Renal replacement therapies (RRT) are essential to support critically ill patients with severe acute kidney injury (AKI), providing control of solutes, fluid balance and acid-base status. To maintain the patency of the extracorporeal circuit, minimizing downtime periods and blood losses due to filter clotting, an effective anticoagulation strategy is required.Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) has been introduced in clinical practice for continuous RRT (CRRT) in the early 1990s and has had a progressively wider acceptance in parallel to the development of simplified systems and safe protocols.

June 2023

Advanced Medical and Surgical Sciences Department, University of Campania, L. Vanvitelli, 81100 Naples, Italy.

This narrative review aims to shed light on the role of gender differences, on the biological and molecular functions in the main pathological mechanisms that recognize the role of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is widespread worldwide, but it is still very controversial whether the amount of vitamin D taken daily is actually the only problem related to its biological functions. Currently, the plasma concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D represents the only indicator of the circulating blood quota.

Cerebral Sinus Vein Thrombosis and Gender: A Not Entirely Casual Relationship.

Biomedicines

April 2023

Advanced Medical and Surgical Sciences Department, University of Campania, L. Vanvitelli, 81100 Naples, Italy.

Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis (CSVT) is a relatively rare acute disorder of cerebral circulation, but it can potentially be associated with serious sequelae and a poor prognosis. The neurological manifestations associated with it are often not adequately taken into consideration given the extreme variability and nuances of its clinical presentation and given the need for radiological methods suitable for this type of diagnosis. CSVT is usually more common in women, but so far there are little data available in the literature on sex-specific characteristics regarding this pathology.

Article Synopsis
  • Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer, and this study explores targeting the interaction between mitochondria and lysosomes as a new treatment method using patient-derived organoids.
  • Researchers found that the overexpression of the Purinergic receptor 4 (P2XR4) in ccRCC affects mitochondrial activity, leading to increased cellular stress and eventual cell death, which highlights P2XR4 as a potential therapeutic target.
  • Inhibiting P2XR4 showed promising results in reducing tumor size and increasing sensitivity in patient-derived organoids and xenograft models, suggesting that targeting this receptor may improve treatment outcomes for patients with ccRCC.
