The risk of venous thromboembolism following major orthopaedic procedures, such as joint arthroplasty and hip fracture surgery, are well recognised and represent one of the major challenges in orthopaedic practice, having in mind the increasing number of arthroplasties of the hip and knee done worldwide per year and their successful outcome. This potentially fatal complication remains a challenge in orthopaedic practice. The percentage of patients in whom antithrombotic prophylaxis has not been administrated or has been inadequate may reach 50%.

Objective: We aimed to determine the safety and feasibility of general anaesthesia (GA) compared with local anaesthesia + Monitored Anaesthesia Care (LA+MAC) for One-Day Thyroid Surgery (ODTS); to assess patient and operator satisfaction with either of the anesthetic approaches.
Material And Methods: We reviewed prospectively 130 patients who underwent ODTS from 2008 to 2011. 64 patients were operated on under GA and 62 - under LA+MAC.

Bisphosphonates are the most widely prescribed treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis, secondary osteoporosis, and male osteoporosis. Notwithstanding their high effectiveness and favorable safety profile, the adherence to bisphosphonate treatment remains low. Different treatment strategies aim to improve the clinical effectiveness of bisphosphonate therapy.

Background: Pelvic organs morbidity after irradiation of cancer patients remains a major problem although new technologies have been developed and implemented. A relatively simple and suitable method for routine clinical practice is needed for preliminary assessment of normal tissue intrinsic radiosensitivity. The micronucleus test (MNT) determines the frequency of the radiation induced micronuclei (MN) in peripheral blood lymphocytes, which could serve as an indicator of intrinsic cell radiosensitivity.

The treatment of lymphoproliferative diseases has changed dramatically during the last decades. The improved therapeutic results for this disease group are included among the most important achievements of modern oncohaematology. They are due to better disease staging, use of new markers for risk assessment, patient stratification in separate risk groups, implementation of highly effective chemotherapy (CHT), progress of targeted therapies using monoclonal antibodies, proteasome inhibitors, modern radiation therapy (RT) and supportive care.

Methods And Materials: Between 1982 and 2007, 170 patients with HD with median age of 12 years (range 3-40), (68 females, 102 males), were included in this retrospective study. The clinical stage (CS) distribution was CS I in 1 patient (0.

Purpose: To examine the use of whole abdominal irradiation (WAI) open field technique in patients with stage III endometrial cancer (EC).
Methods: Between 1993 and 2007, 26 patients (age 39-70 years, median 58) with stage III EC (IIIA 15, IIIB 2, IIIC 8) were treated with WAI after primary surgery. Five (21)) patients had grade 1 disease, 18 (67%) grade 2 and 3 (12%) grade 3.

We reported a case of large right atrial thrombus which migrated from the inferior vena cava after acute left ventricular dysfunction due to 5-Fluorouracil cardiotoxicity. The patient had recurrent episodes of chest pain and dyspnea suggestive of pulmonary thromboembolism and several days later control echocardiography showed that the right atrial thrombus had disappeared. The patient was discharged with oral anticoagulant therapy with no further clinical sequelae during an 11 month period but died because of progression of metastatic processes.

The subcutaneous bioavailability of a new recombinant erythropoietin preparation (epoetin zeta, CAS 604802-70-2) and the pharmacokinetic properties of this drug compared to a reference product (epoetin alfa, CAS 113427-24-0) were analyzed after a single intravenous bolus injection or subcutaneous injection of 10,000 IU in a three-period crossover design in 48 healthy volunteers. Peripheral venous blood samples were obtained pre-dose, and 0:05, 0:20, 0:40, 1:00, 1:20, 1:40, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, 6:00, 8:00, 12:00, 24:00, 36:00, 48:00, and 72:00 h post dosing. Samples from 48 volunteers were analyzed by means of a specific immunoassay (ELISA).

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of breast conserving surgery (BCS), followed by postoperative radiation treatment (RT), chemotherapy and/or hormonotherapy in patients with early invasive lobular breast cancer (ILC).
Patients And Methods: 48 patients with TNM stages I and II ILC of the breast were treated conservatively by BCS (quadrantectomy) and axillary dissection to levels I and II, followed by RT and adjuvant chemotherapy or hormonal treatment. In patients with pN0 the remaining breast with scar and chest were treated by RT, with a total radiation dose (TRD) of 50 Gy.

During the last 20 years we observed 3 cases with the rare condition of desmoid fibromatosis in childhood. This benign tumor with infiltrating potential has therapeutic difficulties for the achievement of a stable local tumor control (LTC). In this paper we present our experience with the therapeutic manipulations applied to our patients and go through the relevant literature on desmoids tumors.

Until now only Japanese authors have reported 4 cases of pancreatic neoplasm associated with ulcerative colitis (UC). We report on a case of a 44-year-old woman who was operated on for complicated UC and an exocrine-endocrine neoplasm of the pancreas, where the endocrine component was presented by pancreatic polypeptide (PP)-producing cells. By means of molecular genetics methods we found microsatellite instability (MSI) in the markers D18S35, FGA and p53 in the colonic lining, and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in the p53 marker in the pancreatic tumor.

Aseptic loosening due to bone remodeling and osteolysis is the main reason for revision hip arthroplasty. At present, there is no established prophylaxis for this complication. On the other hand, it has been demonstrated that bisphosphonates prevent bone loss around total hip arthroplasties (THA).

Background: Despite of excellent long-term results, there is a need for the selection of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer who experience an unfavorable outcome.
Patients And Methods: Between 1980 and 1997, 406 patients underwent thyroidectomy, elective neck dissection if necessary, and radioiodine treatment and/or external beam radiotherapy according to different histologies and TNM stages. Long-term results were analyzed under the comparison of 5 classification systems (TNM, EORTC, AMES, MACIS, and NTCTCSR) to make a selection of patients with high risk and therefore to plead for aggressive treatment.

Turner syndrome is thought to result from the haploinsufficiency of genes on the sex chromosomes, but these genes have not been identified yet. We describe two males with deleted ring Y chromosomes, one (TS) with full Turner syndrome and one (DM) without. TS has short stature, skeletal anomalies, lymphogenic obstruction, cardiovascular abnormalities, and miscellaneous features including pigmented naevi, antimongoloid slanting of the palpebral fissures, and widely spaced nipples.
