Background: Smartphone-based support can reach thousands of smokers and help those who would otherwise try to quit smoking by themselves with little chance of success. Nicotine medications double the chances of quitting smoking, but few smokers use them, and they often use them for too short a time and at an insufficient dose. It is therefore important to increase access to support for smoking cessation and compliance with nicotine therapy.

Lipid droplets (LD) are affected in multiple human disorders. These highly dynamic organelles are involved in many cellular roles. While their intracellular dispersion is crucial to ensure their function and other organelles-contact, underlying mechanisms are still unclear.

Introduction: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the spine characterized among other features by spinal boney proliferation, back pain, loss of flexibility, and increased fracture risk. Overlying bone limits the utility of bone mineral density (BMD) by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in the spine. Trabecular bone score (TBS) is a bone texture measurement derived from the spine DXA image that indicates bone quality and fracture risk independent of BMD.

Almost one third of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases are diagnosed in an emergency setting, mostly among geriatric patients. Clinical scenarios are often complex and decision making delicate. Besides the obvious need to consider the patient's and/or family and care givers' desires, the surgeon should be able to make the best educated guess on future outcomes in three areas: oncological prognosis, morbidity and mortality risk, and long-term functional loss.

Trimethylamine--oxide (TMAO) can be produced by the gut microbiota from dietary substrates and is associated with cardiovascular disease. While dairy products contain TMAO precursors, the effect of fermented dairy on TMAO metabolism remains unclear. We used plasma and urine samples collected for two randomised cross-over studies to evaluate the effects of fermented dairy consumption on TMAO metabolism.

Cholesterol is a member of the sterol family that plays essential roles in biological processes, including cell membrane stability and myelin formation. Cholesterol can be metabolized into several molecules including bile acids, hormones, and oxysterols. Studies from the last few decades have demonstrated that oxysterols are not only active metabolites but are further involved in the modulation of immune responses.

Background And Aims: The Pathways Model (Blaszczynski & Nower, 2002) posits that problem gambling is a heterogeneous disorder with distinct subgroups (behaviorally conditioned gamblers, emotionally vulnerable gamblers, and antisocial-impulsivist gamblers). Impulsivity traits and gambling-related cognitions are recognized as two key psychological factors in the onset and maintenance of problem gambling. To date, these constructs have been explored separately, and their joint role in determining problem gambling subtypes has received little attention.

Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) require specific perioperative care, and clinical practice in this area remains poorly defined. We aimed to conduct a systematic, PRISMA-based review of the literature, available clinical guidelines and practice recommendations. We also aimed to extract any valuable information for the "best of available-evidence"-based prevention of perioperative adverse events in children with SCD, and highlight the most urgent priorities in clinical research.

Objective: The critics and recommendations for communication training in oncology call for new ideas, which may contribute to designing the next generation of training. The aim of this work was to search the literature on communication in oncology for empirically grounded observations that might be useful for the development of training approaches.
Methods: The approach consists of identifying findings that might serve as cues for the design of the next generation of training.

Skeletal muscle (SM) insulin resistance (IR) plays an important role in the burden of obesity, particularly because it leads to glucose intolerance and type 2 diabetes. Among the mechanisms thought to link IR to obesity is the accumulation, in muscle cells, of different lipid metabolites. Diacylglycerols (DAGs) are subject of particular attention due to reported interactions with the insulin signaling cascade.

Over the past decades, technological advances have transformed radiation therapy (RT) into a precise and powerful treatment for cancer patients. Nevertheless, the treatment of radiation-resistant tumors is still restricted by the dose-limiting normal tissue complications. In this context, FLASH-RT is emerging in the field.

We studied the performance of several meta-analysis methods in rare event settings, when the treatment effect is assumed to be homogeneous and baseline prevalences are either homogeneous or heterogeneous. We conducted extensive simulations that included the three most common effect sizes with count data: the odds ratio, the relative risk, and the risk difference. We investigated several important scenarios by varying the level of rareness, the value of the trials' arms unbalance, and the size of the treatment effect.

Task-based image quality procedures in CT that substitute a human observer with a model observer usually use single-slice images with uniform backgrounds from homogeneous phantoms. However, anatomical structures and inhomogeneities in organs generate noise that can affect the detection performance of human observers. The purpose of this work was to assess the impact of background type, uniform or liver, and the viewing modality, single- or multislice, on the detection performance of human and model observers.

Background: Human skeletal muscle is composed of a functional and metabolic continuum of slow (Type I) and fast fibers (IIa and IIx). Hybrid fibers co-expressing different myosin heavy chains are also present and seem to be more prominent in aging muscle. Their role is debated; hybrid fibers were reported either in a transitional state, between slow and fast fibers, or as fixed individual entities.

We describe here a rare case of septic pseudarthrosis due to Erysipelatoclostridium ramosum in a female young patient. The patient, currently in remission from Ewing's sarcoma treated by a bone resection and allograft combined with chemotherapy, suffered from a chronic femoral pseudarthrosis in a context of bone insufficiency and graft resorption. A broad range 16S PCR followed by sequencing, as well as an enrichment culture of a bone biopsy revealed the presence of E.

Introduction: Daytime sleepiness is highly prevalent in the general adult population and has been linked to an increased risk of workplace and vehicle accidents, lower professional performance and poorer health. Despite the established relationship between noise and daytime sleepiness, little research has explored the individual-level spatial distribution of noise-related sleep disturbances. We assessed the spatial dependence of daytime sleepiness and tested whether clusters of individuals exhibiting higher daytime sleepiness were characterized by higher nocturnal noise levels than other clusters.

Objective: To retrospectively compare the benefits (episode cessation) and risks of IV methylprednisolone (IV-MP) vs abstention during prolonged Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) episodes.
Methods: A total of 26 patients with KLS received 1 g/d IV-MP for 3 days during 1 to 6 episodes each (totaling 43 IV-MP sessions). The change of episode duration with IV-MP (vs previous episode duration) was compared with the change duration between 2 consecutive episodes in 48 untreated patients matched for age, sex, age at KLS onset, number of episodes, and disease duration (more treated than untreated patients had long episodes).

Purpose Of Review: Immune checkpoint inhibitors represent a major step forward in the field of oncologic immunotherapy these last years and have significantly increased survival of cancer patients in an ever-growing number of indications. These agents block specific immune checkpoint molecules (programmed cell death protein 1 and its ligand as well as cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4) that normally downregulate the immune response. These new agents show a specific range of adverse effects induced by abnormal immunologic activation.

This article reports on what is at work during individual supervision of medical students in the context of teaching breaking bad news (BBN). Surprisingly, there is a relative lack of research and report on the topic of supervision, even though it is regularly used in medical training. Building on our research and teaching experience on BBN at the undergraduate level, as well as interviews of supervisors, the following key elements have been identified: learning objectives (e.
