Owing to the paucity of information on the clinical outcomes in female patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in relation to the comorbid disease burden, we explored the differences in their clinical outcomes and identified predictive indicators. A total of 3,419 female AMI patients were stratified into two groups: Group A (those with zero or one comorbid diseases) (n=1,983) and Group B (those with two to five comorbid diseases) (n=1,436). Five comorbid conditions were considered: hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, prior coronary artery disease, and prior cerebrovascular accidents.

Early Invasive Strategy Based on the Time of Symptom Onset of Non-ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction.

JACC Cardiovasc Interv

January 2023

Department of Cardiology, Heart and Brain Hospital, Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background: A limitation of the current guidelines regarding the timing of invasive coronary angiography for patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome is the randomization time. To date, no study has reported the clinical outcomes of invasive strategy timing on the basis of the time of symptom onset.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of invasive strategy timing from the time of symptom onset on the 3-year clinical outcomes of patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional vascular grafts often fail in cardiovascular patients due to issues like thrombosis, especially when suitable donor tissue is unavailable.
  • Researchers tested biodegradable polycaprolactone/polydioxanone (PCL/PDO) grafts in rats, showing they were fully functional and structurally similar to natural arteries after 12 weeks.
  • The promising results suggest these synthetic grafts could be a viable option for patients lacking suitable donor vessels, but more long-term studies are necessary before they can be used in humans.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) may be a viable salvage therapy in selected patients with septic shock. As ECMO use increases, we studied left ventricular (LV) performance during sepsis with and without ECMO using a pressure-volume (PV) loop in a murine model and aimed to understand LV hemodynamics in septic shock with ECMO. The rats were divided into Group 1 (ECMO applied to healthy rats), Group 2 (ECMO for septic rats), Group 3 (Controls, n = 20) and Group 4 (Sepsis induction only, n = 20).

Article Synopsis
  • * From 672 analyzed lesions, 14.4% showed growth over an average follow-up of 68 months, with factors like initial size, hemorrhagic spots, and specific ultrasound findings linked to increased size.
  • * Despite some lesions increasing in size, there were no related deaths during the follow-up, suggesting that most small UGI-SELs have a good prognosis, although close monitoring is advised for those with certain concerning features.

The incidence of acute subdural hemorrhage (ASDH), which is often caused by head trauma, is steadily increasing due to an increase in the elderly population and the use of anticoagulants. Urgent surgical treatment is recommended if the patient has impaired consciousness, worsening neurological symptoms, or brain midline shift (MLS) due to large hematomas on brain computed tomography (CT). Although large craniotomy is traditionally recommended for ASDH removal, old age, comorbidities, and antiplatelet drugs are considered risk factors for surgical complications, many neurosurgeons hesitate to perform aggressive surgical procedures in these patients.

Introduction: Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (Nf1), also termed von Recklinghausen disease, is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder accompanied by several osseous and skeletal manifestations. In NF, hypophosphatemia linked to secondary hyperparathyroidism due to Vitamin D deficiency and low calcium intake has been reported as a risk factor for low bone mass density (BMD), but reports of NF1 associated oncogenic hypophosphatemic osteomalacia (HO) are extremely rare.

Case Report: We report a patient with NF1 associated with intracranial low-grade gliomas and congenital renal agenesis suffering from HO.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results showed that subsidence occurred in 45.2% of patients and 48.1% of segments, yet both groups (subsidence and non-subsidence) experienced improved pain and disability scores.
  • * Although subsidence increased segmental angle (SA) and cervical sagittal alignment (CSA) over time, the differences in these measurements and fusion rates between the groups were not statistically significant, suggesting subsidence does not majorly impact long-term outcomes if foramen decompression

Despite many promising results obtained in previous preclinical studies, the clinical development of encapsulated cell technology (ECT) for the delivery of therapeutic proteins from macrocapsules is still limited, mainly due to the lack of an allogeneic cell line compatible with therapeutic application in humans. In our work, we generated an immortalized human myoblast cell line specifically tailored for macroencapsulation. In the present report, we characterized the immortalized myoblasts and described the engineering process required for the delivery of functional therapeutic proteins including a cytokine, monoclonal antibodies and a viral antigen.
