As early commencement of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment has been shown to substantially improve outcomes, it is of utmost importance to make a timely diagnosis of this disease. Despite undisputed sensitivity of fecal calprotectin, the most widely accepted IBD biomarker, in discriminating between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and IBD, as well as recognized role in monitoring disease activity and response to therapy, perhaps the biggest setback of calprotectin use in IBD is lack of specificity. Therefore, an additional biomarker in IBD is warranted.

Knowledge, Attitudes, Psychosocial Perspectives and Applied Epidemiology in the Control of Head Lice () in Croatian Preschool Children: A Qualitative Study on Childcare Professionals and Health Coordinators.

This study aimed to concurrently determine the perceived knowledge, attitudes and perspectives of childcare professionals working in kindergartens towards , a common ectoparasitic disease also known as head lice, as well as gain insights into procedures and control measures that are implemented in an outbreak setting. We used a qualitative approach with a problem-centered, semi-structured and three-part interview technique conducted in selected kindergartens of Varaždin and Međimurje counties of the Republic of Croatia. Based on a purposive (deliberate) sampling method, the study included both childcare professionals and on-site health coordinators aged between 21 and 56 years of age.

Vaccination in pediatric acquired inflammatory immune-mediated neuromuscular disorders.

Aim: To analyse literature data on vaccine related induction, worsening of the disease and disease reccurrences as well as vaccine safety and efficacy among pediatric patients with acquired inflammatory immune-mediated neuromuscular disorders (NMD).

Methods: Medline, Pub Med and Scopus database search from 1975 to 2020 focused on pediatric age was conducted including peer reviews, meta analyses and epidemiological studies on vaccination and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), Bell's palsy, optic neuritis (ON), myasthenia gravis (MG), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and immune-mediated inflammatory myopathy (IM).

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine if elevated concentration of soluble receptor tunica interna endothelial cell kinase-2 (Tie-2) in the amniotic fluid represent a risk factor for the subsequent development of preeclampsia (PE).

Study Design: Amniotic fluid samples were collected as a part of routine clinical diagnostics from women referred to clinical care due to genetic indications. A total of 12 women with preeclampsia and 26 normotensive pregnant women were included in the study.

The aims of this study were to determine: 1) the general opinion of Croatian medical biochemistry laboratories (MBLs) about the importance of interpretative comments on laboratory test reports, and 2) to find out whether harmonization of interpretative comments is needed.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study was designed as a survey by the Working Group for Post-analytics as part of national External Quality Assessment (EQA) program.

West Nile virus (WNV) is one of the most widely distributed (re-)emerging arboviruses. In Croatia, acute WNV infections as well as seropositivity were detected in humans, horses, birds and poultry. Although serologic evidence of WNV human infections dates back to the 1970s, no clinical cases were reported until 2012.

Rapid COVID-19 Antigen Testing in Croatia: Risk Perception Plays an Important Role in the Epidemic Control.

To explore the clinical presentation and epidemiological history of the subjects who underwent SARS-CoV-2 antigen testing. We included 1,000 consecutive subjects who presented themselves at the diagnostic clinic in Croatia and analyzed their symptoms and epidemiological history. All subjects were classified into three groups, according to their reason of arrival; symptomatic, contacts of confirmed patients, and those who were tested due to administrative reasons.

Unusual presentations of actinomycosis: a case series and literature review.

Objective: The objective of this study was to report the identification of antibodies against the glutamate kainate receptor subunit 2 (GluK2-abs) in patients with autoimmune encephalitis, and describe the clinical-immunological features and antibody effects.

Methods: Two sera from 8 patients with similar rat brain immunostaining were used to precipitate the antigen from neuronal cultures. A cell-based assay (CBA) with GluK2-expressing HEK293 cells was used to assess 596 patients with different neurological disorders, and 23 healthy controls.

COVID-19 convalescent plasma as long-term therapy in immunodeficient patients?

Objectives: The patients with hematological malignancies are a vulnerable group to COVID-19, due to the immunodeficiency resulting from the underlying disease and oncological treatment that significantly impair cellular and humoral immunity. Here we report on a beneficial impact of a passive immunotherapy with convalescent plasma to treat a prolonged, active COVID-19 infection in a patient with a history of nasopharyngeal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma treated with the therapy inducing substantial impairment of particularly humoral arm of immune system. The specific aim was to quantify SARS-CoV2 neutralizing antibodies in a patient plasma during the course of therapy.

Antiviral Cytokine Response in Neuroinvasive and Non-Neuroinvasive West Nile Virus Infection.

Data on the immune response to West Nile virus (WNV) are limited. We analyzed the antiviral cytokine response in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of patients with WNV fever and WNV neuroinvasive disease using a multiplex bead-based assay for the simultaneous quantification of 13 human cytokines. The panel included cytokines associated with innate and early pro-inflammatory immune responses (TNF-α/IL-6), Th1 (IL-2/IFN-γ), Th2 (IL-4/IL-5/IL-9/IL-13), Th17 immune response (IL-17A/IL-17F/IL-21/IL-22) and the key anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

Methods: Data on patients aged ≤19 years with a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test recorded in the period March 12-May 12 (first wave) and June 19-July 19, 2020 (second wave) were retrospectively analyzed. The periods were separated by several weeks with no incident cases.
