Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Pathology, University Hospital Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam/ACTA, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Objective: This retrospective study evaluated survival rates, prognosis, and overall success of autotransplanted teeth in young patients missing anterior teeth as a result of trauma, agenesis, or developmental disturbances.

Study Design: Retrospective data were collected from the medical records of patients who had undergone tooth autotransplantations to anterior sites between January 2001 and December 2012. Clinical variables, such as gender, age, surgical indications, donor and recipient sites, type of anesthetics, bone augmentation, and complications during follow-up, were assessed.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the use of bone augmentation materials in Finland from 1994 to 2012 by assessing removal rates of implants placed in combination with autologous bone, xenogeneic grafts, and synthetic alloplastic materials.

Materials And Methods: The National Institute for Health and Welfare in Finland granted permission to access raw data of the Finnish Dental Implant Register for implant augmentation materials and removal rates of implants placed in augmented sites from April 1994 to April 2012.

Results: A total of 198,538 implants were placed in Finland between 1994 and 2012 in 110,543 operations.

Objective: To test the efficacy of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on functional status, walking speed and vibration perception in patients with chronic, incomplete spinal cord injury.

Methods: Twenty SCI patients were randomized in a trial with a double-blind, crossover design to receive four weeks of orally administered 4-AP, followed by a two-week wash-out period and four weeks of placebo, or vice versa. The total daily dose of 4-AP during the four weeks of treatment was systematically increased to a maximum of 0.

Treatment of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (CRPS type 1): a research synthesis of 21 randomized clinical trials.

J Pain Symptom Manage

June 2001

Department of Anesthesiology, Research Institute for Clinical and Fundamental Human Movement Sciences, University Hospital Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

A blinded meta analysis was performed on randomized clinical trials (RCT) on the medicinal treatment of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (complex regional pain syndrome type I) to assess the methodological quality and quantify the analgesic effect of treatments by calculating individual and summary effect sizes. The internal validity of 21 RCTs was investigated and the quality weighted summary effect size was calculated using a fixed effect model (Glass Delta). The methodological quality ranged from moderate to good (average 46%).

Background: Hepatic arterial chemotherapy for liver metastases of colorectal cancer is still under discussion. Mainly because of the technical complications of this mode of treatment and the lack of a survival benefit in randomized studies. We performed an analysis of hepatic arterial 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy in 145 consecutive patients treated at a single institution.

Displacement of the polished stem of a total hip arthroplasty from its cemented mantle occurred as a complication of an attempted closed reduction after luxation. No cement fractures were seen during subsequent reoperation. The complication can be avoided if cement is placed over the shoulder of the prosthesis.

Background: The prognosis of malignant gliomas remains poor. In recurrent disease, chemotherapy can be considered.

Patients And Methods: In this phase II study we determined the anti-tumour efficacy of paclitaxel 200 mg/m2 in a three-hour intravenous infusion every three weeks in chemonaïve patients with recurrent high-grade glioma in terms of response, survival, and quality of life.

Study Objectives: To study tissue effects of bronchoscopic electrocautery (BE).

Design: In six patients with non-small cell lung cancer, a BE procedure was performed immediately before surgery. After patients were placed on ventilation, normal mucosa on different carinae was treated with a cautery probe (2-mm(2) surface area) at a power setting of 30 W with a variable time of application of 1 to 5 s.

Thirty patients with chemotherapy-naïve advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) were given escalating doses of paclitaxel (150, 175, 200 mg/m2) on day 1 in three consecutive cycles, together with a fixed dose of gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8; cycles were repeated every three weeks. The dose escalation of paclitaxel was feasible in the majority of patients. Subsequently, 30 other NSCLC patients received a dose of 200 mg/m2 paclitaxel with gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 in a phase II study.

Anticancer drugs exert at least part of their cytotoxic effect by triggering apoptosis. We previously identified chemotherapy-induced apoptosis in lung cancer cells and suggested a role for p53 alternative or complementary pathways in this process. Recently, a role for the Fas/FasL (CD95/Apo1) signaling system in chemotherapy-induced apoptosis was proposed in some cell types.

The purpose of this study was to determine the safety and efficacy of filgrastim as an adjunct to induction and consolidation chemotherapy in poor risk patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Filgrastim was given both during and after chemotherapy with the objective to accelerate hematopoietic repopulation and enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy. In a prospective randomized multicentre phase II trial, a total of 64 patients with poor risk primary MDS were randomized to receive either granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF, filgrastim, AMGEN, Breda, The Netherlands) 5 microg/kg/day subcutaneously or no G-CSF in addition to daunomycin (30 mg/m2/days 1, 2 and 3 intravenous bolus) and cytarabine (200 mg/m2 days 1-7, continuous infusion).

Combination chemotherapy with procarbazine, CCNU and vincristine (PCV) may be effective in patients with recurrent glioma. Response monitoring is mandatory, but radiological response evaluation is often difficult. We evaluated Thallium-201 (201Tl) SPECT as a response parameter in ten patients treated with intensive PCV chemotherapy for recurrent glioma.

Several studies have pointed out that L-selectin on CD34-positive cells plays a role in haematopoietic reconstitution after peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) transplantation. Since it is known that a decrease in L-selectin expression in lymphocytes and granulocytes can be induced by a variety of stress situations, we have investigated in this study whether the freeze-thawing procedure, used in PBSC transplantation, would affect L-selectin expression on CD34+ stem cells. Flow cytometry was performed by labelling the cells with anti-CD34 (HPCA2 PE) and anti-CD62L (FMC46 FITC).

Background: Reliable reporting of chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity is important. The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the differences in the peripheral neurotoxicity sections of several widely used chemotherapy-related toxicity grading systems, and the differences in the way in which observers interpret these scales.

Patients And Methods: Two neurologists independently rated the severity of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, according to WHO, ECOG, Ajani, and NCIC-CTC criteria in 37 patients.
