predict benefit of duration (6 3 months) of adjuvant infusional fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) chemotherapy. We sought to determine IS prognostic and predictive value in stage-III CRC treated with adjuvant FOLFOX or oral capecitabine and infusional oxaliplatin (CAPOX) in the SCOT and IDEA-HORG trials.

Methods: Three thousand sixty-one cases had tumor samples, of which 2,643 (1,792 CAPOX) were eligible for IS testing.

Role of source control in critically ill candidemic patients: a multicenter retrospective study.

Purpose: Candidemia is associated with high mortality especially in critically ill patients. Our aim was to identify predictors of mortality among critically ill patients with candidemia with a focus on early interventions that can improve prognosis.

A Fatal Case of Presumptive Diagnosis of Leptospirosis Involving the Central Nervous System.

Leptospirosis is a reemerging zooanthroponosis with a worldwide distribution, though it has a higher incidence in areas with tropical climate. A characteristic finding of the disease is its wide spectrum of symptoms and organ involvement, as it can appear either with very mild flu-like manifestations or with multiorgan failure, affecting the central nervous system (CNS) with a concomitant hepatorenal dysfunction (Weil's syndrome) and significant high mortality rate. We report herein a fatal case of a 25 years old female, previously healthy, with impaired neurological status.

A Model Predicting the 6-Month Disability of Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury to Assess the Quality of Care in Intensive Care Units: Results from the CREACTIVE Study.

Assessing quality of care is essential for improving the management of patients experiencing traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study aimed at devising a rigorous framework to evaluate the quality of TBI care provided by intensive care units (ICUs) and applying it to the Collaborative Research on Acute Traumatic Brain Injury in Intensive Care Medicine in Europe (CREACTIVE) consortium, which involved 83 ICUs from seven countries. The performance of the centers was assessed in terms of patients' outcomes, as measured by the 6-month Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOS-E).

Non-traumatic lower abdominal pain: ultrasonographic and clinical differential diagnosis.

Lower abdominal pain is frequently reported and has a diverse differential diagnosis. In cases with atypical presentation and nonspecific findings, further imaging evaluation is required to confirm the clinical suspicion and to distinguish between self-limiting disorders and those requiring immediate intervention. In line with European guidelines, transabdominal ultrasonography is recommended as a first-line imaging modality for clinically suspected acute appendicitis and acute diverticulitis, which respectively represent the predominant causes of right and left lower quadrant abdominal pain.

Lung- and diaphragm-protective strategies in acute respiratory failure: an in silico trial.

Background: Lung- and diaphragm-protective (LDP) ventilation may prevent diaphragm atrophy and patient self-inflicted lung injury in acute respiratory failure, but feasibility is uncertain. The objectives of this study were to estimate the proportion of patients achieving LDP targets in different modes of ventilation, and to identify predictors of need for extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCOR) to achieve LDP targets.

Methods: An in silico clinical trial was conducted using a previously published mathematical model of patient-ventilator interaction in a simulated patient population (n = 5000) with clinically relevant physiological characteristics.

Bariatric Nutritional Intervention in Obese Patients with Compensated Liver Cirrhosis: A Four-Year Prospective Study.

Background: Obesity and liver cirrhosis represent significant health challenges, often leading to various complications.

Aims: This prospective study aimed to investigate the impact of a four-year bariatric intervention, focusing on adherence to the Mediterranean Diet, on anthropometric, hematologic, and biochemical parameters in obese patients with compensated liver cirrhosis. Additionally, the study evaluated the concurrent contribution of weight loss to these health indicators.

Differences in polygenic score distributions in European ancestry populations: implications for breast cancer risk prediction.

The 313-variant polygenic risk score (PRS) provides a promising tool for breast cancer risk prediction. However, evaluation of the PRS across different European populations which could influence risk estimation has not been performed. Here, we explored the distribution of PRS across European populations using genotype data from 94,072 females without breast cancer, of European-ancestry from 21 countries participating in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC) and 225,105 female participants from the UK Biobank.

Antimicrobial Resistance of Clinical Serotypes between 2017 and 2022 in Crete, Greece.

Background: Pneumococcal disease is still considered a global problem. With the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) serotype epidemiology changed, but antimicrobial resistance persists constituting a serious problem. The current study aimed to determine the serotype distribution and the antimicrobial susceptibility of recent isolates, following implementation of the 13-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV13).

Therapeutic strategies and outcomes in neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus: an international multicentre retrospective study.

Objectives: The management of neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) poses considerable challenges due to limited clinical trials. Therapeutic decisions are customized based on suspected pathogenic mechanisms and symptoms severity. This study aimed to investigate therapeutic strategies and disease outcome for patients with NPSLE experiencing their first neuropsychiatric (NP) manifestation.

Perspectives for the Use of Umbilical Cord Blood in Transplantation and Beyond: Initiatives for an Advanced and Sustainable Public Banking Program in Greece.

The umbilical cord blood (UCB) donated in public UCB banks is a source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) alternative to bone marrow for allogeneic HSC transplantation (HSCT). However, the high rejection rate of the donated units due to the strict acceptance criteria and the wide application of the haploidentical HSCT have resulted in significant limitation of the use of UCB and difficulties in the economic sustainability of the public UCB banks. There is an ongoing effort within the UCB community to optimize the use of UCB in the field of HSCT and a parallel interest in exploring the use of UCB for applications beyond HSCT i.

Reversibility of the Enlargement of the Pulmonary Artery in COVID-19 Pneumonia as a Marker of Remission of the Disease.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia is associated with extensive pulmonary microangiopathy and the enlargement of the pulmonary artery (PA), while its progression after the remission of the disease has not been investigated yet. The aim was to assess the diametral increase in the PA in COVID-19 pneumonia, as revealed on chest computed tomography (CT), and further investigate its progression. This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, without prior history of pulmonary hypertension, who underwent CT pulmonary angiography before, during, and after the infection.

Thoracic ultrasound use in hospitalized and ambulatory adult patients: a quantitative picture.

Introduction And Objectives: Thoracic ultrasound (TUS) has been established as a powerful diagnostic and monitoring tool in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). However, studies outside the critical care setting are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the value of TUS for hospitalized or ambulatory community patients.

Developing a Radiomics Atlas Dataset of normal Abdominal and Pelvic computed Tomography (RADAPT).

Atlases of normal genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics have been published in an attempt to understand the biological phenotype in health and disease and to set the basis of comprehensive comparative omics studies. No such atlas exists for radiomics data. The purpose of this study was to systematically create a radiomics dataset of normal abdominal and pelvic radiomics that can be used for model development and validation.

Enterobacterales carrying chromosomal AmpC β-lactamases in Europe (EuESCPM): Epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance burden from a cohort of 27 hospitals, 2020-2022.

Introduction: The ESCPM group (Enterobacter species including Klebsiella aerogenes - formerly Enterobacter aerogenes, Serratia species, Citrobacter freundii complex, Providencia species and Morganella morganii) has not yet been incorporated into systematic surveillance programs.

Methods: We conducted a multicentre retrospective observational study analysing all ESCPM strains isolated from blood cultures in 27 European hospitals over a 3-year period (2020-2022). Diagnostic approach, epidemiology, and antimicrobial susceptibility were investigated.
