Introduction: The Covid-19 pandemic raised profound questions regarding healthcare values and responsibility for managing collective and individual needs. This context presents a unique opportunity to explore the experiences of newly qualified therapeutic radiographers transitioning to work.

Method: An interpretivist qualitative design used one-to-one, semi-structured interviews.

EarLy Exercise in blunt Chest wall Trauma: A multi-centre, parallel randomised controlled trial (ELECT2 Trial).

Introduction: The aim of this trial was to investigate the impact of early thoracic and shoulder girdle exercises on chronic pain and Health-Related Quality of Life in patients with blunt chest wall trauma, when compared to normal care.

Methods: A multi-centre, parallel, randomised controlled trial, in which adult patients presenting to hospital with blunt chest wall trauma were allocated to either control or intervention group. The intervention was an exercise programme consisting of four simple thoracic and shoulder girdle exercises, completed for one week.

Urine organic acid metabolomic profiling by gas chromatography mass spectrometry: Assessment of solvent extract evaporation parameters on the recovery of key diagnostic metabolites.

Background: Analysis of urinary organic acids (UOAs) by gas chromatography mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) is widely used in metabolomic studies. It is a complex test with many limitations and pitfalls yet there is limited evidence in the literature to support best practice. This study investigated the impact of drying down time and temperature on the recovery of 16 key analytes from solvent extracts.

Consistency in the Assessment of Dried Blood Spot Specimen Size and Quality in U.K. Newborn Screening Laboratories.

In 2015, U.K. newborn screening (NBS) laboratory guidelines were introduced to standardize dried blood spot (DBS) specimen quality acceptance and specify a minimum acceptable DBS diameter of ≥7 mm.

A retrospective database analysis of pediatric parathyroidectomies from the United Kingdom registry of endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons.

Introduction: The United Kingdom Registry of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgery (UKRETS) holds the largest database of pediatric parathyroidectomy cases globally. There are currently no quoted acceptable cure or complication rates in the literature.

Methods: This retrospective database analysis evaluates the efficacy and safety of targeted parathyroidectomy (tPTx) and bilateral neck exploration (BNE) in first-time parathyroidectomy for pediatric primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) through analysis of the UKRETS database (1995-2022).

Robotic and Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy for Pheochromocytoma: An International Multicenter Study.

Background And Objective: Robotic adrenalectomy (RA) has attracted interest as an alternative to laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) for patients with pheochromocytoma, although its beneficial effects are uncertain. Our aim was to compare RA and LA outcomes for these patients.

Methods: Data for patients who underwent RA or LA for pheochromocytoma in 46 international centers between 2012 and 2022 were reviewed.

Outcomes of head trauma in children admitted to a tertiary paediatric intensive care unit in South Wales.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the demographics and outcomes of major paediatric head trauma managed in our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in South Wales and comparison is made with the existing published literature.

Design And Setting: A retrospective review of medical records and imaging of patients identified from the paediatric neurosurgical trauma database at University Hospital Wales (UHW) from March 2013 to July 2021. We assessed the GCS at admission, mechanism of injury, CT scan, type of surgery required and GOS after 12 months.

X marks the spot: catheter aspiration using the Inari FlowTriever device to debulk defibrillator lead vegetations prior to transvenous lead extraction-a case report.

Background: When cardiac implantable electronic device infection occurs, standard therapy is usually total system extraction. Transvenous lead extraction is preferable to open heart surgical extraction, unless contraindicated because of the presence of very large vegetations on the intravenous leads according to the European Society of Cardiology guidelines. Extraction of transvenous leads with vegetations risks distal embolism resulting in obstruction and/or infection in the pulmonary arteries.

English Translation of the Breastfeeding Knowledge Survey for Pediatricians.

Pediatricians need to be knowledgeable to adequately carry out their role in the support of breastfeeding, so assessing their knowledge of breastfeeding is vitally important. There are not English language validated questionnaires for pediatricians in the literature; however, in Spanish and Portuguese, there is the Breastfeeding Knowledge Survey (ECoLa, derived from ). Our goal is to translate the ECoLa into English.

Hydroxyapatite ceramic-coated femoral components in younger patients followed up for 27 to 32 years.

Aims: This study reports the results of 38 total hip arthroplasties (THAs) in 33 patients aged less than 50 years, using the JRI Furlong hydroxyapatite ceramic (HAC)-coated femoral component.

Methods: We describe the survival, radiological, and functional outcomes of 33 patients (38 THAs) at a mean follow-up of 27 years (25 to 32) between 1988 and 2018.

Results: Of the surviving 30 patients (34 THAs), there were four periprosthetic fractures: one underwent femoral revision after 21 years, two had surgical fixation as the stem was deemed stable, and one was treated nonoperatively due to the patient's comorbidities.

