Purpose: Diverse radionuclide imaging techniques are available for the diagnosis, staging, and follow-up of phaeochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL). Beyond their ability to detect and localise the disease, these imaging approaches variably characterise these tumours at the cellular and molecular levels and can guide therapy. Here we present updated guidelines jointly approved by the EANM and SNMMI for assisting nuclear medicine practitioners in not only the selection and performance of currently available single-photon emission computed tomography and positron emission tomography procedures, but also the interpretation and reporting of the results.

Disorders of Arousal (DoA) are NREM parasomnias that have been typically regarded as self-limited childhood manifestations. It is now clear that DoA can persist in adults, often presenting with distinctive characteristics. So far, few studies have described the clinical course and characteristics of DoA in adulthood, therefore a large part of their semiology is ignored.

Cu and fluorescein labeled anti-miRNA peptide nucleic acids for the detection of miRNA expression in living cells.

Sci Rep

March 2019

Nuclear Medicine Unit, Oncology and Advanced Technologies Department, Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia, 42123, Reggio Emilia, Italy.

MiRNAs are single stranded RNAs of 18-22 nucleotides. They are promising diagnostic and prognostic markers for several pathologies including tumors, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases. In the present work the development and characterization of anti-miRNA radiolabeled probes based on peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) for potential non-invasive molecular imaging in vivo of giant cell arteritis are described.

Modulation of RAB7A Protein Expression Determines Resistance to Cisplatin through Late Endocytic Pathway Impairment and Extracellular Vesicular Secretion.

Cancers (Basel)

January 2019

Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies (DiSTeBA), University of Salento, Via Provinciale Lecce-Monteroni 165, 73100 Lecce, Italy.

Background: Cisplatin (CDDP) is widely used in treatment of cancer, yet patients often develop resistance with consequent therapeutical failure. In CDDP-resistant cells alterations of endocytosis and lysosomal functionality have been revealed, although their causes and contribution to therapy response are unclear.

Methods: We investigated the role of RAB7A, a key regulator of late endocytic trafficking, in CDDP-resistance by comparing resistant and sensitive cells using western blotting, confocal microscopy and real time PCR.

Innovative Target for Production of Technetium-99m by Biomedical Cyclotron.

Molecules

December 2018

Legnaro National Laboratories, Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (LNL-INFN), Viale dell'Università 2, 35020 Legnaro PD, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Technetium-99m (Tc) is the most widely used radionuclide in nuclear medicine for diagnostic imaging, typically extracted from molybdenum (Mo) generators.
  • Shortages of Tc have become an issue since 2008 due to reactor outages, leading to the exploration of alternative production methods using cyclotrons.
  • A novel method for preparing solid targets for Tc production was developed, demonstrating the ability to withstand high proton energy and intensities without damage, ensuring the reliability of the production process.

Lung cancer is the most frequent cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, but its molecular pathogenesis is poorly understood. The tumor suppressor candidate 3 (TUSC3) gene is located on chromosome 8p22 and is universally acknowledged as a cancer suppressor. However, our research has demonstrated that TUSC3 expression is significantly upregulated in non-small-cell lung cancer compared to benign controls.
