Objectives: Early detection of treatment failure is essential to improve the management of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). We evaluated the molecular bacterial load assay (MBLA) in comparison to standard diagnostic tests for monitoring therapy of patients affected by drug-resistant TB.
Methods: The performance of MBLA in tracking treatment response in a prospective cohort of patients with pulmonary MDR/RR- and pre-XDR/XDR-TB was compared with mycobacterial culture, mycobacterial DNA detection using GeneXpert (Xpert) and microscopy detection of sputum acid-fast-bacilli.

There is a controversy whether histamine H-receptor activation raises or lowers or does not affect contractility in the human heart. Therefore, we studied stimulation of H-receptors in isolated electrically stimulated (one beat per second) human atrial preparations (HAP). For comparison, we measured force of contraction in left atrial preparations (LA) from mice with overexpression of the histamine H-receptor in the heart (H-TG).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of pericardial T1 mapping as a potential supportive non-contrast cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) parameter in the diagnosis of acute pericarditis. Additionally, we investigated the relationship between T1 mapping values in acute pericarditis patients and their demographic data, cardiovascular risk factors, clinical parameters, cardiac biomarkers, and cardiac function.
Method: This retrospective study included CMR scans in 35 consecutive patients with acute pericarditis (26 males, 45.

Background: Malnutrition has a direct impact on both the toxicities of cancer therapy and the overall survival of oncological patients. However, its prevalence amongst vulnerable groups such as older patients (age ≥ 65 years) is often underestimated. Screening tools recognizing patients at risk are well established, yet they do not take into account that cancer therapy may lead to changes in dietary habits or that therapy's side effects may negatively influence nutritional status.

Mitochondrial oxygen tension (MitoPO2) is a promising novel non-invasive bedside marker of circulatory shock and is associated with organ failure. The measurement of mitoPO2 requires the topical application of 5-aminolevulinc acid (ALA) to induce sufficient concentrations of the fluorescent protein protoporphyrin-IX within (epi)dermal cells. Currently, its clinical potential in guiding resuscitation therapies is limited by the long induction time prior to obtaining a reliable measurement signal.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive impairment and memory deficit. Even with extensive research and studies, presently, there is no effective treatment for the management of AD. Besides, most of drugs used in the treatment of AD did not avert the AD neuropathology, and the disease still in a progressive status.

Purpose: Although total dietary protein intake has been associated with bladder cancer (BC) risk, the effect of the origin (plant or animal) and the substitutions remain to be understood. This study aimed to investigate the effect of total dietary protein, animal-based protein, plant-based protein, and their substitutions with each other on the risk of BC using a pooled analysis of 10 cohort studies.
Methods: The study was conducted within the "BLadder cancer Epidemiology and Nutritional Determinants" (BLEND) study, including 10 prospective cohort studies from several European countries, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Objectives: The efficacy of long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) in treating patients with chronic non-cancer pain (CnCP) is questionable, and the potential risks of adverse effects are well established. The aims were as follows: (1) compare characteristics in patients exposed to LTOT vs non-exposed. (2) Regarding opioid-exposed patients, describe characteristics of patients with risk factors for opioid use disorder or overdose in relation to opioid dosage.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is characterized by fibrosis of nucleus pulposus (NP) cells and accelerated surrounding extracellular matrix catabolism. Bioactive hydrogels have shown significant potential in regulating cellular functions and tissue homeostasis. In this work, a dynamic hydrogel (HA-NCSN/Cu) is designed via the reductive chelation of hyaluronic acid grafted with thiourea (HA-NCSN) and Cu.

Genetic variants in TMEM106B, coding for a transmembrane protein of unknown function, have been identified as critical genetic modulators in various neurodegenerative diseases with a strong effect in patients with frontotemporal degeneration. The luminal domain of TMEM106B can form amyloid-like fibrils upon proteolysis. Whether this luminal domain is generated under physiological conditions and which protease(s) are involved in shedding remain unclear.

Introduction: The EORTC-Lung Cancer Group initiated a Delphi consensus process to establish a consensual definition of resectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) for the use in clinical trials, including a systematic review, survey, and review of clinical cases. Here, the survey results are presented, aimed to identify areas of controversy.
Methods: A survey was distributed among the members of six international organizations related to lung cancer.
Background: Pulmonary artery stenosis, neoaortic dilatation, and neoaortic valve insufficiency are among the most frequent complications of the arterial switch operation for repair of dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA). It remains difficult to predict which patients will require great arterial reintervention.
Objective: We aimed to characterize hemodynamics within the great arteries using 4D flow MRI in patients with d-TGA after the arterial switch operation.

Given that perioperative normothermia represents a quality parameter in pediatric anesthesia, numerous studies have been conducted on temperature measurement, albeit with heterogeneous measurement intervals, ranging from 30 s to fifteen minutes. We aimed to determine the minimum time interval for reporting of intraoperative core body temperature across commonly used measurement intervals in children. Data were extracted from the records of 65 children who had participated in another clinical study and analyzed using a quasibinomial mixed linear model.

Medical image analysis has significantly benefited from advancements in deep learning, particularly in the application of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for generating realistic and diverse images that can augment training datasets. The common GAN-based approach is to generate entire image volumes, rather than the region of interest (ROI). Research on deep learning-based brain tumor classification using MRI has shown that it is easier to classify the tumor ROIs compared to the entire image volumes.

Purpose: Training machine learning models to segment tumors and other anomalies in medical images is an important step for developing diagnostic tools but generally requires manually annotated ground truth segmentations, which necessitates significant time and resources. We aim to develop a pipeline that can be trained using readily accessible binary image-level classification labels, to effectively segment regions of interest without requiring ground truth annotations.
Methods: This work proposes the use of a deep superpixel generation model and a deep superpixel clustering model trained simultaneously to output weakly supervised brain tumor segmentations.

Background: The high levels of antimicrobial consumption in hospitals contribute to the occurrence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria. Antimicrobial resistant bacteria and sub-lethal concentrations of antimicrobial metabolites can end up in hospital wastewater which can spread to the environment and to the community. However, information on the resistance profile of bacteria isolated from environments is not well studied.
