Objective: The objective of this study is to independently assess skeletal muscle index (SMI) and body mass index (BMI) as prognostic determinants for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and investigate their correlation with surgical outcomes.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective cohort study of 524 RCC patients diagnosed between August 2010 and July 2018 was conducted using data from the Zealand University Hospital Renal Cancer Database in Denmark. Patient information was extracted from electronic patient records and the National Cancer Registry and encompassed demographics, clinical factors, tumour characteristics and surgical details.

Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) and stroke share common risk factors, and symptoms of ED often precede the development of clinical cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, little is known about how ED is associated with cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in patients who had a stroke and if concomitant ED is a marker of more severe CVD.

Aims: We aimed to identify the prevalence of ED and CV risk factors in patients admitted with a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA).

Controversies in endobronchial ultrasound.

Endosc Ultrasound

December 2023

Department of Internal Medicine, Krankenhaus Märkisch Oderland GmbH, Strausberg/Wriezen, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is a safe and precise endoscopic method for diagnosing lymph node swelling and lung masses, improving lung cancer staging while minimizing the need for invasive surgeries.
  • Despite its advantages, several questions remain regarding informed consent differences, the potential for EBUS to replace standard bronchoscopy, and the best practices for performing the procedure.
  • The article discusses these ongoing challenges and seeks to clarify the best approaches for implementing EBUS in clinical settings.

  • This study evaluates the clinical features and outcomes of acute cannabis toxicity versus acute synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist toxicity in European emergency departments from 2013-2020.
  • Using data from the European Drug Emergencies Network Plus, researchers analyzed 2,657 cases of cannabis exposure and 503 cases of synthetic cannabinoid exposure to compare their effects.
  • The findings indicate that synthetic cannabinoid exposures are linked to more severe neuropsychiatric symptoms, while cannabis exposures are associated with cardiovascular issues.

Electronic address:

Background: Obesity rates have nearly tripled in the past 50 years, and by 2030 more than 1 billion individuals worldwide are projected to be obese. This creates a significant economic strain due to the associated non-communicable diseases. The root cause is an energy expenditure imbalance, owing to an interplay of lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors.

Introduction: Dopamine (D)-receptor antagonists (RAs) were the first antiemetics used in the prophylaxis of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV).

Areas Covered: Eight D-RAs, amisulpride, domperidone, droperidol, haloperidol, metoclopramide, metopimazine, olanzapine and prochlorperazine are reviewed focusing on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, antiemetic effect and side effects.

Expert Opinion: Since the introduction of D-RAs, antiemetics such as corticosteroids, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)-RAs and neurokinin (NK)-RAs have been developed.

Article Synopsis
  • Platelet transfusions are commonly administered in ICUs for patients with low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), but the specific practices and their outcomes are not well-documented.
  • In a study of 504 ICU patients across Europe and the U.S., 20.8% received platelet transfusions, primarily using pooled products, with varying practices in dosage and volume across different countries.
  • The research found that while platelet transfusions are frequent, they provide limited increases in platelet counts, indicating potential inconsistencies in their effectiveness and administration practices.

Purpose: To evaluate the five-year incidence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and associated risk markers in patients with type 1 diabetes in the national Danish DR-screening programme.

Methods: Based on national data, we included all 16 999 patients with type 1 diabetes in the Danish Registry of Diabetic Retinopathy, who attended the national screening programme in the period 2013-2018. According to the worse eye at first screening, DR was classified (levels 0-4) and linked with various national health registries to retrieve information on diabetes duration, systemic comorbidity, and medication.

Aims: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is the corner stone of modern rhythm control strategies in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is prevalent in more than 50% of patients undergoing AF ablation, and studies have indicated a greater recurrence rate after PVI in patients with SDB. Herein, we study the effect of catheter-based PVI on AF in a pig model for SDB.

The oncogene PIM2 is upregulated in several malignancies but has never been investigated in mycosis fungoides (MF), the most common type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). PIM2 is a well-known oncogene and is regulated by cell signaling pathways like the JAK/STAT- and NF-kB-pathway, key regulators in the pathogenesis of CTCL. The aim of this study was to examine the role of PIM2 in MF.

Background: Cardiac troponins are the preferred biomarkers for the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. Although sex-specific 99th percentile thresholds of troponins are recommended in international guidelines, the clinical effect of their use is poorly investigated. The DANSPOT Study (The Danish Study of Sex- and Population-Specific 99th percentile upper reference limits of Troponin) aims to evaluate the clinical effect of a prospective implementation of population- and sex-specific diagnostic thresholds of troponins into clinical practice.

Lenalidomide maintenance (LM) has shown benefit in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in clinical trials. LM is the recommended standard of care in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) after high-dose melphalan and autologous stem cell transplantation (HDM-ASCT). In Denmark, LM has been approved and publicly funded for all patients treated with HDM-ASCT since June 2019.

Purpose: Bowel obstruction accounts for around 50% of all emergency laparotomies. A multidisciplinary (MDT) standardized intraoperative model was applied (definitive, palliative, or damage control surgery) to identify patients suitable for a one-step, definitive surgical procedure favoring anastomosis over stoma, when undergoing surgery for bowel obstruction. The objective was to present mortality according to the strategy applied and to compare the rate of laparoscopic interventions and stoma creations to a historic cohort in surgery for bowel obstruction.
