Scope: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) provide a useful and minimally invasive source of biomarkers. Here to identify PBMC transcriptomic biomarkers predictive of metabolic impairment related to increased adiposity is aimed.
Methods And Results: The study analyzed the global PBMC transcriptome in metabolically healthy (normoglycemic) volunteers with overweight-obesity (OW-OB, n = 12), and in subjects with metabolically obese normal-weight (MONW, n = 5) phenotype, in comparison to normal-weight (NW, n = 12) controls.
: Dietary flavonoid intake is associated with a reduced risk of some cardiometabolic disorders, attributed in part to their claimed anti-inflammatory activity. Our aim was to investigate the potential association between specific urine flavonoid metabolites, liver enzymes, and inflammatory status in individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS). : In this cross-sectional study, clinical and dietary data from 267 participants, aged 55 to 75 years, participating in the PREDIMED Plus study (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea) were analyzed.

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels have been widely used for different biomedical applications due to their tunable physical characteristics and appropriate biological properties. In addition, GelMA could be modified with the addition of functional groups providing inherent antibacterial capabilities. Here, GelMA-based hydrogels were developed through the combination of a GelMA unmodified and modified polymer with quaternary ammonium groups (GelMAQ).

Nowadays, massive segmental bone defects represent a surgical challenge for trauma surgeons. Most of these injuries appear in the context of high-energy trauma, not only significantly affecting the bones, but also involving severe injuries of the adjacent soft tissues. For these reasons, their treatment requires complex reconstruction surgeries.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) includes a spectrum of liver alterations that can result in severe disease and even death. Consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) has been associated with obesity and related comorbidities. However, the link between UPF and NAFLD has not been sufficiently assessed.

In the current scenario of growing antibiotic resistance, understanding the interplay between resistance mechanisms and biological costs is crucial for designing therapeutic strategies. In this regard, intrinsic AmpC β-lactamase hyperproduction is probably the most important resistance mechanism of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, proven to entail important biological burdens that attenuate virulence mostly under peptidoglycan recycling alterations. Background & Aims: The quality of dietary carbohydrates rather than total carbohydrate intake may determine the accumulation of visceral fat; however, to date, few studies have examined the impact of diet on adiposity using specific imaging techniques. Thus, the aim of this prospective study was to investigate the association between concurrent changes in carbohydrate quality index (CQI) and objectively-quantified adiposity distribution over a year.
Methods: We analyzed a cohort of 1476 participants aged 55-75 years with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) from the PREDIMED-Plus randomized controlled trial.

Pazopanib was assessed prospectively in the GEIS-32 phase II study (NCT02066285) on advanced solitary fibrous tumour (SFT), resulting in a longer progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) compared with historical controls treated with chemotherapy. A retrospective analysis of peripheral inflammatory indexes in patients enrolled into GEIS-32 was performed to evaluate their prognostic and predictive value. Patients received pazopanib 800 mg/day as the first antiangiogenic line.

Background: Solitary fibrous tumours (SFT) are soft tissue sarcomas molecularly defined by the presence of the NAB2::STAT6 intrachromosomal fusion gene. Recently, a prospective phase II trial evaluating the role of the antiangiogenic tyrosine kinase inhibitor pazopanib in SFT has been conducted (NCT02066285).
Methods: Here, we analysed the mRNA and protein expression levels of the tumour suppressor and angiogenesis regulator p53 () in pre-treatment tumour samples from 22 patients with low aggressive (or typical) SFT and 28 patients with high aggressive (26 malignant and 2 dedifferentiated) SFT enrolled in the aforementioned pazopanib phase II trial.

Unhealthy diet is an important factor in the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Previous studies showed the benefits of a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) on Metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and cardiovascular diseases, which usually have a pathophysiological relationship with NAFLD. To assess the effect of adherence to a MedDiet on NAFLD in MetS patients after lifestyle intervention, this multicentre (Mallorca and Navarra, Spain) prospective randomized trial, with personalized nutritional intervention based on a customized MedDiet, coupled with physical activity promotion was performed to prevent, and reverse NAFLD among patients with MetS.

Background: A Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is recommended as a therapy for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) because there is no specific pharmacological treatment for this disease.
Objective: To assess the relationship between the adherence to the Mediterranean diet and the intrahepatic fat content (IFC), levels of oxidative stress, and inflammation biomarkers after a 6-month lifestyle intervention in NAFLD patients.
Methods: Patients diagnosed with NAFLD (n = 60 adults; 40-60 years old) living in the Balearic Islands, Spain, were classified into two groups, according to the adherence to the MedDiet after 6 months of lifestyle intervention.

Obesity and overweight are disorders with high impact on the morbidity and mortality of chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We aim to assess the effects of 2-year nutritional and lifestyle intervention on oxidative and inflammatory status in individuals of 55 years of age and over at high CVD risk. Participants (n = 100 individuals of 55 years of age and over living in the Balearic Islands, Spain) were randomized into control and intervention group.
