Proficiency in bariatric surgery may shorten the learning curve for minimally-invasive D2 gastrectomy.

Langenbecks Arch Surg

October 2024

Department of General, Visceral, Transplantation, Vascular and Pediatric Surgery, Center of Operative Medicine (ZOM), University Hospital of Wuerzburg, Wuerzburg, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared minimally-invasive gastrectomy and open surgery, finding that the former provides similar cancer outcomes with fewer complications and shorter recovery times for gastric cancer patients in Europe.
  • Data was collected from primary bariatric surgeries and subsequent minimally-invasive gastrectomies, focusing on operation time, lymph node yield, and postoperative complications.
  • Results indicated that surgeons improved their skills over time, achieving high cancer removal rates, and overall safe outcomes, although robotic surgery had longer operation times compared to laparoscopic techniques.

Rapid and resource-efficient sample processing, high throughput, and high robustness are critical for effective scientific and clinical application of advanced antigen-specific immunoassays. Traditionally, such immunoassays, especially antigen-specific T-cell analysis by flow cytometry or enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot assays, often rely on the isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. This process is time-consuming, subject to many pre-analytic confounders, and requires large blood volumes.

Objectives: Platelets, originally described for their role in blood coagulation, are now also recognized as key players in modulating inflammation, tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, and carcinogenesis. Recent evidence suggests that platelets also influence insulin secretion from pancreatic β cells. The multifaceted functions of platelets are mediated by the factors stored in their alpha granules (AGs) and dense granules (DGs).

Long noncoding (lnc)RNAs emerge as regulators of genome stability. The nuclear-enriched abundant transcript 1 (NEAT1) is overexpressed in many tumors and is responsive to genotoxic stress. However, the mechanism that links NEAT1 to DNA damage response (DDR) is unclear.

Head of Surgery for Upper Gastrointestinal Tract and Metabolic Surgery, Department of General, Visceral, Transplantation, Vascular and Pediatric Surgery, Center of Operative Medicine (ZOM), University Hospital of Würzburg, Würzburg, Germany.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is the preferred surgical option for patients with proven gastroesophageal reflux disease and obesity grade ≥ II (BMI ≥ 35 kg/m). Data on simultaneous treatment of larger hiatal hernias during RYGB are scarce. From 2012 until 2022, data from all consecutive patients undergoing gastric bypass procedures were collected and retrospectively analyzed.

Introduction: Challenging behaviour (CB) is a common issue among children with autism spectrum disorder or intellectual and developmental disability. Mental health applications are low-threshold cost-effective tools to address the lack of resources for caregivers. This pre-post study evaluated the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of the smartphone app using algorithm-based behaviour analysis to identify causes of CB and provide individualized practical guidance to manage and prevent CB.

Background: Medical education integrates skills training and simulation to prepare students for clinical tasks. A seminar on interventional radiology was restructured to include specific practical training utilizing a 3D-catheter model. We aimed to investigate the complex interplay between student evaluations, their visual-spatial ability and practical performance.

Clinical presentation and burden of ENPP1 deficiency in adults.

Musculoskeletal Center Würzburg, University Hospital Würzburg, Brettreichstr. 11, 97074 Würzburg, Germany. Electronic address:

While the clinical consequences of severe ENPP1 deficiency leading to the rare disorders generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI) and autosomal recessive hypophosphatemic rickets type 2 (ARHR2) are well defined and understood, much less is known about how this evolves into adulthood and how moderate ENPP1 deficiency can first manifest in adulthood. Moreover, growing evidence substantiates an association of genetic variants in the ENPP1 gene with a wide range of further clinical manifestations including early-onset osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and different forms of spinal ligament calcifications, i.e.

This retrospective study compared the diagnostic accuracy of conventional radiography (CR) and computed tomography (CT) in classifying Kienböck's disease (KD) according to Lichtman staging. Besides age, cartilage condition and vascularity, bone morphology is important in choosing the most appropriate treatment in KD. In 278 patients, two musculoskeletal radiologists performed a consensus reading of 281 lunate necroses according to the Lichtman classification, based on CR and CT.

Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin D is key for healthy bones and muscles, and its deficiency can lead to worse outcomes in patients facing total joint arthroplasty (TJA), including increased risk for infections.
  • *Recent research assessed vitamin D levels in 249 patients scheduled for revision total joint arthroplasty (rTJA), revealing that 81% of those not taking vitamin D supplements had insufficient levels.
  • *Key findings indicate that patients who take vitamin D regularly have higher levels, and factors such as BMI and smoking may contribute to vitamin D deficiency in those not supplementing.

Objectives: There are an increasing number of centers performing research on high-resolution vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging (VW-MRI) in giant cell arteritis (GCA). However, harmonized approaches to VW-MRI in GCA are lacking and are essential to performing multicentre studies. Using a data-driven, consensus-based approach, an international expert group developed a standardized MRI protocol and scoring system to advance multi-centered research in cranial GCA.

Postencephalitic parkinsonism (PEP) is suggested to show a virus-induced pathology, which is different from classical idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) as there is no α-synuclein/Lewy body pathology. However, PEP shows a typical clinical representation of motor disturbances. In addition, compared to PD, there is no iron-induced pathology.

Background: The planning and implementation of intervention measures against schistosomiasis, particularly mass administration, require knowledge of the current status of the infection. This is important for monitoring the impact of the intervention on disease indicators such as a decline in infection prevalence, intensity of infection, and urogenital morbidities. Following repeated rounds of mass treatment in northwestern Tanzania, the epidemiology of urogenital schistosomiasis has changed; thus, for the effective planning and allocation of resources, it is important to understand the current status of the disease in the targeted groups.
