Donated Human Milk as a Determinant Factor for the Gut Bifidobacterial Ecology in Premature Babies.

Microorganisms

May 2020

Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry of Dairy Products, Instituto de Productos Lácteos de Asturias (IPLA-CSIC), 33300 Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain.

Correct establishment of the gut microbiome is compromised in premature babies, with being one of the most affected genera. Prematurity often entails the inability to successfully breastfeed, therefore requiring the implementation of other feeding modes; breast milk expression from a donor mother is the recommended option when their own mother's milk is not available. Some studies showed different gut microbial profiles in premature infants fed with breast milk and donor human milk, however, it is not known how this affects the species composition of the genus .

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether patients over 75 who experience ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary PCI have similar survival rates as their peers.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 450 patients and found that their survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were comparable to a matched reference population, with no significant impact from sex on survival outcomes.
  • Overall, the findings indicate that the critical phase for survival is within the first 30 days post-STEMI, after which the long-term survival rates for elderly patients align closely with those of the general population.

Article Synopsis
  • Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is more effective than corticosteroids for achieving mucosal healing in children with Crohn's disease, without the negative side effects of steroids.
  • A study covering 222 newly diagnosed pediatric patients found that 83% achieved clinical remission after an average of 8 weeks of EEN, with significant reductions in faecal calprotectin levels.
  • Factors predicting a better response to EEN include specific scores on the Crohn's disease activity index, lower calprotectin levels, elevated CRP, and ileal involvement, suggesting EEN should be first-line treatment for pediatric Crohn's disease.

The clinical criteria for the diagnosis of urticarial vasculitis lack accuracy, according to previous studies. The aim of the study was to assess the accuracy of a clinical and a clinical-dermoscopic model for the differential diagnosis of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) and urticarial vasculitis (UV). Dermoscopic images of lesions with histopathologically confirmed diagnosis of CSU and UV were evaluated for the presence of selected criteria (purpuric patches/globules (PG) and red linear vessels).

Background & Aims: Information on safety and efficacy of systemic treatment in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) under dialysis are limited due to patient exclusion from clinical trials. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the rate, prevalence, tolerability, and outcome of sorafenib in this population.

Methods: We report a multicenter study comprising patients from Latin America and Europe.

The incidence of classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) in the HIV-1 setting has increased 5-25-fold compared to that observed in the general population. This study aimed to determine whether selected micro RNAs (miRs) and other soluble biomarkers and cellular subsets are dysregulated in cHL and could be used as biomarkers. This was a retrospective and longitudinal matched case-control study of 111 Caucasian, HIV-1-infected adult individuals, including 37 individuals with cHL and 74 with no type of cancer.

Life Expectancy after Surgery for Ascending Aortic Aneurysm.

J Clin Med

February 2020

Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del Principado de Asturias, 33011 Oviedo, Spain.

: The life expectancy of patients who undergo ascending aortic replacement is unknown. The life expectancy of a population depends on a collection of environmental and socio-economic factors of the territory where they reside. Our aim was to compare the life expectancy of patients undergoing surgery for ascending aortic aneurysm with that of the general population matching by age, sex, and territory.

Recent studies have found increases in the cardiovascular mortality rates during poor air quality events due to outbreaks of desert dust. In Tenerife, we collected (2014-2017) data in 829 patients admitted with a heart failure diagnosis in the Emergency Department of the University Hospital of the Canaries. In this region, concentrations of PM and PM are usually low (~20 and 10 µg/m), but they increase to 360 and 115 μg/m, respectively, during Saharan dust events.

In Vitro Evaluation of Different Prebiotics on the Modulation of Gut Microbiota Composition and Function in Morbid Obese and Normal-Weight Subjects.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2020

Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry of Dairy Products, Instituto de Productos Lácteos de Asturias (IPLA-CSIC), 33300 Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain.

The gut microbiota remains relatively stable during adulthood; however, certain intrinsic and environmental factors can lead to microbiota dysbiosis. Its restoration towards a healthy condition using best-suited prebiotics requires previous development of in vitro models for evaluating their functionality. Herein, we carried out fecal cultures with microbiota from healthy normal-weight and morbid obese adults.

Health-threatening consequences of carcinogen exposure are mediated via occurrence of electrophiles or reactive oxygen species. As a result, the accumulation of biomolecular damage leads to the cancer initiation, promotion or progression. Accordingly, there is an association between lifestyle factors including inappropriate diet or carcinogen formation during food processing, mainstream, second or third-hand tobacco smoke and other environmental or occupational carcinogens and malignant transformation.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LA) is the most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Despite the advances over last decade in new targeted therapies, cancer genetics, diagnostics, staging, and surgical techniques as well as new chemotherapy and radiotherapy protocols, the death rate from LA remains high. The tumour microenvironment is composed of several cytokines, one of which is transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), which modulates and mediates the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), correlated with invasive growth in LAs, and exhibits its pleiotropic effects through binding to transmembrane receptors TβR-1 (also termed activin receptor-like kinases - ALKs) and TβR-2.

Article Synopsis
  • The renin angiotensin system (RAS) is crucial for regulating fluid balance, blood pressure, and vascular tone, with two main components: the classical RAS (producing the vasoconstrictor Ang II) and the non-classical RAS (producing vasodilators like Ang (1-7) and alamandine).
  • Overactive classical RAS leads to increased vasoconstriction and vascular dysfunction, which are major contributors to cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, renal issues, and cancer growth.
  • Diminazene aceturate (DIZE), an antitrypanosomal drug, may help by activating ACE2, thus restoring balance in the RAS and improving conditions related to cardiovascular diseases and

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers applied a new testing protocol to analyze samples from 220 patients across various Spanish hospitals, finding that 88.6% had at least one RAS, with specific patterns linked to different HCV subtypes.
  • * The findings reveal that certain patients had RAS not affected by the drugs they received, indicating the necessity for thorough RAS testing, especially since ribavirin treatment did not impact RAS diversity or type.

One of the most common mechanisms of immune evasion in MSI colorectal cancers (CRCs) is loss of HLA class I expression due to mutations in B2M gene which can become a negative predictor for checkpoint blockade therapy. The aim of this study was the determination of prevalence of B2M somatic mutations in MSI CRC patients and relationship between B2M mutations and lymphocytes infiltration and other clinicopathological features as well as detection of methylation changes in B2M promoter region which can be another mechanism of immune escape. In our study, 37 MSI-H and 5 MSI-L patients were selected for screening of B2M mutational and methylation status.
