Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on antimicrobial consumption (AMC) in the hospital sector in Croatia by analysing data reported to the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption Network (ESAC-Net) between 2016 and 2020.

Methods: AMC was measured as the number of DDDs/1000 inhabitants/day and as the number of DDDs/100 bed days. To assess trends, linear regression was performed.

Background: In the last decades, solid organ transplantation (SOT) has emerged as an important method in the management of chronic kidney, liver, heart, and lung failure. Antimicrobial use has led to a significant reduction of morbidity and mortality due to infectious complications among patients with SOT; however, it can lead to adverse events and drive the development of antimicrobial resistance; thus, antimicrobial stewardship is of extreme importance. Even though there are ongoing efforts of transplant societies to implement principles of antimicrobial stewardship in everyday practice in SOT, there is still a lack of guidelines in this patient population.

We present a European Union/European Economic Area-wide overview of the changes in consumption of antibacterials for systemic use (ATC J01) in the community between 2019 and 2020 as reported to the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption Network. Overall antibiotic consumption decreased by 18.3% between 2019 and 2020, the largest annual decrease in the network's two-decade history.

Background: Most of the antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) literature has focused on antimicrobial consumption for the treatment of infections, for the prophylaxis of surgical site infection and for the prevention of endocarditis. The role of AMS for medical antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) has not been adequately addressed.

Aims: To identify targets for AMS interventions for medical AP in adult patients.

Surveillance of antimicrobial consumption (AMC) is important to address inappropriate use. AMC data for countries in the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) and Eastern European and Central Asian countries were compared to provide future guidance. Analyses of 2014-2018 data from 30 EU/EEA countries of the European Surveillance of Antibiotic Consumption network (ESAC-Net) and 15 countries of the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO Europe) AMC Network were conducted using the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification and Defined Daily Dose (DDD) methodology.

We developed a next-generation SARS-CoV-2 sequencing platform and obtained the first SARS-CoV-2 sequences from patients in Croatia at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak in the spring of 2020. Integrating the sequencing and the epidemiological data, we show that patients were infected with different SARS-CoV-2 variants belonging to different clades (mostly G and GH). This result confirms that there was widespread virus transmission early in 2020.

Centre de Référence Épilepsies Rares, Necker Enfants MaladesUniversity Hospital, Department of Pediatric Neurology, Member of EPICARE European Reference Network Epicare, Institut Imagine, U1163, Université de Paris, Paris, France.

We explored the impact of coronavirus virus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on patients with Dravet syndrome (DS) and their family. With European patient advocacy groups (PAGs), we developed an online survey in 10 languages to question health status, behavior, personal protection, and health services before and after lockdown. Approximately 538 European PAG members received electronic invitations.

Introduction:  In 33 consecutive patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) undergoing awake deep brain stimulation (DBS) without microelectrode recording (MER), we assessed and validated the precision and accuracy of direct targeting of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) using preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and stereotactic computed tomography (CT) image fusion combined with immediate postoperative stereotactic CT and postoperative MRI, and we report on the side effects and clinical results up to 6 months' follow-up.

Materials And Methods:  Preoperative nonstereotactic MRI and stereotactic CT images were merged and used for planning the trajectory and final lead position. Immediate postoperative stereotactic CT and postoperative nonstereotactic MRI provided the validation of the final electrode position.

Background: Radical dissection of lymph nodes, accompanying gastric cancer resection, can lead to collateral damage to the pancreas and development of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF).

Methods: We searched the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science up to April 21, 2020, to identify studies documenting the value of abdominal drain amylase level (d-AMY) on postoperative day 1 (POD1) as a predictor of POPF after gastric surgery. The quality of selected studies was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool.

Introduction Advanced, Monte Carlo (MC) based dose calculation algorithms, determine absorbed dose as dose to medium-in-medium (Dm,m) or dose to water-in-medium (Dw,m). Some earlier studies identified the differences in the absorbed doses related to the calculation mode, especially in the bone density equivalent (BDE) media. Since the calculation algorithms built in the treatment planning systems (TPS) should be dosimetrically verified before their use, we analyzed dose differences between two calculation modes for the Elekta Monaco TPS.

One of the core elements of antibiotic stewardship is surveillance and monitoring of quantity of antibiotic use. This requires tools for measuring the quantity of antibiotic use. However, these metrics have not been standardized, and different metrics are used across different countries, regions and individual healthcare settings.
