Aim: To analyse the curricula of 16 medical schools in 6 countries in Southeast Europe in order to establish a prevailing standard curriculum against which a prospective curriculum reform could formulate its objectives.
Methods: Curricular information was gathered from a questionnaire sent via e-mail to the respective medical schools. The data collected ranged from the numbers of enrolled students to a breakdown of courses with distribution of instruction hours for certain teaching formats.

The use of second-generation anticoagulants termed "superwarfarins" as rodenticides, although widespread, is poorly controlled. Products containing superwarfarin have been marketed in over-the-counter rodenticides and can be easily purchased. Poor control potentiates the risk of accidental or intentional poisoning, but clinicians may underestimate the incidence of superwarfarin toxicity.

Penetrating cardiac trauma is a life-threatening condition and presents a therapeutic challenge for the surgeon. Additional multiple organ-system injuries, as are common in the setting of war, further complicate the management of such patients. We present the case of a 9-year-old girl who sustained multiple injuries from an unexploded artillery shell, resulting in a retained intracardiac shrapnel.

In this study, we have analysed the distribution of HLA class II alleles and the extended haplotype HLA-Cw-B-DRB1-DQA1-DQB1 in Croatian patients with type I and type II psoriasis by hybridization with specific oligonucleotide probes. Type I psoriasis showed a significant association with the DRB1*0701 [P < 0.00001; relative risk (RR) = 5.

A new key-string segmentation algorithm for identification of alpha satellite DNAs and higher-order repeat (HOR) units was introduced and exemplified. Starting with an initial key string, we determine the dominant key string and HOR. Our key-string algorithm was used to scan the recent GenBank data for human alpha satellite DNA sequence AC017075.

There is an emerging awareness of the possibility of conflicts of interest in the practice of medicine in Croatia. The paper examines areas within the medical profession where conflicts of interest can and have occurred, probably not only in Croatia. Particularly addressed are situations when a doctor may have dual obligations and how independent ethics committees can help in decreasing the influence of a conflict of interest.

Primary intracardiac neoplasms are most commonly histologically benign with only 30% exhibiting signs of malignancy. Metastatic tumors of the heart are 30 times more common than primary cardiac tumors. Patients with intracardiac masses may present with dyspnea on exertion, thromboembolic events, pericarditis, arrhythmias, or congestive heart failure.

The aim of this study was to assess the clinical value of bone marrow immunoscintigraphy using the (99m)Tc labelled anti-NCA-95 antigranulocyte antibodies (AGAb) and of AGAb bone marrow uptake ratio (UR) in the initial diagnostic work-up of diseases with depression of the bone marrow. Twenty-four whole-body bone marrow scans were performed in 23 patients (11 women, 12 men; median age 46 years, range 17-74 years) 5 h after i.v.

Here, we report on a case of coronary artery fistula that developed following the repair of a double-outlet right ventricle (DORV) with infundibular pulmonary stenosis in a patient who has a single coronary artery. The major concern in this case was that of reduction of coronary blood flow from the patient's only coronary artery to the myocardium distal to the fistula.

From December 1993 to March 1999 we treated 18 elderly patients aged 66-87 years, suffering from urban hypothermia: 11 women and 7 men. Ten patients suffered from moderate hypothermia (rectal temperature 32-35 degrees C), and eight from severe hypothermia (rectal temperature < 32 degrees C). Regarding consciousness, in the group suffering from moderate hypothermia, 3 were somnolent and 6 in various degrees of comatose states.

In order to study left ventricular hypertrophy patterns in obese hypertensives, we examined 132 patients with essential hypertension by 2D, M-mode and Doppler echocardiography. The patients were classified in four comparable groups, corresponding to the values of Quetelet's body mass index (BMI) and grades of obesity. More obese hypertensives had on average larger left ventricles with thicker walls and larger left atria than less obese, or lean ones.

The HLA class II alleles (DRB1, DRB3, DRB5, DQA1, and DQB1) and haplotypic associations were studied in the population of the island of Krk using the PCR-SSOP method and the 12th International Histocompatibility Workshop primers and probes. Allele and haplotypic frequencies were compared with the general Croatian population. Significant differences were observed between the population of the island of Krk and Croatians for: a) three broad specificities at DRB1 locus (DRB1*01, *15, and *07), b) one allele at DRB3 locus (DRB3*0301), c) one allele at DQA1 locus (DQA1*0201), d) one allele at DQB1 locus (DQB1*0303).

Vitamin E as an antioxidant vitamin reduces the susceptibility of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol to oxidation and may have antiatherosclerotic effects. We tested the hypothesis that six months of 400 mg vitamin E supplementation favourably affects early functional changes in atherosclerotic process in subjects with hypercholesterolemia. The diameter of the brachial artery at rest, after reactive hyperemia (representing endothelium -dependent vasodilatation) and after sublingual glyceryl -trinitrate (representing endothelium - independent vasodilatation), were determined by ultrasonographic method (B mode) before and after the intervention period.

Relationship between the serum (S CEA) and the tissue (T CEA) carcinoembryonic antigen concentrations with regard to the degree of dysplasia in colorectal adenomas was investigated. Our study included 56 single or multiple colorectal adenomas in 46 patients. The measurements of T CEA concentrations were performed using the quantitative CEA-EIA method (Abbott) modified for wet tissue, obtained from heads of the adenomas.

The author tried to present social circumstances in the postwar period in Croatia, a period similar to other situations occurring after a war. Family doctors, and especially psychiatrists, exerted themselves to be present in these situations, and also they were alert to the sufferings of human beings as a consequence of the war. New conditions, new relations, as well as the previous war actions in which the patients had participated, made psychopathologic morbidity rather different from that appearing during the war and before the war.
