Occupational lung/thoracic diseases are a major global public health issue. They comprise a diverse spectrum of health conditions with complex pathology, most of which arise following chronic heavy workplace exposures to various mineral dusts, metal fumes, or following inhaled organic particulate reactions. Many occupational lung diseases could become irreversible; thus accurate diagnosis is mandatory to minimize dust exposure and consequently reduce damage to the respiratory system.

Article Synopsis
  • The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) shows promise in preventing cognitive decline and influencing levels of specific lipid molecules (endocannabinoids and N-acylethanolamines) linked to brain health and neurological disorders.
  • A study with 102 participants investigated the relationship between these lipid molecules, dietary changes, and cognitive performance over three years, considering sex and genetic factors (APOE genotype).
  • Results indicated that while baseline cognitive abilities were slightly better in men, the MedDiet led to modest improvements in memory and global cognition for all participants after three years.

Atopic dermatitis is a cutaneous inflammatory disease characterized by intense pruritus, which is often underestimated despite its direct impact on patients' health-related quality of life and the high burden it poses. The authors' goal was to design a qualitative tool to guide patients and healthcare professionals in their assessment and interpretation of pruritus intensity using a numerical rating scale. The draft of this tool, henceforth "guideline", was developed based on a systematic literature review and focus groups comprising patients and a scientific committee.

Cancer homeostasis depends on a balance between activated oncogenic pathways driving tumorigenesis and engagement of stress response programs that counteract the inherent toxicity of such aberrant signaling. Although inhibition of oncogenic signaling pathways has been explored extensively, there is increasing evidence that overactivation of the same pathways can also disrupt cancer homeostasis and cause lethality. We show here that inhibition of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) hyperactivates multiple oncogenic pathways and engages stress responses in colon cancer cells.

Hypertension and Risk of Endometrial Cancer: A Pooled Analysis in the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium (E2C2).

Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev

June 2024

Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, Keck School of Medicine of USC, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California.

Background: The incidence rates of endometrial cancer are increasing, which may partly be explained by the rising prevalence of obesity, an established risk factor for endometrial cancer. Hypertension, another component of metabolic syndrome, is also increasing in prevalence, and emerging evidence suggests that it may be associated with the development of certain cancers. The role of hypertension independent of other components of metabolic syndrome in the etiology of endometrial cancer remains unclear.

ERS International Congress 2023: highlights from the Interstitial Lung Diseases Assembly.

ERJ Open Res

March 2024

Centre for Interstitial Lung Diseases and Sarcoidosis, Department of Respiratory Medicine, Erasmus MC, University Medical Centre Rotterdam, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

This article summarises a selection of scientific highlights in the field of interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) presented at the International Congress of the European Respiratory Society in 2023. Translational and clinical studies focused on the whole spectrum of ILDs, from (ultra)rare ILDs to sarcoidosis, ILDs associated with connective tissue disease and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The main topics of the 2023 Congress presentations were improving the diagnostic process of ILDs, better prediction of disease course and investigation of novel treatment options.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between insulin resistance (IR)-related conditions, like type 2 diabetes and obesity, and neuropsychiatric disorders, highlighting the complexity of their co-occurrence as a public health issue.
  • Researchers used genome-wide association studies (GWASs) with a large sample size to analyze genetic correlations between these conditions, identifying various genomic regions with significant local correlations.
  • The findings suggest that these correlated regions are linked to important biological pathways, indicating potential targets for treatments and a need for an integrated approach to understanding and managing these interconnected health problems.

Article Synopsis
  • The MOSCA-FRAIL trial investigated treatment approaches for frail patients (aged ≥70) with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and found no significant difference in health outcomes after one year between invasive and conservative strategies.
  • Following extended follow-up until January 2023, the analysis of 167 patients indicated similar survival times and readmission rates, revealing that neither treatment significantly outperformed the other.
  • Overall, while initial outcomes suggested that invasive treatment might lead to shorter survival in the first year, the long-term results demonstrated inconclusive differences, highlighting the need for personalized treatment decisions in frail older adults.

Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring during surgery for brainstem lesions is a challenge for intraoperative neurophysiologists and surgeons. The brainstem is a small structure packed with vital neuroanatomic networks of long and short pathways passing through the brainstem or originating from it. Many central pattern generators exist within the brainstem for breathing, swallowing, chewing, cardiovascular regulation, and eye movement.

Linezolid Resistance Genes and Mutations among Linezolid-Susceptible spp.-A Loose Cannon?

Antibiotics (Basel)

January 2024

Nosocomial Pathogens and Antibiotic Resistances Unit, Department of Infectious Diseases, Robert Koch Institute, 38855 Wernigerode, Germany.

The National Reference Centre for Enterococci receives an increasing number of linezolid-resistant isolates. Linezolid (LIN) resistance is mediated by G2576T 23S rDNA gene mutations and/or acquisition of resistance genes (). There are anecdotal reports that those resistance traits may be present in phenotypically linezolid-susceptible isolates.

Lung-resident mesenchymal stem cells (LR-MSC) are thought to participate in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) by differentiating into myofibroblasts. On the other hand, LR-MSC in IPF patients present senescence-related features. It is unclear how they respond to a profibrotic environment.

Do risk factors differentiate DSM-5 and drive for thinness severity groups for anorexia nervosa?

J Eat Disord

January 2024

Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, The University of Melbourne, Redmond Barry Building, Level 7, Room 707, Melbourne, VIC, Australia.

Background: The current study examined whether risk factors for anorexia nervosa (AN) were related to different levels of severity based on (a) the DSM-5/body mass index (BMI) and (b) drive for thinness (DT) severity ratings.

Methods: The sample comprised 153 pairs of individuals with a lifetime diagnosis AN per DSM-IV criteria and their non-ED sisters (N = 306, mean age = 26.53; mean current BMI = 20.

Article Synopsis
  • * A lack of high-quality evidence makes it challenging to establish standardized practices for managing heart failure-related cardiogenic shock (HF-CS), which constitutes over half of CS cases.
  • * An international conference aimed to create a consensus on defining and managing HF-CS, involving 54 experts from various fields to review literature and discuss clinical practices for better outcomes.

The last decade has brought tremendous interest in the problem of cardiogenic shock. However, the mortality rate of this syndrome approaches 50%, and other than prompt myocardial revascularization, there have been no treatments proven to improve the survival of these patients. The bulk of studies have been in patients with acute myocardial infarction, and there is little evidence to guide the clinician in those patients with heart failure cardiogenic shock (HF-CS).

High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the deadliest gynecological malignancy. The most common form of metastatic spread of HGSOC is transcoelomic dissemination. In this process, detached cells from the primary tumor aggregate as tumorspheres and promote the accumulation of peritoneal ascites.