Retrospective Review of Positive Newborn Screening Results for Isovaleric Acidemia and Development of a Strategy to Improve the Efficacy of Newborn Screening in the UK.

Since the UK commenced newborn screening for isovaleric acidemia in 2015, changes in prescribing have increased the incidence of false positive (FP) results due to pivaloylcarnitine. A review of screening results between 2015 and 2022 identified 24 true positive (TP) and 84 FP cases, with pivalate interference confirmed in 76/84. Initial C5 carnitine (C5C) did not discriminate between FP and TP with median (range) C5C of 2.

Effects of rare kidney diseases on kidney failure: a longitudinal analysis of the UK National Registry of Rare Kidney Diseases (RaDaR) cohort.

Background: Individuals with rare kidney diseases account for 5-10% of people with chronic kidney disease, but constitute more than 25% of patients receiving kidney replacement therapy. The National Registry of Rare Kidney Diseases (RaDaR) gathers longitudinal data from patients with these conditions, which we used to study disease progression and outcomes of death and kidney failure.

Methods: People aged 0-96 years living with 28 types of rare kidney diseases were recruited from 108 UK renal care facilities.

Impact of rituximab treatment regime on time to relapse in aquaporin-4 antibody positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.

Background: Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody associated neuromyelitis optica (NMOSD) requires long-term immunosuppression. Rituximab is increasingly used worldwide, however the optimal regime is not established.

Methods: We retrospectively examined different rituximab regimens in AQP4-NMOSD.

Chronic total occlusion in non-ST elevation myocardial infarction - A multi-centre observational study.

Objectives: To evaluate the characteristics and outcomes of patients with a chronic total occlusion (CTO) in a Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI) cohort.

Background: There is limited data on the clinical characteristics, revascularisation strategies and outcomes of patients presenting with a NSTEMI and a CTO.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of a six-centre percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) registry in the UK between January 2015 and December 2020 was performed.

A retrospective observational study investigating safety netting documentation in the emergency department.

Background: Safety netting is an important aspect of medical practice, especially for first contact clinicians. Adequate safety netting provision and documentation is vital for optimal patient care and medicolegal security. This is the first study to report safety netting documentation practices in the emergency department, a specialty with a variety of high-acuity presentations and which is particularly vulnerable to medicolegal issues.

Incidental Detection of Classical Galactosemia through Newborn Screening for Phenylketonuria: A 10-Year Retrospective Audit to Determine the Efficacy of This Approach.

In the UK, Classical Galactosaemia (CG) is identified incidentally from the Newborn Screening (NBS) for phenylketonuria (PKU) using an "Other disorder suspected" (ODS) pathway when phenylalanine (Phe) and tyrosine (Tyr) concentrations are increased. We aimed to determine the efficacy of CG detection via NBS and estimate the incidence of CG in live births in the UK. A survey was sent to all UK NBS laboratories to collate CG cases diagnosed in the UK from 2010 to 2020.

Learning needs of junior doctors in otolaryngology: a qualitative study.

Objectives: There is concern that junior doctors are not prepared for their post-graduate attachments in ENT. The aims of this study were to capture the learning priorities of those in the ENT first on-call role and facilitate further educational opportunities to address these needs.

Method: Semi-structured interviews were undertaken to explore the learning needs of junior doctors with seven junior and two senior ENT clinicians.

Early Time Courses of Recurrent Venous Thromboembolism and Bleeding during Apixaban or Dalteparin Therapy for Patients with Cancer.

Background:  In patients with acute venous thromboembolism (VTE), the rates of recurrence and major bleeding are highest during the first weeks of anticoagulation. The CARAVAGGIO trial demonstrated noninferiority of apixaban to dalteparin for treatment of cancer-associated VTE without an increased risk of major bleeding. We compared the early time course of VTE recurrence and major bleeding events of apixaban compared with dalteparin at 7, 30, and 90 days of treatment in patients with cancer-associated VTE.

Efficacy and safety of tirbanibulin 1% ointment in actinic keratoses: Data from two phase-III trials and the real-life clinical practice presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Congress 2022.

Background: The 31 European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress took place between 7 and 10 of September 2022 in Milan, Italy.

Objectives: We report presented clinical data on the efficacy/effectiveness, safety and tolerability of tirbanibulin 1% ointment that has recently been licensed for actinic keratosis (AK) of the face or scalp in adults.

An Open-Source Deep Learning Algorithm for Efficient and Fully Automatic Analysis of the Choroid in Optical Coherence Tomography.

Purpose: To develop an open-source, fully automatic deep learning algorithm, DeepGPET, for choroid region segmentation in optical coherence tomography (OCT) data.

Methods: We used a dataset of 715 OCT B-scans (82 subjects, 115 eyes) from three clinical studies related to systemic disease. Ground-truth segmentations were generated using a clinically validated, semiautomatic choroid segmentation method, Gaussian Process Edge Tracing (GPET).
